In the wake of popular anger.. Reports of the evacuation of embassy staff from the occupation in Greece
The evacuation of Israeli embassy staff in Athens came as a result of widespread popular protests against the Israeli occupation in Greece.
Israeli media reported that the occupation authorities proceeded to evacuate their embassy staff in Athens due to the escalating anti-occupation protests in the Greek capital. The newspaper "Israel Hayom" stated that the evacuation process came after massive popular demonstrations against Israelis, where protesters expressed their rejection of the Israeli aggression on Gaza and their support for the Palestinians.
In a related context, the Greek left movement announced the organization of a march to the Gaza Strip on August 10, in a clear escalation of the Greek people's stance against the Israeli massacres, although no additional details about the march were provided. A statement from the movement indicated that the Greek people would not remain silent in the face of what it described as "the genocide being committed by Israel with the support of the West and the Greek government in Gaza."
Earlier, the Greek Communist Party condemned the statements of the Israeli ambassador in Athens, Naom Katz, who expressed concern over Palestinian slogans written on the walls of the capital, considering them disgraceful remarks, pointing out that the Greek government has become the main defender of Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people, under the pretext of a strategic alliance with Tel Aviv.
In response to the Israeli ambassador's criticisms, the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, rejected interference in the city's internal affairs, affirming that the Municipality of Athens does not accept lessons in democracy from those who kill civilians and children in Gaza daily. He clarified that most of the pro-Palestinian graffiti has been removed, but he emphasized that the Israeli occupation is committing unprecedented genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza, which is provoking the discontent of Greek society.
Since the onset of the Israeli aggression on Gaza on October 7, 2023, Athens and other Greek cities have witnessed widespread demonstrations in support of the Palestinians, during which protesters raised slogans condemning the aggression and demanding an end to the massacres against civilians. Protesters also organized protests against the cruise ship "Crown Iris," which docked at some Greek islands carrying hundreds of Israeli tourists, in a sign of popular anger at the Greek government's complicity with the occupation.
Amid the escalating Israeli aggression on Gaza, Palestinian statistics confirm that the aggression has resulted in more than 210,000 martyrs and injured, the majority of whom are women and children, in addition to more than 9,000 missing under the rubble, and hundreds of thousands of displaced persons, amidst worsening famine that has claimed the lives of dozens, including a large number of children, in a tragic humanitarian scene that reflects the scale of the humanitarian disaster facing the Palestinian people.
