Finland announced on Tuesday that it will temporarily close its consular office in Petrozavodsk , Russia .
The Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the decision comes after a significant reduction in the basic functions of the office, although it may reopen later if necessary.
Founded in 1990, the Petrozavodsk office focuses on issues related to entry, bilateral contacts, and the promotion of regional and cross-border cooperation.
Earlier this year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to close its consular office in Murmansk, which works with the Petrozavodsk office under the supervision of the Finnish Consulate General in St. Petersburg, however the Consulate General in St. Petersburg will continue its activities.
The ministry said the decision does not affect the activities of Russian diplomatic missions in Finland. Petrozavodsk is located about 300 km from Finland's southeastern border.
