American Coercive Diplomacy Undermines Trust in Allies and Raises International Concerns

U.S. President Donald Trump has relied on a diplomatic style based on coercion and economic pressure, issuing executive orders on July 31 to impose tariffs on dozens of countries, which took effect on August 8, including neighboring and friendly nations, as well as poor countries suffering from complex economic crises.

Trump's policy is not limited to imposing tariffs; it extends to interfering in the internal affairs of countries, including judicial proceedings and foreign policies, using tariffs as a weapon to intimidate and threaten nations that do not comply with his demands, jeopardizing ally relationships and undermining trust in international commitments.

Despite Trump's promises to negotiate and force countries to sign trade agreements in favor of the United States, he has only signed agreements with seven allied countries and the European Union, while raising tariffs on about 70 countries by rates ranging from 10% to 50%, imposing sanctions on allies such as Canada, India, and Brazil.

Trump imposed high tariffs on Canadian imports, reaching 35%, on India 25%, and on Brazil 50%, which observers considered a mix of politics and economics, using economic power as a means of political pressure, especially with his threat to disrupt the balance in relations with Canada after the latter announced its intention to recognize the Palestinian state at the United Nations.

Trump also threatened Brazil, the second-largest economy in South America, with increased tariffs on its goods, including coffee and oil, if it did not stop the trial of former president Bolsonaro, who faces charges related to an attempted coup, reflecting an unprecedented escalation in international relations.

In a related context, Trump raised tariffs on Indian imports by 25%, criticized its relations with Russia, described the Indian economy as "dead," and attacked the Russian S-400 deal, leading to a deterioration of trust among allies and threats of retaliation from India, Canada, and Brazil, which announced its intention to respond in kind.

Additionally, Trump imposed tariffs on key allies such as the European Union, Japan, South Korea, and even Israel, which is considered a close ally, raising widespread concern among allies, especially amid tensions with Gulf countries, which fear Trump's unpredictable policies, particularly after the Aramco attack in 2019.

In a recent study, experts confirmed that American retrenchment policy threatens the security of the Gulf region, calling for the establishment of a collective Gulf security alliance to deter threats, amid deteriorating trust among allies, with the American newspaper "Financial Times" describing Trump's actions as a destruction of global allies, reflecting a loss of trust and international respect.
