US House of Representatives to Vote on Resolution to End Military Support for the War in Lebanon

The US House of Representatives is preparing for a crucial vote on Tuesday on a resolution aimed at halting US military support for Israeli military operations in Lebanon. This legislative move is based on the War Powers Act and comes amid growing concerns that ongoing attacks could undermine current diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran to achieve a comprehensive de-escalation in the region.

Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib is leading this proposal, which calls on President Donald Trump to end any form of US military involvement in hostilities related to attacks on Lebanese territory. The draft resolution points to the high human cost of the conflict, as military operations have resulted in the deaths of over four thousand people and forced approximately 1.2 million others to flee their homes.

This move is the second of its kind within the House of Representatives this June, following a previous attempt that failed to secure the required majority. Despite the previous failure, that attempt garnered significant support from 91 Democratic representatives in addition to Republican Representative Thomas Massie, paving the way for the issue to be re-introduced with greater political pressure.

Estimates from political organizations in Washington suggest that the new bill could receive broad support ranging from 160 to 210 Democratic representatives. This optimism is driven by the joining of prominent Democratic Party leaders to the list of supporters, most notably Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and his deputy Katherine Clark, although final passage would require a breakthrough within the Republican bloc.

For his part, Eric Sperling, Executive Director of 'Just Foreign Policy,' affirmed that merely bringing this resolution to discussion represents a historic development in US foreign policy towards Lebanon. He explained that this is only the second time Congress has seriously discussed ending military involvement on this front, reflecting a shift in political public opinion within Washington D.C.

On the ground and politically, observers believe that the continuation of Israeli military operations has become the biggest obstacle to the Trump administration's ambitions to conclude an agreement with Iran. While initial understandings call for a ceasefire on all fronts, Tehran insists that any agreement will not see the light of day without a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Lebanese territories that have been encroached upon.

In contrast, the Israeli government shows clear intransigence towards these international moves, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stating that his forces will not withdraw from Lebanon as long as he remains in office. Defense Minister Israel Katz further reinforced this position by asserting that Tel Aviv has not received any official requests from the American side for withdrawal, indicating a gap in the declared coordination between the allies.

Despite a recently reached US-sponsored framework aimed at enabling the Lebanese army to control the south, the situation on the ground remains complex. Israeli airstrikes continue to target various areas, while Tel Aviv stipulates the complete disarmament of Hezbollah before discussing any withdrawal, a condition that the party rejects outright.

Supporters of the resolution in Congress emphasize that the United States remains deeply involved in the conflict through continuous intelligence coordination and approval of military operations. They believe that the vote on the resolution is in fact a referendum on the success of the diplomatic path with Iran, where its rejection means giving the green light for continued military escalation at the expense of political solutions.

The vote on the bill essentially represents a vote on the chances of success of the agreement with Iran, and its rejection means prioritizing military operations over a political settlement.
