The World Health Organization has issued an urgent warning about the humanitarian situation in the besieged Gaza Strip, confirming that the region needs 600 trucks daily loaded with food and medical aid to combat the widespread famine. This warning comes at a time when only 10 to 30 trucks are currently entering, highlighting the significant gap between actual needs and available aid.
During a media briefing, WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier explained that opening all crossings and borders for vital aid is essential. A famine has been declared in Gaza after meeting all established international criteria and protocols, underscoring the severity of the humanitarian situation.
Lindmeier described the situation as 'tragic and hard to describe,' noting that famine is not just a lack of food, but means that people are dying due to weakened bodies and exposure to diseases. The necessary protocol for declaring a famine has been completed, indicating that the catastrophic situation has persisted for a long time.
Lindmeier clarified that the international classification of famine includes five stages, and the Gaza Strip has reached the fifth and final stage in the northern region and Khan Younis. He also pointed out that this stage may soon extend to other areas such as Deir al-Balah, increasing concerns about the spread of famine.
In the final stage of famine, individuals become weak and frail, and children suffer from continuous crying due to hunger. Even if food is introduced, the body cannot absorb it without complex medical intervention, increasing the risk of death.
Lindmeier acknowledged that this classification came much too late, noting that the time has long passed since the beginning of the siege for many mothers and children. He emphasized that famine means bodies are exposed to diseases and infections, and wounds do not heal in the natural way.
He also warned of the horrific aspects of malnutrition, stating that dying of hunger is the worst, especially when a person reaches an advanced stage of weakness. He affirmed that only political will can end this tragic situation.
Lindmeier noted that the declaration of famine has raised concerns among many politicians worldwide, and he observed a sharp response from Israeli authorities. Many governments have begun to exert the necessary pressure following the awakening of global public opinion.
Lindmeier confirmed that allowing the required amount of supplies to enter would help reopen bakeries and food markets, thus eliminating the flourishing black market. However, he warned that aid may arrive too late for some, especially those who have reached an advanced stage of weakness.
The United Nations and international experts have officially declared a famine outbreak in the Gaza Strip, marking the first time famine has been declared in the Middle East. International organizations have confirmed that more than half a million people in Gaza are trapped in famine.
It is noteworthy that the occupying state began starving the residents of Gaza after its coup against the ceasefire agreement, restricting the entry of aid, which led to the martyrdom of more than two thousand Palestinians and the injury of 15 thousand others.
Famine is not just hunger; it means that people are dying because the body becomes weak and is exposed to diseases.
