The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, stated that the international community is failing to fulfill its duty and has let down the Palestinians in Gaza, emphasizing that Israel is legally obligated to comply with the orders of the International Court of Justice, to stop acts of genocide, to punish those who incite it, and to ensure sufficient aid reaches Gaza.
This was said in a speech delivered during the opening of the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday.
He explained that the mass killings perpetrated by Israel against Palestinian civilians in Gaza, which cause indescribable suffering and destruction, hinder the delivery of sufficient aid to save lives, lead to civilian starvation, and kill journalists, shake the conscience of the world.
He added: "I am horrified by the public use of genocidal rhetoric by high-ranking Israeli officials."
Turk affirmed that the region is yearning for peace, and that the Gaza Strip has become a graveyard due to Israeli massacres.
He mentioned that "more militarization, occupation, annexation, and repression will only fuel more violence, revenge, and terrorism."
He continued: "The international community is not fulfilling its duty. We are letting down the people of Gaza. Where are the decisive steps to prevent genocide? Why are countries not making more efforts to prevent these horrific crimes? Countries must stop the flow of weapons that may violate the laws of war to Israel."
Turk emphasized the necessity of exerting maximum pressure to achieve a ceasefire, release arbitrarily detained prisoners, and deliver sufficient humanitarian aid to Gaza.
I am horrified by the public use of genocidal rhetoric by high-ranking Israeli officials.
