UN calls for a “credible” investigation into mass graves in Gaza

On Monday, the United Nations described reports of the discovery of a mass grave in the Gaza Strip as “deeply disturbing” and called for a “credible” investigation into the grave sites.

On Monday, the Civil Defense Service in the Gaza Strip announced in a statement that the number of bodies discovered had risen to 283, in a mass grave discovered on Saturday in Nasser Hospital in the city of Khan Yunis, south of the Strip, from which the Israeli army withdrew after widespread violations, according to Palestinian reports.

In response to a question about the discovery of at least 283 bodies, a spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, said in a press conference: “We call for a full investigation into all cemetery sites in a credible and independent manner.”

Dujarric said a ceasefire was needed "to see an end to this conflict" in the Gaza Strip.

The UN official reiterated the need to enable humanitarian workers to have greater access to Gaza, protect hospitals, and release hostages.

He pointed out that reports of the discovery of a mass grave in the Gaza Strip are "extremely disturbing."
