The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, confirmed during his remarks alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in occupied Jerusalem on Monday that a diplomatic solution for Gaza may not be possible, statements made as the genocide war waged by Israel against the enclave continues with full American support.
Rubio blamed Hamas for the failure to reach an agreement, despite Israel recently bombing Hamas officials in Qatar, the country mediating ceasefire talks. Hamas officials stated that the airstrikes targeted them while they were meeting to discuss the latest U.S. ceasefire proposal.
Israeli media also reported that Netanyahu was the obstacle to reaching an agreement, having thwarted a potential ceasefire deal at least seven times.
Rubio said, "We must remember who we are dealing with here, and they are a group of people who have dedicated their lives to violence and barbarism." When faced with this harsh reality, no matter how much we wish for a peaceful and diplomatic solution to end this situation, and while we will continue to explore and dedicate ourselves to it, we must also be prepared for the possibility that it may not happen.
Rubio did not criticize the Israeli bombing of Qatar during the ceasefire negotiations. When asked about the strikes, Rubio said, "We are focused on what is happening now, what will happen later, and what role Qatar can play in reaching an outcome here that not only ends this hostility, does not only lead to the release of all living and dead hostages, and does not only disarm and eliminate Hamas, but also leads to a better future for the people of Gaza, which is not possible as long as Hamas exists."
The day before, Rubio visited the Western Wall in the Old City of occupied East Jerusalem. Netanyahu told reporters at the wall, "I think his visit here is a testament to the strength and resilience of the Israeli-American alliance; it is as strong and solid as the stones of the Western Wall that he just touched. This alliance in the era of President Trump and Secretary of State Rubio and their entire team is stronger than ever."
