In leaked recordings, Aharon Haliva, the former head of the military intelligence of the occupation "Aman," admitted his responsibility for the intelligence failure that led to the attack on October 7. He confirmed that the intelligence agency believed up until that date that it was "capable of everything," reflecting an excessive confidence in their abilities.
Haliva pointed out that the events of October 7 require "a much deeper correction," and he refused to consider them merely a passing incident. He explained that what happened necessitates a dismantling and reassembly of the ideas and strategies being used.
He also warned of the possibility of a repeat of the intelligence failure similar to what happened in the "Yom Kippur War" of 1973, stating: "When I was asked if it could happen again, I said yes. It can happen again."
Regarding the night of the attack, Haliva downplayed its significance, noting that intelligence operates amidst a massive amount of individual information that is difficult to act upon all at once. He explained that he received one call from his assistant about the existence of an "event" in the southern region.
Haliva also revealed the plans of the Shin Bet for an assassination operation targeting leaders in Hamas, such as Mohammed Deif and Yahya Sinwar, indicating the occupation's repeated intention to target Palestinian leadership.
In a controversial statement, Haliva justified the number of martyrs in Gaza by saying that "the fact that there are even 50,000 dead in Gaza is necessary and required for future generations," reflecting a harsh view towards Palestinian suffering.
Haliva also criticized members of the occupation government, pointing to their lack of experience, particularly National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, whom he described as having been an outcast before becoming a member of the security cabinet.
Haliva questioned how informed Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich was regarding intelligence information, reflecting a lack of trust in the political leadership's competence in dealing with security issues.
50 Palestinians must die for every person on October 7.
