Alternative Educational Initiatives in Gaza to Counter University Collapse and Qualify Students for the Digital Job Market

In light of the forced absence of academic institutions due to the war that affected all aspects of the educational sector in Gaza, alternative youth initiatives and training centers have emerged as a lifeline for students. These initiatives use tents and damaged buildings as their headquarters, striving to create a new reality that connects youth with digital age skills and the global online job market, in an attempt to overcome the effects of the siege and destruction.

Ashraf Al-Issawi, the General Manager of the Canadian institution overseeing student training, explained that these centers aim to provide graduates with the necessary practical skills for their specializations amidst the collapse of the traditional educational system. He pointed out that the experience focuses on human development, educating youth, and defining their career goals, especially after the official educational process in the sector stopped for more than two years.

The objectives of these centers, established through voluntary efforts and local institutional support, are not limited to granting academic certificates. Instead, they focus intensively on programming, graphic design, translation, and content creation. According to their organizers, this approach empowers graduates to compete in international markets through freelancing platforms, while also providing parallel programs for psychological and professional support to cope with the pressures of war.

For his part, trainer Ali Saleh reviewed the enormous challenges facing the training process, primarily the limited available spaces and the continuous power outages, which force them to rely on limited solar energy. These centers also suffer from very weak internet networks and constant interference, in addition to a severe shortage of smart devices and technical equipment necessary to efficiently complete practical training.

Despite these difficulties, local data indicate a qualitative leap in youth engagement in artificial intelligence and freelancing courses, with numbers significantly doubling in recent months. Experts believe that this trend represents the only remaining window to overcome geographical and economic isolation, transforming the 'digital knowledge economy' into a national survival strategy in the face of comprehensive educational collapse.

When my university was bombed, I felt my future was over, but joining the training center here gave me hope. I didn't just learn to code; I learned how to sell my services as a freelancer to support my family.
