The United Nations Human Rights Council issued a strongly worded statement demanding that the Israeli occupation authorities end the detention of Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, and release him immediately and unconditionally from Israeli detention centers.
The UN body affirmed in its report issued today that the continued deprivation of Dr. Abu Safiya's freedom while he is in the Gaza Strip falls under the category of 'arbitrary' detention, which violates international conventions, stressing the need to protect medical personnel and ensure their safety in light of the current circumstances.
This international call comes at a time when warnings of targeting Palestinian medical professionals are escalating. The Council stressed that the detention of personnel who provide vital humanitarian services constitutes a grave violation of legal and human rights obligations, calling on the international community to pressure for the implementation of this humanitarian demand.
The deprivation of Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya's freedom in Gaza is an arbitrary measure, and he must be released immediately.
