European Council President Antonio Costa strongly urged the Israeli government to reconsider its decision to take control of the city of Gaza. This came in a post he made on the platform (X), where he expressed his deep concern over the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the sector.
Costa pointed out that this operation, along with the ongoing illegal expansion of settlements in the West Bank, the widespread destruction in Gaza, the blockade of humanitarian aid, and the spread of famine, not only violates the agreement with the European Union but also undermines the fundamental principles of international law.
The European official warned that this decision would have consequences for the relations between the European Union and the occupying state, which the council will evaluate. This warning reflects the extent of European concern over the escalating tensions in the region.
Costa noted that the situation in Gaza remains tragic, and that the Israeli government's decision will only exacerbate the humanitarian conditions. He emphasized the need for immediate steps to improve the living conditions of the population.
Costa stressed that the two-state solution remains the only sustainable and long-term solution for peace and security in Israel and the region. These statements come at a sensitive time as international pressure on the occupying state increases to reverse its aggressive policies.
Israel's control over Gaza will undermine the fundamental principles of international law and universal values.
