More than 90 lawyers in the United States called on the administration of President Joe Biden to stop arms exports to Israel, which has continued its devastating war on Gaza since October 7.
According to a report published on the American website Politico, on Tuesday, the lawyers sent a statement to the Biden administration indicating that Israel’s war on Gaza violates American laws and international law.
The lawyers pointed to opinion polls showing that a majority of Biden's supporters support a ban on arms exports to Israel.
They called on the Department of Justice to investigate whether American citizens working in the Israeli army committed war crimes in accordance with American laws.
This statement comes several weeks after the US Congress approved additional aid to Israel worth $26.3 billion.
The statement is important in its timing, before the May 8 deadline for the White House to provide evidence to Congress that Israel’s use of weapons provided by Washington is in compliance with American and international laws.
