All members of the Dutch government from the "New Social Contract" party announced their resignation from the caretaker government, just one day after the resignation of Foreign Minister Kaspar Veldkamp. These resignations came as a result of the government's failure to impose sanctions on the Israeli occupation due to its ongoing aggression against the Gaza Strip since October 2023.
The "NOS" television channel reported that the resigning ministers, including the acting Deputy Prime Minister and the acting Ministers of Interior and Education, as well as the acting Minister of Health, made this decision in solidarity with the position of the resigning minister. The party confirmed that the lack of consensus within the government regarding the imposition of additional sanctions against the Israeli occupation was a major driving force behind the resignation.
In previous statements, Veldkamp indicated that the government does not support taking additional measures against the Israeli occupation due to its war on Gaza and its settlement plans in the occupied West Bank, which led to his feeling of resistance within the cabinet.
The People's Party for Freedom and Democracy responded to the resignations, expressing surprise at the withdrawal of the "New Social Contract" party at a time when negotiations were ongoing. The party considered this action to leave the government in a state of chaos and weaken its ability to take effective measures against Netanyahu's government.
The Dutch government collapsed in early July, and it is expected that the caretaker government will remain until a coalition government is formed after the elections scheduled for next October, which may take months.
These resignations reflect the rising tension within European political circles regarding the policies of the Israeli occupation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, and demonstrate the increasing impact of mass protests in Europe against the aggression on Gaza.
In a related context, the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) praised Minister Veldkamp's position and his resignation along with several ministers, considering that this stance embodies humanitarian values and reflects an awareness of the importance of taking action to stop the aggression.
The movement added that the United Nations' announcement of famine in the Gaza Strip imposes on those with a conscience the obligation to make every effort to boycott the occupation and punish it, and to pressure it to stop the ongoing crime of genocide and starvation.
The principled stance of the resigning Dutch ministers embodies humanitarian values.
