A high-ranking Egyptian official said that Cairo renewed its refusal to operate the Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip, in light of Israel’s control over the Palestinian side of it since May 7.
He stated that Egypt “reaffirmed its refusal to operate the Rafah crossing in light of the Israeli occupation.” According to Cairo News Channel, he was quoted without naming him.
He added, "Egypt coordinated with the United Nations to allow aid to enter the Gaza Strip through the Kerem Shalom crossing temporarily, until the Rafah crossing is back in operation."
The Egyptian official indicated that the relevant agencies coordinated with United Nations officials to enter 2,272 trucks during the past three weeks. It was not clear whether she had actually entered or was awaiting entry.
On May 24, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and his American counterpart, Joe Biden, agreed to transfer aid through the Israeli Kerem Shalom crossing and deliver it to the United Nations until the mechanism for operating the Rafah crossing was discussed.
In early June, Cairo witnessed a tripartite meeting between Egypt, Israel, and the United States, to discuss the mechanism for operating the crossing, without yielding results for reopening it.
The government media office in the Gaza Strip says that the Israeli army has allowed aid to enter the Strip except in a very limited manner since it occupied the Rafah crossing on May 7th.
