Major Italian cities witnessed a wave of strikes and massive demonstrations on Monday that paralyzed vital sectors, in response to the labor unions' call for a national mobilization day "to denounce the genocide in Gaza," demanding immediate sanctions on the occupation, and pressuring the Italian government to recognize the State of Palestine.
In the capital, Rome, hundreds of high school students demonstrated in front of the main "Termini" station, waving Palestinian flags and chanting "Free Palestine," while the movement of many bus and metro lines was disrupted.
Notably, port workers closed the docks in the coastal cities of Genoa and Livorno, in an escalatory move aimed at disrupting trade.
These popular movements come on a decisive diplomatic day, during which France and other European countries are set to recognize the State of Palestine.
