Lebanese Minister Threatens: We Will Not Allow Hezbollah to Drag the Country into Suicide

Lebanese Minister of Justice Adel Nassar confirmed on Sunday that Hezbollah will choose suicide if it refuses to hand over its weapons, and that the government will not allow it to drag the country into that fate. This came through a post on X platform, ahead of a Cabinet session to discuss the issue of restricting weapons to the state and enhancing its sovereignty over all Lebanese territory.

Nassar stated, "If Hezbollah chooses suicide by refusing to hand over its weapons, it will not be allowed to drag Lebanon and its people with it," according to the Lebanese official agency. He explained that illegal weapons have become a burden threatening internal stability and opening the door to security, economic, and diplomatic disasters for which all Lebanese bear responsibility.

Earlier, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced that the Cabinet will discuss during its next session the issue of asserting the state's sovereignty over its entire territory, including disarming Hezbollah and restricting weapons to the state. For his part, Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem confirmed that the party will not hand over its weapons for the sake of Israel, pointing out that the priority now is reconstruction and stopping the aggression.

On July 4, Qassem stated that those who demand the resistance to hand over its weapons should first demand the departure of the Israeli occupation, considering that criticism should be directed at the occupation and not the resistance. President Joseph Aoun also revealed that the United States has made proposals regarding the exclusivity of weapons, clarifying that the amendments made will be presented to the Cabinet soon, including stopping Israeli attacks, the withdrawal of occupying forces, and asserting the state's authority over all territories, including the weapons of all armed forces.

In a related context, the commander of the Lebanese army confirmed that the non-withdrawal of Israeli forces from the south is the only obstacle to completing the deployment of Lebanese units, amid ongoing escalation in southern Lebanon where Israel continues to violate the ceasefire agreement that has been in effect since late November 2024. Since the beginning of the Israeli aggression in October 2023, which developed into a wide war, more than 4,000 have been killed and 17,000 injured.

On November 27, 2024, a ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah and Israel came into effect, but Israel violated it more than 3,000 times, resulting in 262 deaths and 563 injuries. Despite this, Israel carried out a partial withdrawal from southern Lebanon, while continuing to occupy five hills it seized during the last war.
