United Nations: The two-state solution cannot be rejected by a vote

The United Nations said that “the two-state solution cannot be rejected through a vote,” commenting on a resolution passed by the Israeli Knesset, Thursday, rejecting the establishment of a Palestinian state.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric explained, in a press conference, that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres "is disappointed by the Israeli parliament's decision to pass the measure."

“It is clear that you cannot vote to reject the two-state solution,” Dujarric added to reporters.

He added, "Sovereignty along the 1967 borders, and Jerusalem as the capital of the two states, is the only viable way to achieve sustainable peace for the peoples of Israel and Palestine."

He continued: "Therefore, for us, the proposal that was approved clearly contradicts United Nations resolutions, international law, and previous agreements."

Guterres once again explicitly called on the Israelis and all parties not to do anything that would move us further away from the two-state solution, according to what Dujarric reported.

At dawn on Thursday, the Knesset voted by a majority in favor of a resolution rejecting the establishment of a Palestinian state, and claiming that “the establishment of a Palestinian state in the heart of the Land of Israel will constitute an existential threat to Israel and its citizens, and will lead to the perpetuation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and destabilize the region.”
