The Israeli occupation army, in an official statement issued on Friday evening, admitted responsibility for opening fire on a Palestinian vehicle in the city of Hebron in the occupied West Bank. The admission clarified that the military force targeted a Palestinian family in their vehicle, resulting in direct injuries among civilians who were later found to have no connection to any security incidents.
This crime resulted in the martyrdom of seven-year-old child Sam Abu Heikal, who succumbed to his serious injuries from live bullets. The child's parents also sustained varying injuries, necessitating their urgent transfer for medical treatment, amidst a state of shock and widespread popular condemnation in the Tel Rumeida area where the incident occurred.
Regarding the details of the incident, military sources claimed that occupation soldiers were carrying out an operational activity in the area when one of the soldiers suspected a vehicle accelerating towards them. Based on this field assessment, the soldier fired several bullets directly at the car, which led to the tragedy that claimed the child's life and injured his parents.
Preliminary investigations conducted by the occupation army indicated that the occupants were unarmed civilians and posed no actual security threat to the forces present at the scene. Despite this admission, the statement merely indicated that the incident is still under review and scrutiny by the relevant military leadership to ascertain the circumstances of the soldier's field action.
This incident comes in the context of escalating Israeli violations in West Bank cities, where incidents of shooting at civilians under suspicion pretexts are repeated. The results of the final investigation are expected to be submitted to the legal authorities affiliated with the occupation, amidst Palestinian demands for the necessity of international prosecution of the perpetrators of these crimes against children and civilians.
Preliminary investigation showed that the injured were innocent civilians not involved in any security activity at the time of their targeting.
