The "Return Key" pin provokes anger in Tel Aviv.. and the occupation's Foreign Ministry accuses Abbas of seeking a "new tsunami."

A key-shaped pin worn by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on his jacket during his speech before the United Nations General Assembly has provoked the ire of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, which launched a sharp attack, considering the symbol to have the goal of 'erasing Israel' and seeking to create a 'new flood' to destroy the Jewish state.

This diplomatic spat brings to the forefront the deep conflict between the Palestinian and Israeli narratives, where the 'key' represents a fundamental symbol in Palestinian memory, while Tel Aviv sees it as an existential threat.

President Abbas appeared wearing the key pin during his speech delivered via video on September 22, on the sidelines of the United Nations meetings. The key is a traditional and deeply significant Palestinian symbol, referring to the mass displacement of Palestinians from their homes and lands in 1948, known as the 'Nakba', and embodies the Palestinian people's insistence on the right of return to those lands.

Although Abbas's speech called for an end to the conflict and the establishment of lasting peace based on good neighborly relations between two states, the Israeli occupation's response focused entirely on the symbolic significance of the pin.

In a post on its official account on the 'X' platform, the Israeli Foreign Ministry described the key symbol as 'unequivocal in its goal of erasing Israel from the face of the earth.' It added that 'Abbas's key represents the old plan of the Palestine Liberation Organization: two states for one Palestinian people and the destruction of the Jewish state.'

The ministry went further, accusing Abbas of 'wanting to create his own flood', referring to the flood of Al-Aqsa, by returning millions of descendants of Palestinian refugees to what it considers 'Israeli' lands, with the aim of 'demographically destroying the Jewish state.'

In its response, the Israeli Foreign Ministry presented a counter-narrative, pointing out that during the 'War of Independence' in 1948, the number of Jews who were displaced from Arab countries was greater than the number of Palestinians who left their homes.

Trump's plan for Gaza amid Netanyahu's maneuvers and doubts about implementation

The 21-point plan by U.S. President Donald Trump to resolve the Gaza crisis and the Palestinian issue is generating mixed reactions among political and strategic affairs experts.

While Arab and Muslim leaders express cautious optimism, analysts warn against repeating previous scenarios where Trump reversed his positions under the influence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court.

The U.S. president met with leaders of Arab and Islamic countries at the United Nations to present his plan regarding Gaza, describing the meeting as very important and emphasizing his desire to end the war and recover hostages.

Although the broad outlines of the U.S. proposal did not include detailed specifics, the American news site Politico confirmed that Trump promised Arab leaders not to allow Israel to annex the West Bank.

In this context, the declared U.S. intent aligns with a cautiously optimistic Arab stance, as the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, pointed out that the situation in Gaza is extremely dire, adding, "We are here to do everything we can to end the war and bring back the captives."

In the same vein, the Emir of Qatar addressed the U.S. president, affirming, "We rely on President Trump's leadership to put an end to the war in Gaza."

These positions are reflected in the joint statement issued by the participating countries, which emphasized the necessity of stopping the war and releasing prisoners as a first step towards a just and lasting peace, indicating a common ground for cooperation between the U.S. administration and Arab and Islamic countries on this sensitive issue.

Strategic expert in the Republican Party, Jean Card, confirmed that the coming days will reveal more details about the plan, noting that Trump added a new element by pledging not to allow Israel to annex the West Bank.

However, Card pointed out that Trump is known for frequently changing his opinions, but she clarified that what can be inferred is understanding how he views matters concerning Gaza and the future solution.

In another assessment of Trump's ambitions, Card explained that the U.S. president seeks to achieve a historic accomplishment that surpasses the Abraham Accords, asserting that he is a dreamer in different ways and believes in peace despite his image as a strong person.

She noted that Trump is proud of the Abraham Accords and wants to add a new legacy, but she considered the vision impossible despite having no doubt about his dedication.

Based on this analysis, Card predicted that Trump's goal for the upcoming meeting with Netanyahu is to persuade him to agree to the plan, as he wants to emerge as the hero who achieved peace.

However, she anticipated that Netanyahu would not yield, which could cause frustration for Trump, who does not back down or surrender.

Conversely, researcher and political analyst Dr. Osama Abu Rish pointed out that any statement issued by the U.S. president is a cause for optimism, but he questioned whether this optimism would translate into practical action.

In this context, Abu Rish reminded of what happened last July when the level of optimism reached the belief that the Israeli aggression had come to an end, but the result was Trump reversing his positions and placing the responsibility back on Hamas.

Nevertheless, Abu Rish confirmed that the leaked items from Trump's plan appear mostly positive, especially regarding stopping the aggression, reconstruction, humanitarian aid, and the role of Arab Islamic forces and the Palestinian Authority.

He also praised the conditions set by Arab and Muslim leaders to prevent annexation, displacement, and new settlement activities.

However, this positive assessment does not hide some reservations, as Abu Rish warned of the contradictory messages coming from the U.S. administration, pointing to past experiences with Trump, who presents one position and its opposite.

He added that all these matters are subject to Trump's mood and Netanyahu's ability to maneuver and manipulate.

In analyzing the political context in which the U.S. administration operates, Abu Rish pointed to a series of pressures facing Trump, ranging from his obsession with the Nobel Peace Prize to the pressure from the "MAGA" movement that demands he puts America first instead of Israel.

On the international front, he highlighted the growing diplomatic isolation with European countries recognizing the Palestinian state, leaving America isolated from three-quarters of the international community.

Moreover, Abu Rish added that Trump has given Netanyahu all possible support in terms of weapons and diplomatic backing without achieving a decisive victory, which has translated Israeli isolation into American isolation.

Regarding the Israeli side of the equation, Israeli affairs expert Dr. Mohannad Mustafa clarified that Netanyahu's acceptance of the plan is linked to the extent of serious American pressure on him.

Spain sends a warship to protect the "Fleet of Resilience" heading to Gaza.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that his country will send a warship tomorrow, Thursday, from the port of Cartagena in the southeast of the country to protect the "Global Resilience Fleet" aimed at breaking the Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip.

Sánchez stated in a press statement after participating in a session of the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday: "A maritime operations ship equipped with all necessary resources will depart tomorrow from Cartagena to assist the fleet (Global Resilience) and carry out a rescue operation if needed."

Spanish media confirmed that the government's decision came after a similar move by Italy, noting that the Ministry of Defense clarified that the ship will operate in international waters.

The "Global Resilience Fleet," consisting of more than 50 boats heading towards Gaza with the aim of opening a humanitarian corridor and breaking the Israeli blockade, was subjected to drone attacks last night believed to have been carried out by Israel, resulting in several explosions and communication disruptions, with no human casualties reported.

Earlier, UN Human Rights Commission spokesperson Thameen Al-Khaitan condemned the drone attack on the fleet, while opposition groups in Greece and France called for the protection of the "Global Resilience Fleet."

Rome also condemned the attack on the fleet in Greek waters and announced that the multi-role frigate "Vesuvio" of the Italian Navy, stationed north of the island of Crete, has moved towards the area to assist its citizens.

For its part, the "Global Resilience Fleet" announced earlier on Wednesday that 12 explosions occurred on 9 of its ships due to being targeted by drones.

The fleet did not address the timing of these attacks or the responsible party, while Israel remains silent, having repeatedly threatened to prevent the fleet from reaching Gaza.

Israel, the occupying power in Palestine, has previously engaged in piracy against earlier ships that sailed individually towards Gaza, seizing them and deporting the activists on board.

For days, dozens of ships have been sailing as part of the "Global Resilience Fleet" towards the Gaza Strip, carrying humanitarian aid, particularly medical supplies.

This is the first time that this number of ships has collectively sailed towards the Gaza Strip, where about 2.4 million Palestinians live, and which has been under Israeli blockade for 18 years.

With U.S. support, Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023, resulting in 65,419 deaths and 167,160 injuries, most of whom are children and women, and a famine that has claimed the lives of 442 Palestinians, including 147 children.

Colombia calls for the formation of a global army to liberate Palestine and arrest war criminals.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro called for the formation of a global force aimed at liberating Palestine, stating that condemnation and denunciation are not enough to confront the crimes committed by Israel in Palestine.

In statements to Al Jazeera Mubasher today, Wednesday, he added that many countries have expressed their willingness to participate in forming a military force to liberate Palestine, and that statements of condemnation are no longer sufficient.

He emphasized the necessity of demonstrating strength in the face of Israel and arresting those accused of committing genocide in Gaza and bringing them to the International Criminal Court, saying that the formation of a global army to save Palestine would be linked to the will of the countries.

Petro affirmed that "a human majority worldwide is calling for an end to the Israeli genocide war on Gaza," and that "the voting system in the Security Council must be changed, as no single country can impose its opinion on the world."

He stated that he expressed to the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, solidarity with his country and condemned the Israeli bombardment that targeted it earlier this month.

The dream of Palestine is close to realization, as he believes that the dream of the late President Yasser Arafat to establish a Palestinian state is nearing fulfillment, and that saving the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip is a rescue for all of humanity.

Petro expressed his rejection of Israeli accusations of anti-Semitism, adding, "We support the children of Gaza who are being bombed by Israel, because we have suffered from the horrors of violence in our country, so we understand the dangers of war and the importance of promoting peace."

He accused global companies of supporting the war on Gaza and funding campaigns in favor of Israel, pointing out that some European positions on the war in Gaza are characterized by hypocrisy.

In August 2018, Colombia recognized Palestine as a free, independent, and sovereign state.

Former Shin Bet Chief: Recognizing the State of Palestine Could Contribute to Ending the War

The British newspaper "The Times" published a report stating that the former head of the Israeli internal intelligence service considered Britain's recognition of the Palestinian state as potentially contributing to ending the war in Gaza.

Amir Ayalon said that this step could help find a diplomatic solution to the "conflict" between "Israel" and Hamas by assisting in isolating both sides.

The decision by Keir Starmer to recognize a Palestinian state, alongside France and other countries, has angered "Israel," with Benjamin Netanyahu's government stating that this move rewards Hamas for its attack on October 7, 2023. The United States, still Israel's closest supporter, also rejected it, describing it as a "performative gesture."

However, Ayalon stated that he disagrees with this assessment, telling The Times: "They said it is a great gift to Hamas. It is not a great gift to Hamas. It is a nightmare for Hamas. It is a collapse of their ideology; they will disappear as a major political player."

Ayalon argues that the groups that will not benefit from the recognition are extremist groups like Hamas, which governs Gaza, and the Israeli messianic right, which pushes for the formal annexation of the West Bank and the rebuilding of Jewish settlements in Gaza.

He said: "It is a very clear message to these two extremist and violent groups that have led the region in some way over the past thirty years," adding: "Yes, it will also isolate our government. But our government does not represent Israelis today."

More than 70 percent of them believe that we should end the war and return all hostages to start a negotiation process between us and the Palestinians.

As more of Israel's allies prepare to recognize Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week, and with France and Saudi Arabia holding a meeting to reaffirm the value of a two-state solution, Ayalon said that these developments could generate "hope."

He added: "Recognizing a Palestinian state is a very positive declaration and an important message. Everywhere, especially in the Middle East, this has great meaning and value. It is essential to create hope."

Ayalon, 80 years old, was born to Romanian immigrant parents in Palestine under British mandate three years before the establishment of the State of Israel. He received Israel's highest military honor, the Medal of Valor, for his bravery under enemy fire during the 1973 war.

He led the Israeli Navy and then the Israeli General Security Service (Shin Bet) between 1995 and 2000, after the Oslo Accords established a framework for a two-state solution to end decades of conflict. However, the plan has stalled since then, leaving vast areas of the West Bank under full Israeli control.

Since retiring from the head of the Israeli General Security Service (Shin Bet), Ayalon has become a politician and minister in the Israeli Labor Party, opposing Netanyahu's more hardline stance on recognizing a Palestinian state.

He has also become more reflective about his time in the military while fighting against Israel's enemies, which he believes has diminished the prospects for long-term peace and security.

Ayalon spoke about the conflict that has escalated beyond Gaza to strike painful blows against the country's enemies in Iran, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen: "The Israeli military campaign since October 7 can be considered 'one of the greatest military victories in history,'" adding: "We still do not realize that there are limits to what can be achieved using military force."

Military leaders are aware of this - they say it loudly and clearly to the Israeli people."

Ayalon was referring to the long line of current and former security officials who have criticized Netanyahu and the war in Gaza, which has claimed the lives of more than 65,000 Palestinians, according to Hamas. Even the current chief of staff of the Israeli army, Eyal Zamir, is said to have warned against the recent attack on Gaza City before it began.

The Mossad, Israel's equivalent of the foreign intelligence service (MI6), is believed to have refused to carry out a recent operation to kill Hamas officials in Qatar while ceasefire negotiations in Gaza were ongoing. Instead, the Israeli army conducted an airstrike that failed to kill senior leaders of the movement but was widely condemned as an attack on a Western ally.

Ayalon commented on the strike: "They (the military leadership) made a decision without considering the regional repercussions that could arise from it," adding that it recalls the failed assassination attempt of Khaled Mashal in 1997, one of Hamas's prominent targets in Doha.

On that occasion, Mossad agents were arrested in Am

The Western collective recognition of the Palestinian state: between symbolism and political pressure

Mustafa Ibrahim

Mustafa Ibrahim

Opinion Writer

In recent months, the international arena has witnessed rapid movements towards recognizing the Palestinian state, in a step described as a strategic shift in the Western stance on the Palestinian issue. Following the ongoing Gaza war for two years, which has resulted in crimes of genocide, starvation, and siege, Britain, Australia, Canada, and Portugal officially announced their recognition of Palestine, joining a growing diplomatic wave. These recognitions, despite their symbolic nature, open the door to a new equation in the relationship between the Israeli occupation, Palestine, and the international community.

This step was not isolated. Last year, European countries such as Spain, Norway, Ireland, and Slovenia recognized the Palestinian state, followed this year by Britain, Canada, Australia, Portugal, and Malta. Thus, Palestine now enjoys recognition from 145 countries out of 193 UN member states, which is about three-quarters of the international community.

Despite this momentum, the European scene remains divided: Sweden recognized Palestine in 2014, followed by a second wave in 2024, and a third wave in 2025. However, pivotal countries like Germany and Italy refuse to take this step, adhering to the American position that rejects any talk of a Palestinian state. This division reveals that recognition remains a political tool more than a binding international consensus.

From a legal perspective, international law professor Roman Luboff explains that recognition is "one of the most complex issues in international law," as it remains a sovereign decision for each state without a central mechanism to register it. Philip Sands, a British-French law professor, considers recognition a "game changer," as it places Palestine and Israel on equal footing in dealings under international law, even if it does not directly lead to a change in the balance of power on the ground.

Despite the expanding recognition, the biggest challenge lies in the limited practical outcomes. The West, so far, has not linked this step to any real sanctions or pressures on Israel, making recognition closer to a symbolic stance or political message rather than a tool for changing the ground reality.

Israel, for its part, has shown no willingness to respond positively to these developments. On the contrary, the Israeli government has escalated its rhetoric and actions: expelling Australian and Norwegian diplomats and accelerating the pace of annexation in the West Bank. In fact, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich recently hinted at severing Palestinian banks from the Israeli economic system, which some Western diplomats described as a "nuclear bomb" that could push the region towards a wide political and security explosion.

The American position remains the main obstacle to transforming Western recognition into effective policy. Washington, along with its direct allies like Germany and Italy, completely rejects the idea of a Palestinian state, considering that any step in this direction undermines Israel's security. This position limits the impact of recognition and reflects the limits of Europe's and Commonwealth countries' ability to change the rules of the game without American cover.

Despite the limited direct results, these recognitions have implications that cannot be ignored, particularly regarding Israel, as recognition places it in an increasingly isolated position in international forums, with the risk of escalating European reactions, especially if it proceeds with a formal annexation of areas in the West Bank. Such a step could push the European Union to reconsider free trade agreements or restrict economic cooperation, which would exert direct pressure on the Israeli economy.

Recognition enhances Palestine's international legitimacy and grants it a stronger position in UN institutions and international courts. However, it does not stop settlement activities, lift the siege on Gaza, or halt the bombardment. Legitimacy on paper does not necessarily mean protection on the ground.

President Mahmoud Abbas has not ceased to emphasize the implementation of all commitments and reforms that the State of Palestine has pledged, while Palestinians doubt the Palestinian Authority's ability to bring about real changes in the Palestinian system without presenting any commitments that open a national discussion and convince the general Palestinian public that the upcoming phase will establish a Palestinian system committed to democracy, peaceful transfer of power, and the rule of law.

There is a fear of the continuation of the current state of stagnation and the persistence of policies based on the interests of the upper class linked to the Palestinian leadership, and the state of denial it lives in.

Will the Palestinian leadership carry out reforms based on the will and interests of the Palestinians rather than on European conditions for renewing the Palestinian political system?

The anticipated speech by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the United Nations General Assembly will reflect the extent of the pressures he faces. Following the expansion of the wave of recognitions and the

Trump offers Arab and Muslim leaders a plan to end the war in Gaza.

U.S. President Donald Trump met on Tuesday with leaders from the Arab and Islamic worlds on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City to discuss ending the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, repeatedly describing it as "his most important meeting."

Trump told the press at the beginning of the meeting: "We want to end the war in Gaza. We will end it. Maybe we can end it now."

He added: "I have held several meetings, and this is the most important meeting for me because we will end something that should never have started."

The meeting was attended by leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia, and Pakistan. Trump stated that the meeting included "all the major players except Israel, but that will be the next meeting," referring to his planned meeting with the Israeli Prime Minister at the White House next Monday.

Trump presented the eight leaders of the Arab and Islamic countries with an American plan regarding the sector to end the Israeli genocide in Gaza, without any details being released about the contents of the plan.

As he left the meeting venue, Trump remarked: “My meeting with Arab and Muslim leaders about Gaza was great,” without further elaboration.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel, with unlimited American military, political, and diplomatic support, has been committing genocide in Gaza, resulting in over 65,000 deaths, 166,000 injuries, most of whom are children and women, and a famine that has killed 442 Palestinians, including 147 children, and has almost completely destroyed Gaza.

Trump had called in his speech before the United Nations General Assembly for an immediate end to the war in Gaza. He stated in his speech at the UN, "Those who support peace must unite in demanding the release of the hostages."

Trump added, "Some members of this body (the United Nations) seek to recognize a Palestinian state unilaterally as if they are encouraging the continuation of the conflict. The rewards will be very great for Hamas terrorists for their brutal acts."

The U.S. president described Iran as "the world's number one state sponsor of terrorism," asserting that he would not allow it to possess nuclear weapons, and he called for the destruction of biological weapons and a halt to nuclear development.

Trump harshly criticized the United Nations, considering that it has not stood by the United States to stop wars, pointing out that the process of building the organization's headquarters was marred by corruption. He also stated that he ended seven wars, some of which lasted nearly three decades, and negotiated trade deals with many countries.

29 dead, including children and displaced persons, in airstrikes by the occupation army on Gaza since dawn on Wednesday.

At least 29 Palestinian citizens have been killed, including children and displaced persons, and dozens have been injured in a series of violent airstrikes launched by the Israeli occupation army on various areas of the Gaza Strip since dawn on Wednesday, with the heaviest bombardment focused on Gaza City.

Medical sources in the Strip's hospitals reported that the death toll is expected to rise amid the ongoing shelling and the difficulty of rescue teams reaching many of the targeted locations.

The airstrike targeted a gathering of displaced persons in the center of Gaza City, where a source at the Baptist hospital reported the arrival of 17 martyrs, including children, and several injured due to this bombardment.

In Gaza City as well, which alone received 24 martyrs, a source at Al-Shifa Hospital reported the martyrdom of 5 citizens in a strike on the Sabra neighborhood, and the martyrdom of two others in an airstrike that targeted a residential apartment in the Yarmouk area.

In central Gaza, the civil defense announced the recovery of 4 dead and several injured individuals from under the rubble of a house that was hit by an Israeli airstrike in the Nuseirat camp.

Trump meets with leaders of Arab and Islamic countries: We will discuss the Gaza war and may end it now.

U.S. President Donald Trump said during a meeting with leaders of Arab and Islamic countries, including Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, that his country will work to end the war in the Gaza Strip.

Trump added that this meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, represents "the most important meeting I've ever had." He clarified at the beginning of the meeting that "this meeting will be important, and we will discuss ending the war, and perhaps we will end it now."

For his part, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that Trump's meeting with leaders of Islamic countries regarding Gaza was "very fruitful." Turkey, a member of NATO, has strongly criticized the Israeli attacks on Gaza, describing them as reaching the level of genocide.

In his remarks to reporters in New York following the meeting, Erdoğan said that a joint statement from the meeting would be issued and that he is "pleased" with its outcomes, but he did not go into details.

TRT television quoted Erdoğan as saying during the meeting that there is no war in Gaza "but an invasion and genocide," emphasizing that what is happening in the region is "killing, destruction, and the forced displacement of Palestinians."

Recognizing Palestine confuses the occupation.. Is Netanyahu risking annexation despite warnings from his allies?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu finds himself in an escalating political and diplomatic predicament following the recognition of the Palestinian state by Britain, France, and other European countries.

The Guardian published a report prepared by Emma Graham-Harrison, stating that Benjamin Netanyahu rushed to condemn the recognition of a Palestinian state by many of Israel's historical allies, but the Prime Minister may struggle to determine how to translate rhetoric into tangible responses.

Harrison added that Netanyahu's options may be more limited than his supporters would like to believe. He has repeatedly threatened to annex occupied Palestinian territories and take unilateral actions against countries that joined the wave of recognition.

She pointed out that officially claiming part or all of the West Bank would jeopardize the Abraham Accords, the historic agreement that normalized relations with regional powers, including the United Arab Emirates.

Harrison continued that the agreement is one of the most significant achievements of foreign policy during Donald Trump's first presidency, and it has been mentioned in the nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize that Netanyahu publicly aspires to, as well as being one of his notable accomplishments.

She added that the UAE, one of his key partners, has already stated that annexation is a "red line," and the collapse of the agreement poses a significant risk of alienating Netanyahu's most important supporter.

While Israel chose a unilateral response to Ireland, Norway, and Spain when they recognized a Palestinian state last year, including withdrawing ambassadors.

She noted that former Israeli diplomats said that doing the same now, as many key allies have followed suit, would be much more complicated and could harm Israel far more than its objectives.

She continued that this would accelerate Israel's trajectory towards the isolated "great Sparta" status that Netanyahu celebrated last week before retracting it after public outrage and economic warnings.

She pointed out that Alon Liel, a former diplomat who served as Israel's ambassador to South Africa, said: "I think Netanyahu is in a very difficult predicament. Israel cannot not respond, and Israel cannot respond wisely. The government is about to discuss the mistakes that should be made."

She continued that the Jewish New Year, celebrated on Monday and Tuesday, and the upcoming United Nations General Assembly meeting have given Netanyahu a chance to catch his breath while he considers his options.

Netanyahu had said that his response to Britain, France, and other countries would come after his meeting with Trump, which will take place after the American president meets with Arab leaders in New York. Before leaving, Netanyahu called for a meeting of the Israeli security cabinet to discuss potential responses to the recognition, according to Israeli media.

Harrison continued that his actions come as a clear indication of concerns about the risks of annexation, as the strongest supporters of this approach—the far-right ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich—were not invited, along with the future of the Abraham Accords that Trump and Joe Biden hoped to expand to include Saudi Arabia.

Many members of the Trump family and his allies have deep financial ties in the region.

She emphasized that internal political pressures regarding the corruption trial and upcoming elections may outweigh Netanyahu's concerns about antagonizing Trump, as Alon Pinkas, another former Israeli diplomat, stated.

Pinkas, who held previous positions including Consul General in New York, said: "Netanyahu two or three years ago would not have dared to annex anything. Netanyahu in September 2025 is mentally disturbed, detached from reality, suffering from a severe case of delusions of grandeur [about the idea that he is] redrawing the regional map, afraid of elections, afraid of his trial [on corruption charges]. If all these things point to partial annexation, he might actually do something."

Harrison noted that within Israel, the debate has swung confusingly between insisting that recognition is an insignificant gesture towards an empty symbol, and the anger towards the countries that moved forward. Across most of the Israeli political spectrum, from the far right to center-left leader Yair Golan, the step of recognizing the Palestinian state has been condemned as a "reward for terrorism."

But even if a sovereign Palestine remains more of an idea than a reality, recognition has profound legal and diplomatic implications.

The British recognition carries a special diplomatic and historical weight given the role Britain played in paving the way for the establishment of the State of Israel with the Balfour Declaration in 1917.

Liel said: "I see it as more than just a bilateral event; it should be understood from the historical perspective of the Balfour Declaration. It is a kind of correction of the British historical role."

American efforts to renew Qatari mediation regarding Gaza

The Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported, citing sources, that the Qatari track in the negotiations has been stalled since the Israeli attack on Doha.

The sources added that U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff is trying to persuade senior officials in Qatar to resume their active role in the negotiations, noting that the United States is attempting, following President Donald Trump's speech at the United Nations today, to renew Qatar's mediation regarding Gaza.

On September 9, Israel bombed residential headquarters of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in Doha, resulting in the martyrdom of 5 Palestinians and one member of the Qatari internal security, which sparked widespread Arab and international condemnation.

In his speech today before the United Nations General Assembly, the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, stated that the Israeli attack targeting the political leaders of Hamas in Doha was an Israeli attempt to obstruct the ceasefire negotiations in Gaza.

On Monday, the spokesperson for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Majid Al-Ansari, stated that the Israeli attack on Qatar was an attack on sovereignty and the principles of mediation and peace.

Al-Ansari added that the Israeli aggression targeted the principle of mediation between adversaries and resolving the conflict through peaceful means, pointing out that it was known to all parties that those who were attacked were discussing the proposal of U.S. President Donald Trump in hopes of recovering the prisoners.

The spokesperson considered that the attack targeting a residential area in Doha puts all agreements made in the region at risk, affirming that Qatar is a platform for mediation that operates around the clock.
