The European Union announced on Thursday that "Israel has agreed to take concrete steps to improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip," following decisions issued by the Israeli government and "constructive" dialogue between the European and Israeli sides.
"Today we reached an agreement with Israel to expand humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip," EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaya Kallas said in a post on the X platform. She added that the agreement includes "opening more crossings, allowing aid and food trucks into Gaza, repairing vital infrastructure, and ensuring the protection of aid workers."
She concluded by saying, "We are counting on Israel to implement every clause that has been agreed upon."
A statement issued by the European Union stated that the measures agreed upon with Israel include a significant increase in the number of daily trucks carrying food and non-food supplies into Gaza, the opening of additional crossings in the north and south, and the reactivation of aid routes from Jordan and Egypt.
We included enabling food distribution through bakeries and public kitchens in the Strip, resuming fuel supplies for use in humanitarian facilities until they reach a sufficient level of operation, while protecting relief workers, and repairing vital infrastructure, including resuming electricity supplies to the desalination plant.
The European Union said in a statement that these measures will be implemented in the coming days, in line with the "common understanding" that aid must reach the population directly, "while ensuring that it is not diverted to Hamas."
The European Union indicated its readiness to coordinate with all relevant humanitarian actors, including UN agencies and NGOs, to ensure the rapid implementation of these steps.
The statement concluded by renewing the call for an immediate ceasefire and the release of all prisoners, stressing its support for the mediation efforts of Egypt, Qatar, and the United States.
