Haaretz: A Major Zionist Organization Acknowledges Genocide in Gaza

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz highlighted the acknowledgment by the president of the Jewish organization "J Street," Jeremy Ben-Ami, that what is happening in the Gaza Strip is genocide, which represents an important development in the discourse of one of the leading liberal Zionist organizations in the United States. Ben-Ami wrote in an email post that it was difficult to defend the description of the massacres in Gaza as genocide, but he later became convinced that international courts would one day prove that Israel violated the International Genocide Convention.

Ben-Ami clarified that he would no longer argue with those who describe what is happening in Gaza as genocide, acknowledging that this description has become unavoidable, especially since he had previously refrained from doing so due to the weight that the word genocide carries for the Jewish people, particularly as the son of a Holocaust survivor. He added that the victim identity that Israel has built over generations now fuels its denial of genocide in Gaza, a recognition that carries significant implications for the changing stance within liberal Jewish circles.

This acknowledgment came days after Ben-Ami appeared on the program "Save the World," where he debated journalist Mehdi Hasan, who tried to persuade him to describe Israel's actions in Gaza as genocide, but Ben-Ami repeatedly rejected this, despite Hasan citing international law. According to Haaretz, no major Jewish group has reached this extent in addressing the issue of genocide, as some progressive groups like "Jewish Voices for Peace" and "If Not Now" have been using this term for a long time, but Ben-Ami's statement is the most explicit from a prominent Jewish leader.

Ben-Ami noted that the losses caused by the war in Gaza were devastating, describing the destruction of infrastructure, the deprivation of food and basic necessities for the population, and the forced displacement of civilians as heinous acts. He wrote that the stigma of this act will remain etched in the memory of the Jewish people forever, as many have remained completely silent about what is happening, adding a moral and humanitarian dimension to the events in the region.
