The Palestinian prisoner doctor, Hussam Abu Safiya (52 years old), suffers from severe medical neglect, having lost more than 30 kilograms of his weight. He is also suffering from high blood pressure and the worsening of previous injuries from shrapnel. This suffering comes in the context of the medical neglect violations faced by him and thousands of prisoners from the Gaza Strip in the occupation's prisons.
Lawyer Ghida Qassem, representing Dr. Abu Safiya, shared horrifying details about his health condition. The doctor, who continued his humanitarian work until the moment of his arrest, is now facing acute medical neglect, having been subjected to brutal beating that resulted in the breaking of four ribs and heart disturbances. His suffering has worsened with the recent outbreak of scabies in Ofer prison, from which he has also contracted the disease.
Dr. Abu Safiya is being held under an order that classifies him as an 'illegal combatant,' a legal amendment used by the occupation specifically against Gaza prisoners. According to his lawyer, the detention order against Abu Safiya is set to expire on September 12 of this year, leaving his fate uncertain between the possibility of extending his detention or releasing him.
