An Israeli newspaper reported that there are steps being taken behind the scenes to appoint Samir Halila as the new governor of the Gaza Strip. These steps come as part of discussions held by the 'Shomrin' organization with concerned figures, aiming to introduce a figure acceptable to Israel and the United States into the sector.
Samir Halila is a well-known Palestinian businessman living in Ramallah. He has extensive experience in the economic and political fields, having held several high-ranking positions in the Palestinian Authority, including Secretary of the Palestinian Government and Deputy Minister of Economy.
The campaign to nominate Halila includes support from a former Israeli political lobbyist named Ari Ben Menashe, who operates from Canada. Ben Menashe indicated that the initiative has begun to gain momentum in recent weeks following meetings in the United States and contacts made by Halila in Egypt.
Halila has close relationships with Palestinian and American businessmen and is considered close to Bashar Al-Masri, known for his projects in Palestine. Documents have been submitted to the U.S. Department of Justice indicating that Ben Menashe is acting as a mediator to support Halila's nomination.
In his remarks, Halila noted that the proposal to appoint him as governor of the Gaza Strip was raised a year and a half ago and discussed with President Mahmoud Abbas and the Prime Minister. He also clarified that the proposal includes managing civil affairs in Gaza under the supervision of an Arab League committee.
Halila explained that Hamas has expressed its approval of the proposal, but he warned that Israel may impose sanctions on Gaza if this arrangement is implemented, including closing crossings and disrupting reconstruction efforts.
The proposal also includes the entry of Arab forces into the sector after the withdrawal of the occupying army, under American supervision, with the aim of maintaining order and training the Palestinian police.
Money has never been an issue, and I paid Ben Menashe $130,000 to advance the matter.
