The European Parliament adopts a resolution calling for the recognition of the State of Palestine and condemns the "blockade" of aid to Gaza.

In a notable political move, the European Parliament on Thursday called on the member states of the Union to consider recognizing the State of Palestine, emphasizing that this aims to achieve a two-state solution.

This call came as part of a non-binding resolution adopted at the Parliament's headquarters in Strasbourg, with a majority of 305 votes in favor, 151 against, and 122 abstentions.

The resolution primarily addressed the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, expressing deep concern over what it described as the 'catastrophic' situation there.

The resolution strongly condemned what it termed the 'Israeli government's blockade of humanitarian aid to Gaza,' holding it responsible for causing 'famine' in the northern part of the territory.

In this context, European lawmakers urged the immediate opening of all border crossings to ensure the unobstructed flow of aid.

They also called for the urgent 'renewal of the mandate and funding of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA),' stressing the need for it to be under 'strict oversight,' while simultaneously expressing their rejection of the current aid distribution mechanisms.

The resolution, presented by the Social Democrats, Greens, and Renew Europe groups, was titled 'Gaza on the Edge: The EU's Action to Combat Famine, the Urgent Need to Free Hostages, and Move Towards a Two-State Solution.'
