Borrell calls for suing the European Union for its silence on the genocide in Gaza.

The journalist Claudio Pérez -in an article for the Spanish newspaper El País- stated that the former High Representative for Foreign Affairs of the European Union, Josep Borrell, called on member states to sue the Union's institutions for their failure to act regarding the war in Gaza.

He added that several countries have expressed support for the establishment of a Palestinian state or are preparing to take this step ahead of the upcoming United Nations meeting. Borrell's statement -according to the article- comes at a time when the conviction among European peoples, especially in Spain, is growing that what is happening in the Gaza Strip amounts to "genocide," amid increasing calls for decisive stances towards Israel.

Pérez pointed out that thousands of academics and thinkers in Europe and the United States have described the military escalation as "genocide," yet Brussels continues to maintain silence, as neither trade relations have been cut nor arms sales halted.

In this context, Borrell stated that "there is a clear will to exterminate the Palestinian people, and if Israel is violating human rights -and all indicators suggest this- then any member state like Spain can bring the matter to European courts to activate human rights treaties."

Borrell emphasized that "Gaza has revealed Europe's moral bankruptcy, and it is time to act; this indifference is unacceptable, as treaties are clear about the consequences of violating humanitarian law."

Borrell condemned Europe's inaction regarding the suffering of Palestinians, asserting that the image the continent presents of its moral and humanitarian values does not reflect reality, especially after several European leaders openly declared their support for Israel.

Borrell pointed fingers at European leadership, saying, "The generation of German politicians born after World War II and still in power is burdened by a guilt complex regarding Germany's historical role in the Holocaust, and they believe that being right always means protecting Israel."

He added that the historical legacy of the Holocaust "which extends to countries like Austria and Slovakia paralyzes the European stance, with only a few member states supporting Israel unconditionally."

The article's author noted that Europe faces a similar moral dilemma in Ukraine, where the continent's historical fear of the Russian nuclear threat has delayed military assistance to Kyiv and exacerbated the war.

Borrell concluded -according to the article- that the 27 member states must resort to using European courts as a tool to stop Israel's violations in Gaza, affirming that the time has come to act to end the political and moral stalemate in Europe.
