The Commission continued: "Some prisoners were brutally and barbarously beaten during their arrest, their homes were destroyed and vandalized during the raids, and their families were terrorized with sniffer dogs."

Borrell: The European Union wants to avoid being "dependent" on China, as it did with Russian gas

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Saturday that the European Union seeks to avoid being dependent on China as it was with regard to Russian gas , calling for strengthening trade with Latin America.

"We discovered that dependence, which was one of the elements of building peace, is also a weapon that can be directed against us," Borrell said, referring to "Europe's excessive dependence on Russian gas."

This emerged after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, when Moscow reduced gas shipments to Europe, forcing the continent to search for other supply routes.

He pointed out that this dependence "made (Vladimir) Putin believe that he can invade Ukraine with complete impunity because Europe, hostage to our gas consumption, 40 percent of which comes from Russia, will not move."

"We want to avoid making our relationship with China dependent on it, as was the case with Russia," he said in a speech at the Ibero-American Summit in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic.

Borrell considered that 2023 was an "important year" for concluding agreements in other countries, with Latin America in particular, in preparation for the summit between the European Union and the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States that will be held in July.

"Europe and Latin America have an opportunity to show that their trade relationship is still a source of progress," Borrell said, adding that European investments are more in Latin America than in Russia, China, India and Japan "combined."

A UN report issued by the Economic Commission for Latin America stated that 36 percent of foreign investments in the region amounting to $142 billion came from Europe in 2021.

Saudi Arabia is seeking a way out of the Yemen war, eight years after the start of its military operations

Eight years after the first blows of its military campaign in Yemen , Saudi Arabia is seeking to find a way out of the Yemen war, and to focus on its ambitious projects at home, despite the slim hopes of achieving lasting peace in the poorest country of the Arabian Peninsula.

Saudi Arabia may find in the agreement to resume relations with Iran, which supports the Houthis in Yemen and is accused by Riyadh of smuggling weapons to them, an impetus for its endeavor to end what appeared over the past years as a proxy war between the two regional powers.

Ahmed Naji, an expert at the International Crisis Group, told AFP that while Saudi Arabia is keen to bring about major social and economic changes in the kingdom, it is also seeking to "transform its approach in Yemen from a military strategy to a soft security and political strategy."

Naji believes that "military operations such as air strikes" may now probably stop, explaining that the priority is "a diplomatic solution."

The Saudi intervention began at the head of a military coalition on March 26, 2015, after the Houthis took control of the capital, Sanaa, and moved towards other areas in the impoverished country.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed for direct and indirect reasons, while 4.5 million people have been internally displaced, and more than two-thirds of the population lives below the poverty line, according to United Nations estimates.

A UN-brokered ceasefire between April and October led to a significant reduction in hostilities.

Before the end of the armistice, the Kingdom had begun to negotiate with the Houthis through back channels, including talks that took place between the two parties in the neighboring Sultanate of Oman.

Analysts say that Riyadh's priority now is securing the border areas and stopping missile attacks and booby-trapped drones that targeted its important oil facilities.

Naji says, "Saudi Arabia is currently negotiating with the Houthis to reach understandings that will enable it to secure its border lands while preserving its influence" in the areas controlled by the Yemeni government.

"This new approach may enable Saudi Arabia to maintain its position as a major player in Yemeni internal politics, to ensure that the kingdom is not affected by security threats in case the conflict continues at the local level," he added.

The stated aim of the Saudi intervention was to protect civilians from Houthi attacks, restore government authority, and prevent Yemen from becoming a haven for Iranian-backed forces.

But eight years later, the rebels still control large swathes of the country and possess a large arsenal of weapons that they have also used in missile attacks on Saudi Arabia and the UAE, the other important member of the coalition.

The resumption of these attacks threatens Saudi Arabia's endeavor to turn into a center for business, tourism, entertainment and sports, as part of its economic diversification plan to stop relying entirely on oil.

And Saudi Arabia, which has been closed for decades, is building the future city of Neom, worth $ 500 billion, and many resorts and tourist attractions.

"There is a great focus in Saudi Arabia now on development, tourism and mega projects," says a political expert involved in negotiations between Riyadh and the Houthis, on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media. For Riyadh, there are fears that "anything that involves conflict" will harm investment and stability.

The expert states that the informal talks with the Houthis are now ripening to turn into a possible "understanding" that could pave the way for a lesser Saudi military role before the Yemeni dialogue between the internal conflict parties under the auspices of the United Nations.

"They want to move from some form of Saudi-Houthi understanding, to the ability to hand this understanding over to a broader process of the United Nations. (...) They seek to wash their hands and avoid the repercussions of any future escalation in the conflict," he says.

"They are ... stuck in a very costly quagmire on all levels," he says.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan confirmed this month, during a visit to Moscow, the existence of "efforts to first reach a permanent ceasefire, and then launch a political process between the Yemeni parties to end this crisis."

"We will continue this dialogue, and there are dialogues across multiple tracks," the Saudi minister said.

On the other hand, Yemeni parties fear that any Iranian-Saudi agreement will come at the expense of the authority, such as the kingdom withdrawing from the conflict amid guarantees that it will not be targeted and leaving the government alone in the face of the rebels who almost controlled the entire country had it not been for the Saudi intervention in March 2015.

A Saudi official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the kingdom "shares a long border with Yemen and we certainly will not tolerate any threat to our security."

Morocco continues to write history by defeating Brazil 2-1

The Moroccan national football team continued writing history and its wonderful performances that dazzled everyone in the World Cup in Qatar late last year by reaching fourth place, when it achieved a historic victory over its Brazilian guest 2-1 on Saturday at Ibn Battuta Stadium in Tangiers and in front of 65,000 spectators in an international friendly match.
Sofiane Boufal (29) and Abdel Hamid Al Sabiri (79) scored the goals for Morocco, and Casemiro (67) scored the goal for Brazil.
It is the first victory for Morocco over Brazil in three confrontations that brought them together so far, after losing to it twice, the first in a friendly in 1997 in Belem, where it made a good presentation before falling with two clean goals in the last ten minutes scored by Denilson (80 and 88), and the second one year later, in the role of The groups in the 1998 World Cup in France in Nantes, with three goals, which were scored by Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Bebeto.
The "Atlas Lions" made a great match and stood equal to the stars of the Seleçao, especially the Spanish Real Madrid wingers, Vinicius Junior and Rodrigo, and they managed to achieve a well-deserved victory over the world number one, the first for an Arab team over the five-time world champion.
Morocco also became the second team from Africa to defeat Brazil, after Cameroon, which it defeated 1-0 in the last round of the group stage of the Qatar World Cup.
It was the first match for the Moroccan national team after its historic career in the World Cup in Qatar, when it achieved remarkable victories over Belgium, Canada, Spain and Portugal and became the first African and Arab team to reach the semi-finals before being eliminated by France, the 2018 champion, who lost the Doha final against Argentina.
Morocco coach Walid Regragui commented after the match, "We achieved what we aspired to, which is to please the huge fans who came to support us, and I think we were on time with this historic victory over a great team that has many stars and talents."
He added, "Our message today is that we will make sure to prepare a team that will fight on the field, whether we win or lose. We will always play with this fighting spirit to achieve the best results."
Coach Regragui pushed his starting line-up, which did well in Qatar and witnessed one amendment, by bringing in the promising Belgian Genk midfielder Bilal Al-Khanous, at the expense of Valladolid's Spanish player, Salim Amlah, who was absent due to injury.
French Paris Saint-Germain defender Ashraf Hakimi participated in the main, after suspicion was hanging over him due to an injury that kept him out of action in the last two weeks.
It was also the first match for the Brazilian national team since its disappointing exit from the quarter-finals on penalties against Croatia.
Brazil played the match in the absence of its defense poles Marquinhos (Saint-Germain), veteran Thiago Silva (Chelsea, England), striker Richarlison (Tottenham, England) and star Neymar (Saint-Germain) due to injury, and under the leadership of its interim coach, Ramon Menezes, pending contracting with a successor to Titi, who resigned from his post after the World Cup. diagonal.
Menezes summoned 10 players who were present at the World Cup.
The Moroccan fans, who filled the entire stands of Ibn Battuta Stadium, observed a minute of silence in honor of the legend Pele, who passed away on December 29th. The Seleçao players wore T-shirts with the name "Black Jewel" written on them.
Regragui was up to his promise that he made before the match when he played an offensive risk from the start of the match, contrary to his defensive caution that characterized him in the World Cup, but the first dangerous opportunity in the match was Brazilian when Palmeiras striker Rooney was alone inside the area after receiving a through ball from Rodrigo and hit it over the crossbar (14). ).
Morocco responded when Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech passed a cross to Bayern Munich defender Naseer Mazraoui inside the area, so he placed it on his chest and manipulated Tottenham defenders Emerson and Real Madrid Eder Militao before hitting it hard next to the left post (23).
And Rodrigo almost did it after a mistake by Mazraoui at the edge of the area, so he recklessly hit the ball, which was saved by the Spanish goalkeeper, Yassin Bono, in two waves (24).
Morocco succeeded in opening the scoring after a coordinated attack and a joint game between Al-Khanous and Boufal inside the area, so the Qatari Al-Rayyan striker finished it off with a creeping shot from close range to the right of the Palmeiras goalkeeper, Verton (29).
And Rodrigo missed the opportunity to equalize when he received a ball inside the area and hit it far from the three woods (36).
Ziyash followed suit after receiving a ball on a plate of gold from Boufal inside the area, which he hit next to the far right post (37).
Marseille's French midfielder Ezzedine Onahi almost did it with a clever shot from close range that hit Militao's foot and passed next to the far left post (37).
Vinicius responded with a deceptive shot, which passed a few centimeters over the crossbar (41).
Bono saved his goal from the equalizing goal at the beginning of the second half, by deftly deflecting a powerful shot "on the fly" by Rodrigo from outside the area into a corner that did not bear fruit (47). Onahi hit a powerful ball from outside the area, which the goalkeeper pushed away with difficulty, before the defense dispersed it (54).
The captain, Manchester United midfielder Casemiro, managed to equalize with a shot from outside the area, which escaped from Bono's hands and hit the net (67).
And the substitute, the Italian Sampdoria midfielder, Al-Saberi, succeeded in giving victory to Morocco when he took advantage of a rebound from his fellow substitute, the Italian striker Bari, Walid Chedira, after a cross pass to the third substitute, Wydad Casablanca defender Yahya Atiyatallah, hit it powerfully with his right from close range, hit the ceiling of the crossbar and hugged the net (79).

European Qualifiers 2024: Spain opens a new page with a huge victory over Norway

The Spanish national team opened a new page after its disappointing adventure in the World Cup Qatar 2022 and started its campaign in the qualifiers for the European Cup 2024 with a big victory over its guest Norway 3-0 on Saturday, in the first round of Group A competitions.
Spain owes the three points to German Leipzig player Dani Olmo, who scored the first goal (13), in his sixth international goal, before substitute Joselo added two goals in his first international match within a few seconds of fatal time (84 and 85).
The champion and runner-up of each of the ten groups, in addition to three teams from the European Nations League and the host country, qualify directly for the finals scheduled for the summer of 2024 in Germany.
And after the "La Roja" team disappointed hopes in the World Cup in Qatar last year by leaving the final price against Morocco with a penalty shootout 0-3 after they tied negatively, the new coach, Luis de la Fuente (61 years), opened the new coach, who replaced Luis Enrique on the eighth of December. December, a new page in Malaga in front of Norway.
De la Fuente summoned 23 players, of whom only 11 played in the last edition of the World Cup finals, returning to the squad goalkeeper Kepa Arisabalaga, Nacho Fernandez, Yago Aspas and Fabian Royce.
On the other hand, Norway misses its first two matches of the qualifiers in Spain and Georgia for its giant star, Manchester City's English striker Erling Haaland, who suffered a thigh injury.
Spain opened the scoring after a ball reached Alvaro Morata and from him to Alex Badi, who controlled it and passed it in turn from the left inside the area. Olmo cut it with the outside of his right foot and hit it to the left of goalkeeper Orian Nilan (13).
Norway's most dangerous chances appeared in the first half after a cross pass from Alexander Sorloth on the right side was followed by Frederick Oceans "on the fly" and Arisabalaga turned it into a corner (29).
Olmo's replacement, Yeremi Pino, missed the opportunity to double the score in the second half after he hit a ball inside the area near the post after a pass from the other substitute, Daniel Ceballos (76), before Josilo added three minutes after he replaced Morata with two goals in a minute, the first from a header (84). The second with his left foot (85).
Norway's last victory over "La Roja" dates back to June 13, 2000, with a score of 1-0 in Rotterdam, at the start of the European Cup matches.
Within the same group, Scotland, with the ambition of reaching the finals for the second time in a row and only the fourth in its history, started its journey promisingly by defeating its guest, Cyprus, 3-0.
Scotland opened the scoring in the 21st minute through John McGinn (21), then waited until the last seconds to finally settle the points thanks to substitute Manchester United star Scott McTominay, who scored the second and third goals (87 and 90 + 3).
Spain topped the group with 3 points, equal with Scotland, while Georgia, absent from this round, ranked third in front of Norway and Cyprus without points.
In Group D, and in a renewed confrontation between two teams that met in the 2020 European Cup qualifiers, the Croatian team, the third in the Qatar 2022 World Cup, overcame its Welsh guest after conceding a 1-1 equalizer in stoppage time.
Croatia opened the scoring in the 28th minute through Andrei Kramaric, who manipulated Neco Williams with skill and advanced before firing the ball from the outskirts of the area into the left corner of Danny Ward's goal.
The result remained the same until injury time, when substitute Nathan Broadhead snatched the equalizer after a header pass from Marys Mepham (3 + 90).
Consequently, the Croatian national team failed to repeat its victory at home in the first leg of the 2020 qualifiers for the 2020 finals, with a score of 2-1, before they tied in the second leg 1-1 in the fifth group competitions, from which the two teams qualified, and the first in the lead, by a difference of three points.
In the same group, and despite the hostile atmosphere in Yerevan, Turkey managed to resolve its politically sensitive confrontation with its host Armenia 2-1, in a meeting during which it fell behind with a goal scored with friendly fire by its defender Ozan Kabak (10) before it responded with Orkon Kokcho (34) and Karim Akturkoglu. (64).
In Group Nine, Switzerland began its campaign to qualify for the sixth major finals in a row strongly, by defeating its "host" Belarus 5-0.
Switzerland has not missed the European Cup finals since 2012 and the World Cup since 2002, and it seems a strong candidate to obtain one of the two group nine cards to the German 2024 finals, and this was proven on Saturday in Serbian Novi Sad, where Belarus played in the first round due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Amid talk about the possibility of excluding Belarus from the qualifiers, similar to what happened with Russia, the Swiss, who reached the quarter-finals of the 2020 edition and the eighth final of the Qatar World Cup 2022, hit hard and settled the three points in the first half hour thanks to Renato Stephen’s hat-trick (4, 17 and 29), before they scored. Arsenal player Granit Xhaka adds the fourth (62) and substitute Zaki Amdouni fifth (65) in the second half.
Coach Murat Yakin's team hopes to confirm this strong start when it faces Tuesday at home with Israel, which tied Saturday with its guest Kosovo 1-1.
Switzerland topped the group with three points, with a goal difference from Romania, which defeated modest Andorra 2-0, scored by Dennis Mann (34) and Dennis Alibek (49).
And the match witnessed the expulsion of Andorra player Marc Rebes in the 61st minute.

And because the numbers will gradually increase, the concerned authorities have developed their plan to take into account the expected densities at the public transport stations at the entrances to Makkah and the vicinity of the Third Ring Road and next to the Holy Mosque of Mecca, and depend on the distribution of this density in the chosen paths to reach the Holy Mosque of Mecca, while organizing the paths of entrances and exits in order to achieve the safety of the crowds. during entry and exit.

Likewise, in terms of accommodation, it depends on what the pilgrim determines according to his needs and capabilities, especially since Makkah has about 1,100 hotels, most of which are around the Great Mosque of Mecca, and these hotels are classified between one and five stars, and these hotels are subject to periodic control from the concerned authorities, including the defense. Kuwait's political crises hinder its quest to catch up with the growth of its neighbors

Kuwait is the most open country in the Gulf in terms of the political system, but it is witnessing frequent political crises that hinder its desire for reform and widen the gap between it and neighboring oil countries.

Kuwait's population of about 4.5 million people complain about the deterioration of infrastructure and public services in the country, which owns about 7 percent of the world's oil reserves. Its sovereign wealth fund is one of the largest in the world.

Kuwaiti businessman Ahmed Al-Sarraf says, "I am not reassured, and I feel great anxiety about my family, the future of my grandchildren, their education, and my health, because hospitals do not provide adequate treatment, even though I am financially capable."

These complaints contrast with the situation in neighboring countries such as the UAE or Qatar, where the quality of life has improved significantly in recent years thanks to the influx of foreign investment.

"The state's identity was liberal when Kuwait was creative and open in the eighties," Al-Sarraf recalls with regret, adding, "While we went out, countries grew around us."

In an indication of its declining attractiveness, Kuwait ranked last among 52 popular destinations for foreign expatriates in the annual survey of the International Organization in 2022, while its neighbor, the UAE, ranked sixth.

In contrast to other Gulf states, Kuwait enjoys an active political life and a strong parliament, though the keys to power remain primarily in the hands of the ruling Al Sabah family.

Ministers are often appointed from the royal family, but some soon face questioning in parliament amid accusations of mismanagement and even corruption.

These constant tensions between the executive authority and parliamentarians, which led to the change of many governments and the dissolution of parliament several times, impeded any attempt at reform and reduced the appetite of investors.

Researcher at the Arab Gulf States Institute, Christine Diwan, believes that the problems of governance in Kuwait are reflected in "the failure of planning and the increase in social difficulties."

Gulf economist Justin Alexander notes that the country has "very little debt, the world's largest sovereign wealth fund as a percentage of GDP, and the world's largest oil reserves per population."

However, "the political imbalances in recent years prevented it from taking the necessary measures to control the increase in spending, generate non-oil revenues, and diversify its economy," according to the expert.

The country, which suffered from a large budget deficit during the Covid-19 pandemic, has rebounded with the rise in oil prices, which account for 90 percent of its revenues, in the last year.

As Kuwait, led by 82-year-old Crown Prince Mishaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, struggles to implement a reform plan approved in 2018, neighboring regimes, led by a new generation of officials, are multiplying projects to diversify the economy and reduce dependence on black gold.

The last government promised to deal with important issues such as development projects and the fight against corruption, but it resigned on January 23, after only three months of its formation, and then this month the parliament, which the opposition occupied the majority of its seats, was dissolved due to “mistakes” in the decision to dissolve the parliament that preceded it. .

Parliament was preparing to pass a controversial bill requiring the state to cover consumer and personal loans contracted by Kuwaitis, to the dismay of the government, which considered the measure too costly.

"As in many Western democracies, Kuwait's semi-parliamentary system suffers from social divisions and populist demands," says Diwan.

Kuwaiti analyst Bader Al-Saif wrote on Twitter, "The Kuwaiti street is exhausted," denouncing the "permanent stalemate."

"Politics in Kuwait needs to be reset," he added, calling for "a national dialogue and a new constitution."

21 people were arrested in Venezuela as part of an anti-corruption campaign

At least 21 people, including ten official employees, have been arrested in Venezuela as part of an investigation into corruption in the state-owned oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela, announced Saturday, Prosecutor Tarek William Saab.

"We have ten arrested officials," said Saab, speaking of the new toll of arrests within the framework of the process that began last week and is still ongoing.

This anti-corruption “campaign,” as it was called by senior Venezuelan officials, including President Nicolás Maduro, led to the resignation of Oil Minister Tarek El Aissami, who was considered a key man in power. Among the 21 arrested are a number of his close associates.

Saab said he expects dozens more arrests, noting that those arrested are accused of "seizing or embezzling public property, abuse of power, money laundering, forming a gang, and treason."

Among those arrested was a deputy of the national oil company, Antonio Jose Perez Soares, and former deputy Ogbil Roa, one of the founders of the Venezuelan cryptocurrency Petro.

As for the 11 arrested persons who are not official employees, they are businessmen. One of them, Daniel Pietro, was arrested in the Dominican Republic while trying to escape.

The Public Prosecutor's report stated that the official employees carried out "oil operations parallel" to those established within the national company in Venezuela "by loading crude oil on ships (...) outside the supervision of the administration."

The Public Prosecutor did not reveal the value of the embezzlement, but the newspapers talked about "three billion dollars."

Hermann Askara, a deputy in the ruling party, spoke of $23 billion.

President Maduro, who has previously carried out anti-corruption operations in the country, said Monday that investigations were launched in October. He was especially impressed by the lifestyle of those officials who lived with great "opulence" like the "nouveau riche".

Since 2017, several investigations have affected the oil sector in Venezuela, which led to the arrest of about 200 employees and two oil ministers, Ológio Del Pino and Nelson Martinez. The latter died in prison.

Saab also explained that three judges were arrested last week on suspicion of corruption in cases unrelated to the current "campaign".

He also confirmed the arrest of Pedro Hernandez, the mayor of Tejerias in the northern center of the country, where the "El Conejo" gang, led by Carlos Gomes, was wreaking havoc. The authorities killed the latter on Thursday.

Turkey stops importing oil from the Kurdistan region of Iraq, according to the Iraqi Oil Ministry

On Saturday, Turkey stopped importing oil from the Kurdistan region in northern Iraq , after an international arbitral tribunal ruled in favor of Iraq in a dispute over a case related to the export of the region's oil between Baghdad and Ankara, according to the Iraqi Oil Ministry.

A spokesman for the Iraqi Oil Ministry, Asim Jihad, told AFP that "Turkey has informed the Kurdistan region authorities to stop exports, in compliance with the court's decision."

And according to a document issued by the Iraqi oil shipping office in the Turkish port of Ceyhan, which Jihad confirmed, "At 12:35 on 3/25/2023, pumping was stopped from the stations on the Turkish side."

This measure, which the Turkish authorities have not yet commented on, comes following the decision of the arbitral tribunal at the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris, which ruled in favor of Iraq in its dispute with Turkey over oil exports from the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

This dispute dates back to 2014, when Baghdad filed a lawsuit against its neighbor Turkey before the arbitral tribunal, objecting to Ankara’s announcement to export the oil of the Iraqi Kurdistan region to global markets without the permission of the Iraqi government.

The Iraqi government, which has tense relations at times with the authorities of the Kurdistan region of Iraq, strongly opposed the Turkish decision, considering that it is the only party entitled to manage oil exports from the region and its revenues.

Despite Baghdad's opposition, Erbil was exporting oil through Turkey. The region's export rate is about 450,000 barrels per day.

According to a statement by the Iraqi Ministry of Oil on Saturday, the ruling issued by the international arbitral tribunal "obliges all parties to respect international agreements and covenants in this regard" and confirms "that the Ministry of Oil, through the Iraqi Oil Marketing Company + SOMO +, is the only entity authorized to manage export operations through the Turkish port of Ceyhan." ".

Based on the ruling issued on Thursday, the ministry said in its statement that it “will discuss mechanisms for exporting Iraqi oil through the Turkish port of Ceyhan with the concerned authorities” in the Kurdistan region and “with the Turkish authorities to ensure the continuation of oil exports, and the fulfillment of SOMO obligations with international companies through the port.” Jihan".

For his part, the head of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, announced in a tweet that a team from the Kurdistan Regional Government "will visit Baghdad tomorrow for dialogue, to build on the goodwill of our discussions."

The oil file is a major contentious file between the central government in Baghdad and the authorities of the autonomous Kurdistan region. Erbil believes that the central government seeks to put its hand on the region's oil wealth, while Baghdad demands that it have a say in managing the oil resources that are extracted from Kurdistan.

Iraq is the second largest oil country in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), and it exports an average of 3.3 million barrels of crude oil per day.

Iran vows to respond "immediately" to any attack on Syrian bases

Iran pledges to respond "immediately and mutually" to any attack on bases established on Syrian soil "to combat terrorism" at the request of the Syrian government, an Iranian spokesman said today (Saturday).

This was stated by the spokesman of Iran's National Security Council, Keyvan Khosravi, in response to recent accusations made by some US officials regarding Iran's "engagement" in attacks on what Iran considers "illegal" US bases in Syria , the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported.

He stressed that the American side, using "false" accusations, resorted to the blame game to escape the possible consequences of its "illegal occupation" of parts of Syrian territory for its military forces.

He pointed out that Washington could not attribute the confrontations of the occupying countries with the American forces to other countries through "spreading lies."

He stressed that Iran has incurred heavy costs to "combat terrorism and maintain permanent security" in Syria, adding that Tehran will oppose and confront any move that endangers Syria's stability.

Iran has said it has an advisory role in Syria and is in the country at Damascus' request.

Mikati cancels a session of the Lebanese government and denounces the attempt to create a sectarian division

Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced (Saturday) the cancellation of a cabinet meeting the day after tomorrow (Monday) due to circumstances related to an attempt to drag the country into a "sectarian division to fuel conflicts and give an administrative procedure a sectarian bias."

Mikati stressed, in a statement he issued this evening, that he assumes the constitutional responsibility with patriotic conviction, "but without allowing us to be drawn into suicide or into something that does not resemble our convictions."

Mikati had called for a government session to be held the day after tomorrow with a single item, which is to discuss ways to mitigate the effects of the decline of the Lebanese pound and financial conditions on salaries and wages.

In his statement, Mikati stressed that "the representatives and concerned political and spiritual leaders have the responsibility to elect a new president and form a new government, so let each party bear its responsibility."

He believed that "the process of electing the President of the Republic constitutes the priority required to complete the convening of constitutional institutions and restore full order to the Lebanese state."

On October 31, Lebanon entered a presidential vacuum with the end of the term of former President Michel Aoun, without electing a successor, as the political division and the lack of agreement by the parliamentary blocs on a consensual figure led to the failure of Parliament 11 times since last September to elect a new president for the country.

The presidential vacancy coincides with a resigned, caretaker government since last May, which paralyzes the work of public institutions amid a severe financial and economic crisis since 2019, which the World Bank ranked among the worst in the world in 150 years.

Mikati stressed that "what is required of parliamentarians alone is to elect the president and not to hesitate in carrying out this constitutional duty."

And he considered that "some are trying to divert attention from his obstruction of the election process or his failure to secure the consensus required to complete this election, by aiming again at the government, which is striving to ensure the continuity of the work of public utilities and address basic issues."

He added, "National and political leaders, instead of taking international positions and warnings about the seriousness of the situation into account, and uniting to complete the required solutions (...) We are witnessing, instead, an attempt to drag the country into a sectarian division to fuel conflicts, and to give a purely administrative procedure an obnoxious sectarian curve."

A decision by Mikati, issued the day before yesterday (Thursday), to postpone the summer time for a month, exceptionally for this year, sparked a new political crisis in the country.

Daylight saving time begins globally this year on March 26, but Mikati decided to extend winter time until April 20.

The positions of the Lebanese were divided between those who adhere to the continuation of work in the winter time and those who refuse to do so, committed to bringing forward the clock as of midnight.

The Maronite Patriarchate, the Lebanese Forces, the Free Patriotic Movement, the Kataeb, and the Christian Free Patriots announced their non-compliance with the government decision, and called for maintaining the daylight savings time, which was scheduled to start at midnight today (Saturday). The hour is presented as 60 minutes.

The Patriarchate said in a statement that the decision was issued "surprisingly and improvised, without consultation with the Lebanese components, and without any regard for international standards."

In the context, a statement issued by the head of the Free Patriotic Party, MP Camille Chamoun, announced that "the international time will remain away from the defective sectarian time of Lebanon's international interface."

In turn, a member of the "Free Patriotic Movement", Representative Cesar Abi Khalil, considered in a tweet on social media that "the presidents of the House of Representatives and the ministers were not entitled to unilaterally make the decision."

The head of the "Lebanese Forces" party, Samir Geagea, called for "returning from the decision before it is too late," and considered that the decision to postpone work in summer time "will hinder many businesses, especially at the level of air traffic and international companies."

A member of the Kataeb Party, MP Salim al-Sayegh, stated that "the Speaker of Parliament cannot confiscate the powers of the Presidency of the Republic or the government as a whole and take such a decision."

The decision to postpone work in daylight savings time coincided with the spread of a video on social media showing Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri asking Prime Minister Najib Mikati to postpone daylight savings time in consideration of those fasting during the month of Ramadan.

Objections also came to the decision to delay work in daylight saving time against the backdrop of repercussions in terms of problems and disturbances in software, applications, navigation, travel, and electronic devices that automatically adopt Universal Daylight Saving Time in their operations.

A number of media outlets and commercial and economic institutions also announced that they will start working in daylight saving time at midnight, according to the universal time, due to the technical repercussions of violating the decision and its negative repercussions.

A Yemeni soldier was killed in a Houthi march attack in Yemen

A Yemeni soldier was killed and two others wounded Saturday in a drone attack by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the south of the country, a government official told AFP.

A military source in the besieged city of Taiz confirmed the outcome of the attack, the latest in the conflict in Yemen , despite diplomatic efforts to stop the conflict, which has been going on since 2014.

The drone attack targeted a military checkpoint "before the passage of a convoy including the Minister of Defense, Major General Mohsen Al-Daari, along with the Chief of Staff, Major General Sagheer bin Aziz, while they were heading to the city of Taiz, besieged from three sides by the Houthis," according to the government official, who requested anonymity.

A security official said, "The governor of Taiz was part of the minister's convoy and the chief of staff's convoy, along with Saudi officers from the leadership of the Arab coalition, but the targets were carried out at a checkpoint where soldiers were gathering to receive the delegation."

Taiz, Yemen's third-largest city, is under the control of the Saudi-backed government, but it is besieged by the Houthi rebels, who seized swathes of the country in a decade-long war.

The clashes that erupted on Monday in the oil-producing Ma'rib governorate, one of the main battlefields and the government's last stronghold in the north, left 10 soldiers dead, according to military sources, AFP.

The escalation comes in light of the growing international efforts to end the ongoing war in the poorest country in the Arab world.

Yemen has witnessed a bloody conflict since 2014 between forces loyal to the internationally recognized government and the Houthi rebels. The conflict escalated with the intervention of Saudi Arabia at the head of a military coalition in March 2015 to stop the Houthis' advance after they took control of the capital, Sana'a.

Since then, the conflict has killed tens of thousands of Yemenis and caused a humanitarian crisis that the United Nations described as the worst in the world, with the displacement of millions of people.

Earlier this month, Riyadh and Tehran agreed to resume diplomatic relations after seven years of severing them, which revived hopes for a truce in Yemen, where the two countries support two warring parties.

However, analysts ruled out that the sudden announcement of March 10 would be able to put an end to the conflict immediately.

Hundreds of thousands demonstrate against the Netanyahu government for the twelfth consecutive week

Hundreds of thousands of Israelis demonstrated, Saturday evening, in Tel Aviv and several areas and crossroads in Israel, to protest the government of Benjamin Netanyahu and its plan to weaken the judiciary and undermine the Supreme Court, for the twelfth consecutive week.

More than two hundred thousand people participated in the main demonstration, which started from Habima Square in central Tel Aviv, towards Kaplan Street.

At the "Karkur" intersection in the Hadera area, the Israeli police assaulted the protesters, used water cannons to disperse them, and arrested four of them, after closing Road No. 65 to traffic.

Supporters of the "Likud Party" attacked the demonstrators against the government in the city, "Or Akiva" near Haifa, which is considered one of Netanyahu's strongholds.

Tens of thousands demonstrated in Haifa, Beersheba, Ashdod, Netanya, Herzliya and Raanana, and a massive demonstration took place in front of the residence of Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Jerusalem.

The Israeli police closed many streets, coinciding with the protest demonstrations.

The demonstrators demanded Netanyahu's resignation, and held up banners with slogans written in Hebrew, English and Arabic, including: "Palestinian lives matter," "A people occupying another people cannot be free," "Netanyahu, Smotrich, Ben Gvir, a threat to peace in the world," and “Yariv Levin (Justice Minister) is an enemy of democracy,” “It is time to bring down the dictator,” “The government of shame,” “Bibi (Netanyahu) is disqualified,” “Apartheid does not stop at the Green Line,” and “No one is above the law.” Levin's judicial reforms are the end of democracy.

The Netanyahu government seeks to make radical amendments to the judiciary and against minorities, and to legitimize "racism and discrimination," which a wide segment of Israelis considers "targeting democracy and undermining the judicial system."

Yesterday, Friday, the organizers of the protests against the Netanyahu government and the plan to weaken the judiciary announced that they would escalate their protest steps during the next week, following his statements and his emphasis on "continuing legislation in order to reform the judiciary," as he put it.

The organizers of the protests said in a statement they issued, "The current week will witness days of national paralysis and protest steps in front of members of Knesset and ministers in the government, in addition to organizing a mass demonstration in Jerusalem."

They added that "on Sunday and Monday, protests will be organized in every place where Knesset members and ministers are, until we paralyze their programs and deliver our message that the dictatorship will not pass."

They emphasized that "the pace of the protests will escalate on Tuesday, unlike what the country's streets witnessed in the previous days. Next Wednesday will witness paralysis and large protests in the morning hours, before the demonstrators then head to Jerusalem to participate in a large demonstration in front of the Knesset headquarters."

The organizers of the protests acknowledged that "there will be other protests on Thursday," but they refused to disclose them at the present time.

Protest organizers said that "the struggle will rise to another level, and the reason for this is Netanyahu's attempt next week to take control of the Supreme Court and appoint judges to rule blatantly, in light of the violation of the conflict of interest agreement and the decision of the Supreme Court and the judicial advisor to the government."

They pointed out that "we are entering a fateful week in the history of Israel, especially as the current government is tearing the people apart and dismantling the Israeli army and economy."

They added: "In the face of the attempt to turn Israel into a dictatorship, millions will take to the streets in order to defend it and its independence, and every Israeli who wants to live in democracy must take to the streets and oppose dictatorship at any cost and paralyze the state. We are not afraid of a long road, and our people will triumph and democracy will triumph."

Netanyahu said in a press conference held on Thursday that judicial legislation aimed at weakening the judiciary will continue next week, in violation of the conflict of interest agreement that prevents him from dealing with his government's judicial plan that would affect his trial on corruption charges.

The government's judicial advisor, Gali Bharav Mayara, sent a message to Netanyahu, warning him that his interference in the judicial coup was illegal, noting that he "violated the Supreme Court's decision, according to which, as a prime minister accused of felonies, he must refrain from taking steps that raise a reasonable suspicion of inconsistency."
