The parent organization of the Bharatiya Janata Party pledges efforts to empower the poor in India

The National Volunteer Organization ( RSS ) of India has pledged efforts to impart technical skills to the unemployed across the country through affiliated NGOs, making them self-employed and self-reliant.

The National Volunteers Organization, of which India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is the main political body, made its commitment during a three-day event that ended Saturday in Jaipur, capital of the western state of Rajasthan.

An estimated 3,500 delegates from nearly 800 NGOs participated in the massive event.

One of the main goals is to empower women and lift people out of extreme poverty, making them part of the mainstream of society, said a senior official of the National Volunteers Organization Suresh Joshi.

In his inaugural address, National Volunteers President Mohan Bhagwat stated that the urgent need at present was to achieve equality and harmony among all segments of Indian society.

"Our goal is to empower the poor so that they themselves start contributing to society. The ideas of social service and social advancement have been present in our culture since ancient times," he added.
