Israeli authorities deported the last two activists detained by the Israeli occupation authorities after the interception of the "Handala" ship on Thursday. They are Christian Daniel Smalls from the United States and Hatem Al-Aouini from Tunisia, according to the Adalah Center for Human Rights in Palestine.
The two activists left via a crossing into Jordan, where the Tunisian embassy received Al-Aouini. The center explained that the two activists spent "five days in illegal detention and an open-ended hunger strike," stressing that "there are no activists remaining in the hands of the Israeli authorities."
This completes the deportation of all activists who participated in the "Hanthala" ship voyage, which departed from Italy on July 21, 2025, as part of the "Freedom Flotilla" to break the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip, carrying medical and food aid.
The Israeli military intercepted the ship at sea on July 26, "contrary to international humanitarian law," and took it to the port of Ashdod, where the activists were "illegally detained," according to Adalah's statement.
The center noted that its legal team monitored the arrests from the outset, provided legal representation to the activists, and visited those remaining in prison "daily," amid what it described as "repeated attempts by Israeli authorities to impose arbitrary conditions for deportation and to impose restrictions on the prison population."
Adalah emphasized that the activists' initiative is based on "the principles of justice, international law, and human rights," and that Israel's interception of the Hanthala ship in international waters "constitutes a flagrant violation of these principles and contributes to the continuation of the illegal blockade on Gaza," which it described as "the deliberate starvation of Palestinians amidst the ongoing genocide that has been going on for 22 months."
