Scholz: It is "very important" to "quickly" secure ammunition to Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Thursday that it is "very important" to secure "quickly" ammunition to Ukraine in order to counter the Russian invasion.

"We will decide with our European partners new measures to ensure better and uninterrupted supplies" of munitions to Ukraine at the EU summit next week, Schulz said in a speech to parliamentarians in the Bundestag.

He added that Germany was "ready to open up its supply projects to other member states" of the European Union.

He reaffirmed that the first economic power in Europe "will continue its political, financial, humanitarian and military support to Ukraine as long as it is necessary."

For weeks, Kiev has been asking for more ammunition to defend itself against the Russian invasion, at a time when battles are intensifying in Bakhmut (east).

The Ukrainian army constantly warns of a shortage of 155 mm shells for the guns it uses.

European Commissioner for Industry Thierry Breton recently announced that Europe will move to increase production of munitions destined for Ukraine, including "15 factories in 11 EU countries".

He told Radio Monte Carlo on Monday, "We have to move very quickly, as the tragic war in Ukraine that (Russian President) Vladimir Putin started, is about to turn into a face-to-face trench warfare, and there is of course a race to send the largest amount of ammunition from both sides," noting that the Ukrainians " They depend" on Europe to supply them with ammunition.
