The Tragedy of Palestinian Displacement and the Plight of a People Facing Genocide and Forced Expulsion

The suffering of the Palestinian people did not begin with the war of extermination that the Gaza Strip has been subjected to since October 2023; rather, its roots go back more than a century, since colonial powers began paving the way for the Zionist project in Palestine. With the Balfour Declaration in 1917, followed by the imposition of the British Mandate over Palestine, the doors to Jewish immigration were opened, settlements were established, and armed gangs were formed that carried out acts of killing and displacement against the Palestinian population. In 1948, the great Nakba occurred, during which more than 750,000 Palestinians were displaced from their cities and villages, and more than 500 Palestinian villages were destroyed, turning an entire people into refugees in their homeland and in neighboring countries. Since that date, the cycles of suffering have not stopped, whether in refugee camps or under the occupation that expanded to include what remained of Palestine after the 1967 war. Despite the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993 and the establishment of the Palestinian Authority, Israel continued its policies of settlement, land confiscation, and the Judaization of Jerusalem, while the dream of an independent Palestinian state receded in the face of the intransigence of Israeli governments and widespread Western support for them. The recent Gaza war revealed the cruelest face of this project. Since its outbreak, the Strip has been subjected to widespread destruction operations that included residential neighborhoods, hospitals, schools, universities, and water and electricity facilities. Estimates indicate that more than a quarter of a million people have been killed, injured, or are missing, including tens of thousands of children and women, in addition to the displacement of more than two million Palestinians within the Gaza Strip, in one of the largest waves of forced displacement in contemporary Palestinian history. The tragedy was not limited to killing and destruction, but also included siege, starvation, prevention of humanitarian aid, and targeting of shelters and tents where civilians sought refuge. Health and educational institutions also suffered massive destruction, leading to a near-complete collapse of basic services, in flagrant violation of the principles of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, which guarantee the protection of civilians during armed conflicts. In displacement camps, Palestinians live in extremely harsh conditions; families search daily for food, water, medicine, and shelter, while the suffering of the sick, wounded, children, women, and the elderly worsens. With the continued siege, the closure of crossings, and the restriction of the work of relief organizations, life seems like a daily struggle for survival. What is happening in Gaza cannot be separated from a broader political context that seeks to reshape the Palestinian demographic reality by pressuring the population and pushing them towards forced migration. Many leaders of the Israeli far-right have expressed visions based on reducing the Palestinian presence and imposing new realities on the ground, which threatens the future of the entire Palestinian issue. In the face of these plans, Palestinians have once again demonstrated their attachment to their land and their rejection of displacement, despite the extent of sacrifices and suffering. However, steadfastness alone is not enough unless it is accompanied by real Arab, Islamic, and international support that strengthens people's ability to remain on their land. Therefore, the priority today must be to ensure the continuous flow of humanitarian aid, rebuild what the war destroyed, support the health and education sectors, and enable international institutions, foremost among them the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), to perform their humanitarian role away from political pressures. It also requires more effective international legal and diplomatic action to hold accountable those responsible for war crimes and grave violations suffered by civilians. Palestinians have lived for more than seventy-seven years between refuge, occupation, and wars, but they have remained committed to their right to survival, freedom, and return. Therefore, the real battle today is not only to stop the war, but to protect the Palestinian human being, strengthen their steadfastness, and thwart all projects of forced displacement and ethnic cleansing, so that Palestine remains for its people, and its people remain a living witness that the will to survive is stronger than all attempts at uprooting and extermination. =============================== In the face of these plans, Palestinians have once again demonstrated their attachment to their land and their rejection of displacement, despite the extent of sacrifices and suffering. However, steadfastness alone is not enough unless it is accompanied by real Arab, Islamic, and international support that strengthens people's ability to remain on their land.
