French proposals to defuse the escalation in southern Lebanon

Military confrontations are escalating on the southern Lebanon front, as the Lebanese "Hezbollah" launched missile attacks with dozens of "Katyusha" rockets on the Meron area in the Upper Galilee in response to Israeli bombing of several towns in southern Lebanon.

This comes at a time when French Foreign Minister Stephane Ségournet from southern Lebanon announced that he will present proposals to Lebanese officials today, Sunday, with the aim of calming tension in southern Lebanon and preventing the outbreak of war.

Hezbollah announced in a statement that, on the night of Saturday-Sunday, it targeted the Meron settlement and the surrounding settlements with dozens of Katyusha rockets, "in response to the Israeli occupation's attacks on southern villages and civilian homes, especially in the towns of Al-Qozah, Markaba, and Sarbin."

The party also published scenes showing the targeting of the command headquarters and the positioning of forces of the "51st Battalion" of the Golani Brigade in the Al-Manara settlement in northern occupied Palestine.

An Israeli wounded in Meron

On the other hand, the Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported that an Israeli soldier was injured as a result of targeting the air base at Mount Meron in the Upper Galilee.

The Israeli army said that it monitored the launching of 26 missiles towards Meron, adding that it "intercepted some of them, while others landed in open areas."

Immediately, the Israeli army launched attacks on Aita al-Shaab, Maroun al-Ras, Yarin, and Tair Harfa in southern Lebanon, claiming that it had attacked Hezbollah’s infrastructure.

On the night of Saturday and Sunday, Israeli raids targeted a house in the town of Sarbin in the Tire district, wounding 14 people.

The Al-Arabi correspondent said: The Israeli aircraft targeted a three-storey house, completely destroying it. They also targeted the outskirts of the towns of Beit Lev and Al-Quzah, while several villages on the border strip were subjected to artillery shelling.

At approximately two in the morning, the Israeli army opened fire towards the town of Aita al-Shaab from its position in Birkat Risha.

Israeli reconnaissance aircraft also flew over the villages of the western and central sectors, reaching the outskirts of the Litani River until Sunday morning, launching flares over the border villages adjacent to the Blue Line.

Ségournet in Beirut

In addition, Sigourney arrived on Saturday night - Sunday in Beirut as part of a tour in the Middle East, in an attempt to defuse the ongoing escalation on the southern border of Lebanon.

After a visit to peacekeeping forces in Naqoura in southern Lebanon, Sigourney said: “If you look at the situation today... if there is no war in Gaza, we can talk about the presence of a war in southern Lebanon given the number of strikes and the impact on the region.”

He added: "I will continue messages and present proposals to the authorities here to push this region to stability and avoid the outbreak of war."

Earlier this year, Sigournet presented an initiative proposing that Hezbollah withdraw ten kilometers from the border, while Israel halts its strikes in southern Lebanon.

The French proposal did not make progress. But Paris wants to maintain the momentum of the talks and assure Lebanese officials that they must take Israeli threats to launch a military operation in southern Lebanon seriously.
