Kaila: Diabetes is the fourth leading cause of death in Palestine

Mai Al Kaila, Minister of Health, said, "Diabetes is the fourth leading cause of death in the world and at the level of Palestine."


According to a report by the Ministry of Health in 2021, diabetes causes approximately 10.6% of the causes of death in Palestine.


According to the latest survey in 2022, the incidence of diabetes for the age group 40-69 years in Palestine amounted to 20.8% of the total number of individuals, 22.3% in the West Bank and 18.3% in the Gaza Strip.


While the prevalence rate among females was higher than among men, as the survey showed that the incidence of diabetes among females in the age group 40-69 years in Palestine was about 24.3% and for males it was 17.3%.


Al-Kaila confirmed that diabetes constitutes a heavy burden on the shoulders of the state and society, and requires care and attention that begins from the moment of infection and continues for life.


She indicated that the Ministry of Health is making every effort to develop the level of services to international standards, in partnership with national and international institutions, with whom it works hand in hand in order to provide medical care that is appropriate for the Palestinian people.


Al-Kaila said: "The Ministry provides, through 495 fixed and mobile clinics, in addition to five specialized centers for diabetics, preventive and curative services for diabetes and its complications, in addition to screening for various non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, for all citizens over 40 years of age." Early detection of retinopathy and diabetic foot and its treatment to prevent amputation of the foot.
