The Emir of Qatar and the US President discuss ceasefire efforts in Gaza

On Monday evening, Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani discussed with US President Joe Biden the efforts of the two countries to reach an immediate and permanent ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

This came during a phone call that the Emir of Qatar received from the US President, according to a statement by the Emiri Diwan, in light of the ongoing Qatari-Egyptian-American mediation for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The statement said that the two sides discussed "developments in the situation in the Gaza Strip and the occupied Palestinian territories, and the efforts of the two countries to reach an immediate and permanent ceasefire agreement in Gaza."

During the call, they "discussed strategic relations between the two countries and ways to support and enhance them, in addition to discussing regional and international developments."

Earlier Monday, Biden also discussed by telephone with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi the latest developments in the ongoing negotiations to reach a calm in the Gaza Strip.

For months, Egypt, Qatar, and the United States have been leading indirect negotiations between Israel and the Hamas movement, but they did not result in the crystallization of an agreement due to Israel’s rejection of Hamas’s demand to end the war, withdraw its forces from the Gaza Strip, and return the displaced Palestinians to the northern Gaza Strip.
