Biden: The two-state solution is the only way to guarantee the security of Palestinians and Israelis
US President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that the two-state solution is the only way to guarantee long-term security for Palestinians and Israelis, according to what was reported by the Arab World News Agency.
Biden added on the “X” platform that the United States will not stop working to achieve a two-state solution “to ensure that Palestinians and Israelis alike enjoy freedom and dignity.”
In turn, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, on Tuesday, reiterated to his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant in a call the need to increase humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The US Department of Defense quoted Austin as saying that he stressed during the call the importance of governmental and non-governmental parties avoiding expanding the current conflict in Gaza. It added in a statement that Austin briefed Gallant on the United States’ efforts to protect its forces and interests throughout the Middle East.
On Monday, Arab countries and the European Union agreed during a meeting in Spain on the need for a two-state solution in order to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, while European Union foreign policy official Josep Borrell said that the Gaza Strip should be subject to the rule of the Palestinian Authority.
Borrell said that all EU members who attended the Union for the Mediterranean Forum in Barcelona, and almost all attendees, agreed on the need for a two-state solution.
In turn, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said that the Palestinian people must decide who rules them and that any talk about managing Gaza after the conflict must focus on the West Bank and Gaza as a single entity.
The two-state solution provides for the establishment of a state for the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip alongside Israel.
The two officials spoke at the conclusion of a short meeting of the Union for the Mediterranean Forum in Barcelona, a grouping that includes 43 members from European, North African and Middle Eastern countries. Israel did not participate in this forum.
