The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, stressed that the current developments in the occupied Palestinian territories are following a clear path that directly aims to undermine the two-state solution. Guterres explained, during the opening of the Human Rights Council session in Geneva, that this trend represents a blatant challenge to the international will, which should not allow this reality to be imposed.
Guterres pointed out in his speech to the extent of serious violations affecting human rights and human dignity in Palestine, emphasizing that international law is subject to continuous and systematic breach. He considered that what is happening in the occupied territories reflects a state of overlooking the fundamental principles upon which the international system for protecting peoples under occupation was founded.
The Secretary-General warned of a global phenomenon of a comprehensive attack on human rights, noting that these rights are being strategically and deliberately curtailed in several regions. He pointed out that the law of force has begun to prevail over the rule of law, which threatens global stability and opens the door to further chaos and violations without real deterrence.
Guterres strongly criticized the way international law is currently being dealt with, describing it as being treated as a 'nuisance' by active powers. He added that the world is witnessing a justification for collective suffering, while civilians are used as bargaining chips for political leverage, reflecting a sharp moral decline in the management of international conflicts.
In a related context, human rights sources linked Guterres' statements to the difficult reality on the ground, where previous reports documented widespread attacks on places of worship, including damage to 45 mosques last year. These attacks come as part of an escalation policy that further complicates the humanitarian and political landscape in various Palestinian cities.
Guterres concluded his warnings by emphasizing that the collapse of the human rights system means the collapse of everything that follows it, calling on the international community to take serious action to stop this deterioration. He affirmed that silence on violations in Palestine gives a green light to the continuation of the policy of impunity, which threatens the essence of international justice.
The current path in the occupied Palestinian territories is blatantly clear and its goal is specific: to undermine the two-state solution, but the international community cannot allow that to happen.
