The Republic of Fiji opened its embassy in the occupied city of Jerusalem on Wednesday, thus joining a very small number of countries that have taken this controversial step, which contradicts United Nations resolutions and international consensus.
Fiji's Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, participated in the inauguration ceremony held at the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem, in the presence of his counterpart, the Prime Minister of the occupation, Benjamin Netanyahu.
This step comes in complete disregard of international legitimacy decisions, foremost among them Security Council Resolution 478, which calls on all countries to withdraw their diplomatic missions from Jerusalem, and considers that the status of the city should be determined through negotiations between the Palestinians and the occupying entity.
The relationship between the two countries is based on our common interests, mutual aspirations, and mutual respect.
