Spain receives new batch of wounded Gaza children and affirms: Their care is a moral duty

The sixth batch of wounded Palestinians from the Gaza Strip has arrived in Spanish territory, comprising 20 children accompanied by their families to receive necessary medical care. The Spanish Minister of Health affirmed that these children are leaving the brutality of living conditions in the Strip in search of hope and treatment in Spanish hospitals, considering this step a source of national pride for her country.

For his part, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stressed that hosting wounded Palestinians, whose total number has reached 100 people so far, falls within a moral and humanitarian duty. Sánchez pointed to the necessity of protecting children from the horrors committed in Gaza, while also emphasizing their inherent right to return to their homes safely once their health conditions improve.

This humanitarian step comes in the context of a growing Spanish political stance against the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, with Madrid adopting the most stringent approach within the European Union. The Spanish government has translated this orientation through a series of diplomatic measures, including withdrawing its ambassador from Tel Aviv and prohibiting the entry of those involved in war crimes into its territory.

Madrid did not stop at traditional diplomatic measures but formally demanded the suspension of the partnership agreement between the European Union and Israel, an agreement that regulates trade exchange and scientific cooperation. The Spanish side believes that the continuation of this agreement contradicts the necessity of holding Israel accountable for its continuous human rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The most prominent historical moment in the course of bilateral relations occurred in May 2024, when Spain announced its official recognition of the State of Palestine. This decision prompted the Israeli government to lower its diplomatic representation and recall its ambassador, exacerbating the political tension between the two countries, which are experiencing an unprecedented rift.

On the ground, Spain has taken firm decisions to prevent cargo ships carrying weapons destined for Israel from docking in its national ports. It has also imposed strict restrictions on the passage of any activities related to the Israeli army over its territory, in an attempt to pressure for a halt to ongoing military operations in Gaza and Lebanon.

By early 2026, the scope of Spanish measures expanded to include closing airspace to aircraft linked to regional military operations, especially those related to the escalation against Iran. This stance provoked a wave of sharp Israeli criticism, with political circles in Tel Aviv describing the Spanish government as the most hostile to Israeli policies on the European continent.

Spain continues to present a different model for European engagement with the Palestinian issue, blending medical relief support with political and diplomatic pressure. Official sources in Madrid affirm that this policy stems from a principled commitment to international law and human rights, far from the narrow political calculations that govern the positions of other countries.

Our country today hosts 100 Palestinians, including 20 children, with their families to receive necessary treatment; providing care for them is a moral duty, and there is no room for neglect.
