5 years imprisonment for the isolated leader of Myanmar

Bangkok - (dpa) - A court controlled by Myanmar's ruling military junta on Wednesday sentenced the country's isolated leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, to five years in prison, sources familiar with the proceedings said.

It is the first ruling among 11 other corruption charges Suu Kyi faces under the anti-corruption law. Each of these charges carries a possible maximum prison sentence of 15 years.

Suu Kyi was convicted of allegedly accepting a bribe of $600,000 in cash and gold bars from the former chief minister of Yangon, which she denied.
Journalists and members of the public were prevented from attending the trial.

She has already been sentenced to six years in prison for five less serious charges, including possession of a walkie-talkie and violating coronavirus restrictions.
Suu Kyi, 76, faces prison sentences totaling more than 160 years.
