Words fail. "Sami" was not the first, nor will he be the last, on the "Sole Survivor" list; he joined it after a horrific massacre targeted his family's home in Deir al-Balah two days ago, costing him his father "Omar," his mother "Asmaa," and his sister "Habiba," who was two years older than him. With dazed, staring eyes and broken limbs wrapped in white, the orphaned child appeared carried in the arms of a relative, unaware of what had befallen his family, whose bodies are still trapped under the rubble of a home they sought shelter in, hoping for shade to protect them from the summer heat, in an area they thought was far from the daily targeting and crimes led by extremists whose hearts have hardened, like stones or even harder; they kill, burn, starve, dehydrate, besiege, uproot trees, demolish stones, and inflict severe torment on the unarmed without any conscience, sense of responsibility, or human feelings. Yesterday, ten-year-old Ayman joined that list, the sole survivor of the Nasman family: his father Adham, his mother Marwa, and his brothers Yahya and Ibrahim, who perished in a raid on the family home in central Gaza. In the approximation of pain and the agony of loss, it seems that "all who died miraculously escaped life," as our late poet Mahmoud Darwish said, while the survivors endure a pain that has settled in their hearts and will not leave them as long as they live.
