The Iranian Revolutionary Guard arrested a prominent lawyer

Paris - (AFP) - Iran's Revolutionary Guards have arrested prominent lawyer Mostafa Nili, one of more than a dozen lawyers arrested during the crackdown on protests that erupted after the death of Mahsa Amini, his sister announced.

Fatima Nili wrote on Twitter that members of the Revolutionary Guards intelligence arrested Nili at Mehrabad International Airport in Tehran on Monday evening, before raiding his mother's house and confiscating personal belongings.

Saeed Dehghan, another prominent lawyer believed to be abroad, confirmed Nili's arrest in a Twitter post.

Dehghan said Nili was one of the "few hopes of citizens against a political system that is an enemy of lawyers" and also against the Revolutionary Guards, which "considers itself the law."

Security forces have launched a campaign of mass arrests of artists, dissidents, journalists and lawyers since protests erupted over Amini's death on September 16.

Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman, died three days after she was arrested in Tehran by the morality police for violating the Islamic Republic's strict dress code.

Security forces, including the Revolutionary Guards, have killed at least 186 people during the crackdown on the women-led protest movement, according to the Norway-based Human Rights Organization in Iran.

A total of 118 people have been killed in separate demonstrations since September 30 in Sistan-Baluchestan, a predominantly Sunni province on the southeastern border between Iran and Pakistan.

Thousands of people have been arrested in the crackdown, including more than a dozen lawyers who were working to defend those arrested before they too were taken into custody.
