Israeli occupation warships opened machine gun fire at Palestinian fishermen's boats operating off the coast of Khan Yunis city in the southern Gaza Strip early Saturday morning. Field sources reported that the attack was intense and indiscriminate, causing panic among the fishermen who were practicing their profession in their designated areas.
The machine gun shelling coincided with the occupation forces firing flare bombs into the sky of the maritime area, while military cruisers chased Palestinian fishing boats to prevent them from continuing their work. Local sources confirmed that the fishermen were forced to withdraw completely towards the coast for fear of being injured or having their equipment and nets, which constitute their sole source of livelihood, destroyed.
These aggressions come in the context of continuous tightening by the occupation against the fishing sector in Gaza, where fishermen are subjected to daily pursuits aimed at harming the local economy and depriving thousands of families of their livelihoods, amidst the ongoing siege imposed on the Strip and strict restrictions on maritime movement.
The intense fire and the pursuit by occupation cruisers forced the fishermen to withdraw towards the shore despite being in the allowed fishing area.
