The President of Ireland Calls on Guterres to Activate Chapter Seven Against Israel

Irish President Michael Higgins has called on United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to activate Chapter Seven of the United Nations Charter against Israel, in light of the crimes committed in Gaza by the Israeli occupation, which include genocide, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement.

In statements made to local "RTE" radio, Higgins emphasized that the United Nations must take decisive action, saying: "I believe that the Secretary-General of the United Nations should use the procedures outlined in the United Nations Charter, utilizing Chapter Seven," which pertains to the maintenance of international peace and security and grants the Security Council the authority to take strict measures against those who threaten or violate peace.

The Irish president added that the right to take action remains valid even if there is a veto by Security Council members, noting that the Secretary-General has the right to seek to form an international defense for the Palestinian people, despite international objections.

He pointed out that 6,000 aid trucks have been prevented from entering Gaza, despite being sufficient for three months, stating: "This is a terrible situation," expressing his dismay at the tragic scene experienced by the Palestinian people, where children are starving, and women are suffering from dehydration while trying to feed their children, calling for urgent action to save the situation.

In a related context, the government media office in Gaza announced that Israel has allowed only 674 aid trucks to enter since July 27, which is about 14 percent of the daily minimum required for the sector, estimated at around 600 trucks, amid the ongoing blockade and restrictions on the entry of aid.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel, with the support of the United States, has been committing genocide in Gaza, including killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement, ignoring international calls and orders from the International Court of Justice to stop these crimes. These operations have resulted in the martyrdom of more than 210,000 Palestinians, including many children and women, and injured tens of thousands, in addition to over 9,000 missing persons, hundreds of thousands of displaced individuals, and famine that has claimed many lives.
