The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, expressed his deep shock at the scale of the humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip and the immense suffering endured by civilians, especially children, reiterating the unified European call for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire.
In a series of statements reflecting the official position of the Council, which represents the leaders of the 27 member states of the European Union, Michel emphasized the necessity of the immediate application of international humanitarian law and rejected any attempt to use starvation as a weapon of war.
He affirmed that "international humanitarian law applies to all parties and prohibits the use of starvation as a weapon of war," in a clear reference to the restrictions imposed on the entry of life-saving aid into the region.
I am shocked by the scale of the humanitarian disaster in Gaza and the suffering of civilians, especially children.
