New York Times: Israel eased its rules for bombing Hamas fighters

The New York Times published a report by a group of its correspondents today, Thursday, in which it said that Israel eased and facilitated restrictions and rules for pursuing Hamas fighters, after the attacks of October 7, 2023, which led to doubling the killing of civilians in the besieged Gaza Strip.

“At 1 p.m. on October 7, the Israeli military issued an order unleashing one of the most intense bombing campaigns in modern warfare,” the report says. “The order, which went into effect immediately, gave mid-ranking Israeli officers the authority to strike thousands of militants and military sites that had not been a priority in previous wars in Gaza. Officers could now go after not only senior Hamas leaders, weapons depots and rocket launchers that had been the focus of previous campaigns, but also lower-ranking fighters.” In each strike, the order says, officers had the authority to risk killing up to 20 civilians.

The newspaper explains that “according to the Israeli military protocol, there are four categories to avoid endangering civilians: Level zero, which prevents soldiers from endangering civilians; Level one, which allows the killing of five civilians; Level two, which allows the killing of up to 10 civilians; and Level three, which allows the killing of at least 20 civilians. The latter became the standard in effect after the attacks of October 7.”

“According to four Israeli officers involved in selecting the targets, the strikes, which put more than 100 civilians at risk, were sometimes allowed to target a handful of Hamas leaders, as long as senior generals or sometimes the political leadership approved,” the paper says. “Three of them said the targets were Ibrahim Bayari, a senior Hamas commander who was killed in northern Gaza in late October, in an attack that Airwars estimates killed at least 125 others.”

According to the newspaper, "This matter, which has not been reported before, has never happened in the history of the Israeli army. Never before have middle-ranking officers been given such freedom to attack such a large number of targets, many of which were previously less important."

The New York Times investigation found that Israel severely weakened the system of safeguards intended to protect civilians; relied on flawed methods for finding targets and assessing the risk of civilian casualties; routinely failed to conduct post-strike reviews of civilian harm or punish officers for wrongdoing; and ignored warnings from within its ranks and from senior American military officials about these failures. The New York Times reviewed dozens of military records and interviewed more than 100 soldiers and officials, including more than 25 people who helped vet, approve or strike targets, whose combined accounts provide an unparalleled understanding of how Israel waged one of the most brutal air wars of this century.

Most of the soldiers and officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were barred from speaking publicly on such a sensitive topic, the newspaper reported. The New York Times verified the military orders with officers familiar with their content.

In its investigation, The Times found that:

· Israel dramatically expanded the range of military targets it sought to hit in preemptive airstrikes, while simultaneously increasing the number of civilians that officers could endanger in each attack. This led Israel to fire nearly 30,000 munitions into Gaza in the first seven weeks of the war, more than it fired in the next eight months combined. In addition, the military leadership removed a limit on the cumulative number of civilians its strikes could endanger each day.

· On a few occasions, senior commanders approved strikes on Hamas leaders that they knew would each put more than 100 noncombatants at risk—a threshold that would exceed an unusual threshold for a contemporary Western military.

The military struck at a pace that made it difficult to confirm it was hitting legitimate targets. It burned through much of its prewar database of vetted targets in a matter of days and relied on an unproven system for finding new targets that made extensive use of artificial intelligence.

· The military often relied on a crude statistical model to assess the risk of civilian harm, sometimes striking targets hours after they had been located, increasing the risk of error. The model relied primarily on estimates of cellphone usage in a broader neighborhood, rather than the intensive surveillance of a specific building, as was common in previous Israeli campaigns.

· From the first day of the war, Israel greatly reduced its use of so-called “roof knocks,” or warning shots that give civilians time to flee an impending attack. When it could have used smaller or more precise munitions to achieve the same military objective, it sometimes caused greater damage by dropping “dumb bombs,” as well as 2,000-pound bombs.

The air campaign was at its most intense during the first two months of the war, when more than 15,000 Palestinians were killed — or nearly a third of the total death toll, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants, the newspaper reported.

The paper claims that from November 2023 onwards, amid global protests, Israel began conserving ammunition and tightening some of its rules of engagement, including halving the number of civilians who could be harmed when striking low-ranking militants who posed no imminent threat. But the rules are still more lenient than they were before the war. Since those first weeks, more than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed, and while Israel disputes the ministry’s figures, the total continues to rise.

The investigation indicates that in the first weeks of the war, more than 30,000 Palestinians were killed. While Israel disputed the figures, the death toll continued to rise.

When the newspaper presented the results of its investigation to the Israeli army, it responded with a 700-word written statement, in which it admitted that the rules of engagement had changed after October 7, but stressed that its forces had consistently used means and methods that adhered to the rules of law.

The statement added that the changes came in the context of a conflict "unprecedented and incomparable to other theaters of hostilities around the world," citing the scale of the Hamas attack, the militants' efforts to hide among civilians in Gaza, and Hamas's extensive tunnel network.

Israel, which has been accused of genocide by the International Court of Justice, claims that it takes measures before strikes, such as emptying entire cities and taking down posters. It accuses Hamas of being responsible for the bloodshed. However, the newspaper says that the rules for ensuring that the Israeli army complies with international law, which officers and lawyers participate in, were not followed after the October 7 attacks.

The danger to civilians was also increased by the Israeli military's extensive use of 1,000- and 2,000-pound bombs, many of them US-made, which accounted for 90 percent of the munitions dropped by Israel in the first two weeks of the war.

By November, two officers said, the Air Force was dropping so many one-ton bombs that it was running short of guidance kits that convert unguided weapons, or “dumb bombs,” into precision-guided munitions, forcing pilots to rely on less accurate bombs.

The New York Times concludes its investigation by noting that last July, Israel fired several missiles at Hamas militants, including top commander Mohammed Deif, killing at least 57 people, according to Airwars, an organization based at the University of London.

Israeli officers also acted with near-total impunity. Only two officers are known to have been fired for their role in the air campaign, after they oversaw a drone strike that killed several foreign aid workers whom the officers mistaken for militants.

The military said a committee appointed by the chief of staff was investigating the circumstances of hundreds of strikes, but no one had been charged.

Researcher Prof. Dr. Al-Houdaliyeh publishes a joint research paper on “Heritage and Conflict in Gaza” issued by the international publishing house Springer

Professor of Archaeology at the Higher Institute of Archaeology at Al-Quds University, Prof. Salah Al-Hudaliyya, published a joint research with his colleagues from An-Najah National University, Dr. Louay Abu Al-Saud, and from Al-Istiqlal University, Mr. Ayman Warasneh, entitled “Heritage and Conflict in Gaza,” in the “Palgrave Encyclopedia of Cultural Heritage and Conflict,” published by the international publishing house Springer.

Through it, the researchers called on the international community and all international institutions concerned with cultural heritage to assume their responsibility to protect the sources of Palestinian cultural heritage, which is an integral part of human heritage.

The principal researcher, Prof. Salah Al-Houdaliyya, explained that there are 354 archaeological sites and historical landmarks in the Gaza Strip, and it has been shown that more than 60% of them have been partially or completely destroyed during the current aggression, such as: Tell Al-Sakn, Tell Al-Ajul, Tell Umm Amer, Anthedon, the historic Jabalia cemetery, the Byzantine Church in Jabalia, the Church of Porphyrius, the Great Omari Mosque in Gaza City, the Katib State Mosque, the Kamaliya School, the Pasha Palace, Dar Al-Saqa, the Ottoman Archives, Barquq Castle, and others. The machine of destruction has gone so far as to kill a number of workers in the field of antiquities and cultural heritage, which poses a real challenge to the future of the antiquities of the Gaza Strip.

Prof. Al-Houdaliyya explained that the Gaza Strip has a special character in the melting pot of the motherland. In terms of its total area, it was approximately 1,200 square kilometers until 1931. This area shrank in 1945 to 1,111 square kilometers due to the “administrative reform” during the British Mandate period. It shrank dramatically for the second time in the year of the Nakba (1948) to approximately 555 square kilometers. It then shrank again to 365 square kilometers in 1950 as a result of the “Auja/Coexistence Agreement” between Egypt and Israel signed on February 26, 1950. Thus, the area of the Gaza Strip before the current Israeli aggression constituted 1.33% of the area of Mandatory Palestine (during the British Mandate period).

He pointed out that the geographical location of the Gaza Strip played a role in attracting people with their different cultures and civilizations to settle there since the late Stone Age until now without interruption. Cities, ports, villages, commercial inns, castles, and architectural monuments were established there; a number of them are distinguished by exceptional global values that qualified them to be registered on the World Heritage List. Gaza is always vibrant.

Prof. Al-Houdaliyya recalled an incident that is more than 2,300 years old, when all the cities of the Levant surrendered to Alexander the Great, and Gaza remained resistant, refusing to surrender until he was able to control it and punish its ruler and its residents.

Prof. Al-Houdaliyya explained that the idea of writing the research came after he received a letter in the early days of the war on the Gaza Strip from the first editor of the encyclopedia asking him to shed light on the cultural heritage in the Gaza Strip and the horrors of destruction and obliteration it is being subjected to. Believing in the necessity of strengthening the Palestinian heritage and its existence, researcher Al-Houdaliyya began working on it in partnership with his colleagues from other universities to strengthen the research partnership locally and globally.

The Palgrave Encyclopedia of Cultural Heritage and Conflict is a prestigious academic encyclopedia that documents and analyzes the relationship between cultural heritage and conflict. It explores the impact of conflicts (whether military, political, social or cultural) on cultural heritage, and how wars and crises affect heritage sites, historical monuments and cultural patterns.

Israeli incursion into southern Lebanon, UNIFIL concerned about continued violations

The Lebanese army announced on Thursday that Israeli forces had penetrated several areas in the south of the country, in a new violation of the ceasefire agreement and a clear assault on Lebanese sovereignty. The Lebanese army explained in a statement that Israeli forces had penetrated the areas of Qantara, Adshit al-Qusayr and Wadi al-Hujayr, stressing that the Lebanese deployment there had been reinforced and the situation was being monitored in coordination with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

The Lebanese army indicated that its forces closed the roads leading to Wadi al-Hujayr due to Israeli movements, while the army command confirmed that it is following up on the situation in coordination with UNIFIL and the five-member committee tasked with supervising the implementation of the ceasefire agreement.

According to the Lebanese News Agency, Israeli military vehicles penetrated through Wadi al-Hujayr to the town of Qantara, where they opened heavy fire during combing operations, forcing many residents to flee to the neighboring town of al-Ghandouriya.

The agency reported earlier that the number of Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement exceeded 300 violations since it came into effect on November 27, which resulted in the killing of 32 people and the injury of 38 others.

International concern

For its part, UNIFIL expressed its deep concern over the continued Israeli violations, and stated in a statement that "the destruction carried out by the Israeli army in residential areas, agricultural lands and road networks in southern Lebanon constitutes a clear violation of UN Resolution 1701."

The UN Security Council passed Resolution 1701 on August 11, 2006, following a 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. The resolution put an end to hostilities between the two sides and established a comprehensive framework aimed at maintaining peace and security in the region.

The statement stressed that "any actions that threaten the fragile cessation of hostilities must cease immediately," noting that UNIFIL is working closely with the Lebanese Armed Forces to accelerate the redeployment south of the Blue Line and ensure that the area is free of weapons not belonging to the Government of Lebanon or peacekeeping forces. The mission added that it urges the Israeli military to commit to a gradual and timely withdrawal and to respect the Blue Line as part of the overall path towards peace.

The past period has witnessed repeated Israeli violations, which has complicated the humanitarian and security situation in the south. The Israeli aggression on Lebanon since the beginning of the escalation last September has led to the killing of 4,063 people and the wounding of 16,663 others, including a large number of children and women, in addition to the displacement of about 1.4 million people.

Despite international efforts to ensure stability, the escalation of Israeli violations raises fears of a new round of escalation, amid repeated calls from the United Nations to fully adhere to international resolutions and respect Lebanese sovereignty.

In the northern Gaza Strip, as was the case in the center and south, corpses and bodies are piling up in front of its doors and in its corridors, and shrouds for the dead are not available, due to the huge numbers of martyrs, and funeral prayers are held for those who are present and in the hospital yards for those who the rescue and civil defense teams are able to retrieve, and nothing is heard except the voices of relatives in a state of crying and intense sadness.

If some journalists were able to enter the hospitals from the inside, the conditions seemed very tragic, as doctors struggled against time to treat those who could be treated, but often the stock of medicines runs out, and doctors are forced to prioritize treating the most serious cases, and some of the wounded are forced to wait several days until their turn comes to receive a dose of treatment.

Despite these catastrophic conditions, Israel did not consider the humanitarian aspect, but ignored it and insisted on storming and destroying hospitals, killing and arresting doctors and nurses, with the aim of paralyzing and freezing the work of the teams in order to increase the number of martyrs and dead, among the wounded who are waiting for treatment.

Such conditions have prompted the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) to issue a dire warning that attacks on hospitals in northern Gaza in recent days are having a devastating impact on civilians still in the besieged areas.

The Office expresses deep concern about what happened, in light of reports that the occupying army stormed the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza, forcing its occupants to evacuate, and carried out attacks on and around Al-Awda and Kamal Adwan hospitals, the two other health facilities still operating on a limited basis in northern Gaza.

All these measures against hospitals, in addition to the Israeli siege on Beit Hanoun, Beit Lahia and parts of Jabalia in the North Gaza Governorate for the eightieth consecutive day, obviously create a tragic reality that indicates conditions of destruction for the lives of civilians who need hospital services urgently and urgently.

The pressure of the United Nations and its partners to reach the area on a daily basis to provide support to the thousands of people who remain there in dire conditions has not been met, and the Israeli authorities continue to reject attempts by the United Nations to coordinate humanitarian access to the besieged areas in the north, as none of the attempts coordinated by the United Nations to reach the area have been fully facilitated.

In central and southern Gaza, the office says a new assessment by partners working to alleviate hunger in Gaza found that during the first half of December, bread and legumes dominated household meals for the third month in a row, with other types of food mostly absent.

Reports indicate that 90% of households have experienced a further decline in access to food compared to last November, amid reduced availability and significantly higher prices.

These worrying health and nutritional data will undoubtedly have widespread destructive effects on the citizens of Gaza, especially since they strike them at the heart of their lives, threaten their health and reduce the amount of food they eat.

Another color and continuous scene of the Israeli war that targets livelihood and seeks to kill the wounded, shroud the sick, bury the injured, prevent them from living, and continue the starvation campaign by cutting off all means of their medicine and food.

Palestine's Christmas Message

In a world dominated by appearances and superficiality, relationships between people seem like facades devoid of depth and honesty, where people are judged by what they possess in terms of material things, not by the values and principles they hold. However, in the midst of this falsehood, there come moments that awaken a new awareness in us, when we see the suffering of others, and we realize how small our concerns are compared to their pain.

From Palestine, a land that blends the sanctity of history with the pain of the present, I address my message to all those who live in relative safety in different parts of the world. Here, in this land, people struggle daily for their basic rights. In Palestine, children dream of education, while fear and destruction surround them, and fathers and mothers bid farewell to their martyred sons or try to gather the remnants of their lives after their homes were demolished. Despite all this, Palestinians remain hopeful, believing in their right to life, refusing to surrender to the injustice of the occupation.

The scenes of the Palestinian cities - Jabalia, Nuseirat, Khan Younis, Rafah, Beit Lahia, and Beit Hanoun - have become symbols of steadfastness and suffering in the face of the killing and destruction machine. These cities bear stories that bear witness to the brutality of the Israeli occupation, and the silence of the world that chose to turn a blind eye to the suffering of an entire people.

To those who live in peace, I invite you to reflect on your life and the blessings that surround you. How many times have you complained about simple burdens while others live under rubble or behind bars? How many times have you grumbled about the details of your daily life while others spend their years in the darkness of prisons? True gratitude is not just words said, but a deep awareness of what we have, and turning this gratitude into actions that alleviate the suffering of others.

With the advent of Christmas, we recall the message of Christ, peace be upon him, who was born in Bethlehem, on the land of Palestine. His message came carrying the light of peace, justice and love. Today, Palestine, which witnessed his birth, suffers from an occupation that fears the light of truth more than any weapon.

The message of Christmas is not just a celebration, but an invitation to every human being to be part of the change. The world today needs your voices, your actions, and courageous positions that stand with truth and justice. Palestine is not a cause far from you, but rather a human cause that concerns everyone with a living conscience.

Share their stories, support their people, stand for justice everywhere. And remember this Eid, as you gather with your loved ones in warmth and reassurance, that there is a people who suffer but do not lose hope. Be part of this hope, and help end injustice, alleviate suffering, and spread the message of justice and peace.

On this glorious holiday, as another year approaches its end, our hopes remain renewed despite the challenges. While Christmas is celebrated in many parts of the world as a new beginning and renewed hope, in Palestine we live this meaning every moment, amidst the ongoing suffering and challenges. Every day is a new opportunity to cling to life, a new hope to survive, and to keep the flame burning in our hearts despite all the difficulties.

On this holiday that embodies the values of love and peace, we call on the entire world to stand with the Palestinian cause and transform feelings of solidarity into real actions of support and advocacy, as restoring the inalienable Palestinian rights is the basis for building a more just and humane world, where tolerance prevails and dignity and freedom are achieved for all peoples.

Justice will not be achieved except by activating the rights of all peoples without exception. Let us work together to achieve a more tolerant and humane world, where everyone enjoys freedom and dignity. Let us make our solidarity a true stand for the truth, and let us build together a future that establishes the values of peace and justice for all peoples.

The battle of confrontation and the conditions of victory

It is not permissible for you, as a civilian and not an athlete, to go up to the ring to challenge a boxer or wrestler, because he will hurt you and defeat you, but you can defeat him with reason, awareness and belief in what you have right, outside the ring, where you can outdo him.

In a people's war, the loss should not be greater for the oppressed people than for the unjust colonizer. Rather, the people's battle must be based on exhausting the enemy and making its occupation costly. Otherwise, the people's battle will be a loss in favor of the superior enemy.

The Israeli colony has superior capabilities and potential, military, human, technological, and intelligence, while the Palestinian people have limited capabilities, but they have faith in the justice of their cause, and a high willingness to sacrifice, and the doors are closed to them, due to the extremism of the enemy, and the capabilities and support available to them.

The first weapon that the Palestinian people possess, and that annoys their colonizers, is the demographic factor, as they have more than seven million Palestinian Arabs on the entire geography of their land, and they have multiple factions and parties, from Fatah, Hamas, the Popular Front, the Democratic Front, the People’s Party, the Jihad Party, the Palestine Liberation Front, the Arab Front, the Popular Struggle Front, and others, in the areas of 1967, and they have conscious and capable parties, the vanguard of which is the Democratic Front, the Communists, the Islamic Movement, the National Democratic Assembly, the Arab Movement for Change, the Arab Democratic Party, and others in the areas of 1948.

He also has the justice of his demands embodied in the United Nations resolutions, foremost among which are Partition Resolution 181, the two-state solution resolution, and the refugees’ right of return resolution 194, both of which are the basis of Palestinian rights internationally, and dozens of similar complementary resolutions, and what they represent from international institutions: the Criminal Court, the Court of Justice, UNESCO, the General Assembly, etc.

Therefore, the leaders of the resistance factions must be aware and focused on what must be done, and stay away from adventure and extremist behavior, as it is harmful and hurtful to them and their people. Here is the October 7 battle, a clear indication of the conclusion and result, despite its importance and what it produced, but its results are heavy losses in martyrs and destruction.

Therefore, similar adventures must be avoided, whether in Jerusalem, the West Bank, or the 1948 territories. We remember with them the results of the first civil uprising in 1987, and the amazing results it gave, and the most important achievement the Palestinian people made in their history, after the first achievement: the birth of the PLO and the launch of the Palestinian revolution before 1967. This does not mean that armed struggle is illegitimate and illegal, but it is not the only form through which results can be achieved through victory and the restoration of rights.

Preserving the survival of the Palestinian people within their homeland is the first task of the leadership and factions, and avoiding the loss of survival and steadfastness on the homeland, in the face of colonial settlement, and in the face of plans for displacement, expulsion and homelessness, whether forced or voluntary, in addition to the fact that the Palestinian people are the fertile incubator for the leadership, cadres and fighters, and therefore it is necessary to preserve it, and not to dissipate its presence and steadfastness.

The second task is to preserve the capabilities of the factions and the potential of the parties, popular institutions, unions and creative institutions, so that they can continue their work in the face of the plans of the racist colony.

The third necessary task is to avoid armed operations carried out only by limited groups and small numbers, no matter how great their choices for sacrifice are, and no matter how painful their blows are, but they are limited in comparison to the greatness of the people and their enormous abilities for work, dedication and sacrifice.

Finally, without national unity, a coalition, between Fatah and Hamas, and the rest of the factions in the 1967 areas, and without a political electoral coalition in the 1948 areas, between the Democratic Front for Peace and Equality, and the Unity Bloc of the Islamic Movement, the Palestinian national movement will not be able to achieve its aspirations and gradual, cumulative goals in: equality, independence, and return.

The support committee needs support!

As soon as she stops talking in a low voice, she returns to the forefront again, through leaks attributed to anonymous sources, talking about names that will be assigned specific tasks to manage the “next day” in the slaughtered sector.

The “Community Support Committee” entered the stock market, in an attempt to circumvent Netanyahu’s impossible conditions for the “day after” in Gaza, which does not accept the existence of “Fatahstan” or “Hamasstan.” These conditions are identical to the conditions of the mother-in-law for the daughter-in-law, who called on her to gather sticks “neither from the sun nor from the shade, neither crooked nor independent.”

All the “gossip on the banks of the Nile” before it went to China, which was interspersed with smiles, laughter, and keenness to capture the fleeting moments of kisses, hugs, and pats on the shoulders between the enemy brothers, did not succeed in dispelling the doubts, fears, and apprehensions that had settled in the minds and hearts of the parties.

On the dangerous edges of the division, its sharp protrusions, and its rough terrain, concepts emerged, and phrases were coined such as “no state in Gaza, and no state without Gaza,” and “we left the government, but we did not leave power.” Throughout the lean years, “consensus” governments were formed that deepened the rift, and from them emerged committees for reconstruction, while rubble piled upon rubble, before the flood descended upon Gaza.

From the dreams of “Singapore” to the nightmares of the soul commanding the “Emirate”, down to the depths of the “Community Support Committee”, the narratives of the discourse fall from the heights, dreams become humble, hopes recede, and we leave the government after the government, to a “Support Committee” in need of support.

Between optimism and skepticism... Is the Gaza war about to end?

The White House has lowered its expectations for a prisoner swap deal between Hamas and Israel that would lead to a full ceasefire in Gaza before the end of the year, an informed source said.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that until the end of last week there was great optimism that negotiators would be able to overcome obstacles and reach a ceasefire in Gaza, “or at least reach an understanding on a binding agreement for both parties, under which irreversible frameworks would be set, including initial steps and the way forward after that.”

“When President Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, went on his last visit to Israel (December 12), he said he believed an agreement on a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of the hostages could be near, as Israel had indicated its readiness and there were signs of movement from Hamas,” the source said. “Now, I think there is a sense of frustration in the White House that an agreement has not been reached as hoped, after the mutual accusations between Israel and Hamas about who is responsible for last-minute setbacks that could take negotiations back to square one.”

The source pointed out that the officials are busy with Christmas, and we may see a renewal of energy and negotiating spirit after the holidays.

Indicators rose last Sunday about the proximity of reaching a ceasefire agreement, amid cautious optimism from the US administration, which seeks to achieve a breakthrough before the end of Joe Biden's term on January 20, and the announcement by the Palestinian factions that the agreement is "closer than ever."

On Wednesday, Hamas issued an official statement accusing Israel of imposing new conditions that led to delaying the agreement on the release of hostages and a ceasefire.

The movement indicated that the negotiations taking place in Doha with Qatari and Egyptian mediation are proceeding "seriously," but added that Israel's raising of new issues related to the ceasefire, the exchange of hostages, and the return of the displaced caused the agreement to be disrupted.

For his part, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to Hamas' statement by accusing the movement of backtracking on previous understandings, stressing the continuation of efforts to return the hostages.

Netanyahu's office said in a statement that "the Hamas terrorist organization is lying again, backtracking on the understandings that were reached, and continuing to make it difficult for negotiations. However, Israel will continue its tireless efforts to return all the kidnapped."

In turn, the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation reported, quoting sources "informed" of the negotiations aimed at reaching a truce in Gaza, that the talks "did not collapse," noting at the same time that the head of the Hamas movement in Gaza, Mohammed Sinwar, "showed more hardline positions compared to his late brother Yahya Sinwar."

The Israeli delegation returned from Qatar on Tuesday after days of deadlock in the negotiations. The sources explained that this deadlock "resulted from Hamas's refusal to provide a list of the names of the detainees, living and deceased, who will be released in the first stage of the deal."

She pointed out that Hamas "ignores the pressures of the mediators, as Mohammed Sinwar has shown more hardline positions compared to his brother Yahya."

However, the Israeli authorities stressed that if progress was made in the talks, "the delegation could be sent again."

Israeli police disperse Tel Aviv protest demanding prisoner swap deal

Israeli police dispersed a demonstration in front of the Ministry of Defense in Tel Aviv on Wednesday evening, demanding a prisoner exchange deal with Hamas.

Before they were dispersed, hundreds of families of Israeli prisoners demanded that decision-makers in Israel be pressured to move forward towards a deal to release their relatives, who are prisoners in the Gaza Strip.

The police justified the dispersal of the demonstration by reporting a suspicious person in the area.

The demonstration came after Hamas announced in a statement today that it was postponing reaching a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, due to Israel setting new conditions related to withdrawal, prisoners, and the return of displaced persons.

Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli sources called on the government to make decisions regarding the negotiations.

Prisoner exchange negotiations have faltered more than once due to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's insistence on maintaining control over the Philadelphi Corridor on the Gaza-Egypt border and the Rafah land crossing.

Netanyahu also insists on keeping his forces in the Netzarim corridor, which lies in the middle between the north and south of the Gaza Strip.

For its part, Hamas insists on a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Strip and a complete cessation of war.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel, with American support, has been waging a genocide on Gaza, resulting in more than 153,000 Palestinian martyrs and wounded - most of them children and women - and more than 11,000 missing, amid massive destruction and famine that has decimated children and the elderly, in one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the world.

Damascus announces finding a surprise inside the security square of the ousted regime

Two security sources affiliated with the Ministry of Interior of the Syrian caretaker government revealed a surprise that the new security authorities found inside the security square affiliated with the ousted regime in the Kafr Sousa area in the center of the capital, Damascus.

One of the sources told AFP that the new authorities in Syria burned large quantities of drugs, including about one million Captagon pills that were widely produced during the rule of ousted President Bashar al-Assad.

The agency's photographer reported that security personnel set fire to quantities of cannabis, boxes of Tramadol (a tranquilizer), and about 50 small bags containing pink Captagon pills in the courtyard of the former regime's security square in Damascus.

A source in the General Security Department said, “The security services affiliated with the new Syrian government found a warehouse for narcotics while combing the capital, Damascus, specifically inside the security square in the Kafr Sousa area,” while another source confirmed the discovery of “nearly or more than a million pills, which we burned immediately.”

On December 8, Syrian armed factions overthrew Bashar al-Assad, after a lightning attack that began on November 27 from northern Syria.

After ruling the country for 24 years, Assad fled to Moscow, marking the end of more than 50 years of Assad rule over the country.

Bashar al-Assad's rule was known for the production of Captagon, which turned the country into a drug state and flooded markets in the Middle East with this substance, a scourge that reached neighboring Iraq and some Gulf states.

US sanctions were imposed on a number of Syrian officials, as Washington suspected them of being involved in this drug trade.

"Protecting the community"

Since the rapid collapse of Bashar al-Assad's rule, large quantities of Captagon pills have been found in various areas of Syria, stacked in warehouses or military bases.

Fighters from the armed factions alliance led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham say they have found a huge quantity of drugs and have vowed to destroy them.

The drugs were destroyed today, Wednesday, in the "security square" that was heavily guarded and surrounded during the ousted regime in the Kafr Sousa neighborhood of Damascus, and also contained prisons and detention centers in basements underneath it.

A member of these forces named Hamza explained, “The security services affiliated with the new Syrian government found a warehouse for narcotics while combing the capital, Damascus, specifically inside the security square in the Kafr Sousa area.”

He stressed that the destruction of the stock of "substances including alcohol, cannabis, Captagon pills, and hashish sticks" comes "to protect Syrian society and cut off smuggling routes belonging to companies that were run by the Assad family."

He added that this incident is not the first of its kind, as the security services have found other warehouses and drug production factories and destroyed them.

Captagon has turned Syria into the world’s largest drug-dependent country, generating more than $10 billion in revenue, and has become Syria’s biggest export, surpassing all of its legal exports combined, according to estimates based on official data compiled by Agence France-Presse during a 2022 investigation.

The conflict, which erupted in 2011 after a peaceful protest movement was violently suppressed by the regime of Bashar al-Assad, has killed more than half a million people and displaced millions.
