Guterres calls for allowing humanitarian aid to reach Gaza

UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for urgent and unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza and the release of hostages held by Hamas.

He said in a statement, "At this difficult moment, as we stand on the brink of abyss in the Middle East, it is my duty as Secretary-General of the United Nations to make two strong humanitarian appeals."

"For Hamas, the hostages must be released immediately and without conditions; and for Israel, urgent and unimpeded access must be allowed for humanitarian supplies and relief workers for civilians in Gaza," Guterres continued.

The Secretary-General emphasized that "both of these goals are important in themselves. They should not be a bargaining chip."

He explained that the United Nations has available stocks of food, water, non-food items, medical supplies and fuel, located in Egypt, Jordan, the West Bank and Israel. These materials can be sent within hours.

To ensure their delivery, UN staff and partners on the ground must be able to get these supplies into and around Gaza safely and without hindrance to get them to those in need, Guterres said.

Ghoneim: Israel’s allegations of suppling water to Gaza Strip is “slanderous and untrue.”

The head of the Palestinian Water Authority, Mazen Ghoneim, denied reports that Israel was supplying the Gaza Strip with water, considering that what was said about that was “slander and untrue.”

Ghoneim said in a phone call with Xinhua News Agency, "Even if Israel pumps water, the Palestinian Water Authority will not be able to supply it to the residents due to the power outage required to pump it into taps and water pumps."

Ghoneim said in a press statement that the remaining water sources in the Gaza Strip “are not enough to provide 15 liters per person, which is the minimum recommended by the World Health Organization for survival.”

Ghoneim added that the continued disruption of water supply systems in the Gaza Strip threatens the lives of residents, calling on the international community to assume its responsibilities in providing urgent protection to the Water Authority’s technical crews so that they can operate the facilities and secure water for citizens.

The Palestinian official's statements come in response to Israeli Energy Minister Yisrael Katz, who stated today that Israel will restore water supplies to parts of the southern Gaza Strip in accordance with an agreement with US President Joe Biden.

Katz spoke in a tweet on the ((X) website) today about a decision to open water to the southern Gaza Strip according to an agreement between Netanyahu and Biden.

The Israeli minister said that this decision "will push civilians to the south of the Gaza Strip, and contribute to tightening the comprehensive siege on Gaza in terms of electricity, water and fuel."

Katz, who holds the position of a member of the Mini Security Political Council in the Israeli government, added that this step would contribute to eliminating Hamas, saying, "It will make it easier for the Israeli army to work and eliminate Hamas' infrastructure."

Israel has imposed a comprehensive siege on Gaza, which includes closing all crossings and cutting off electrical, water, food and energy supplies to the Strip since the Hamas movement launched a massive and unprecedented attack on southern Israel on the 7th of this month.

In response, Israel launched Operation Iron Swords against Hamas, and the Israeli army continues its military attacks on various areas in the Gaza Strip, killing 2,670 Palestinians and wounding 9,600 others.

Palestinian and relief sources deny information on opening Rafah crossing

Palestinian and relief sources denied that they had been informed by the Egyptian authorities of the decision to operate the Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip, or to start a truce with the Israeli side in the south of the Strip.

Salama Maarouf, head of the government media office in Gaza, said in a statement: “We have not received, until this moment, any communications or confirmations from the relevant authorities on the Egyptian side about the intention to open the Rafah crossing today, and everything that is being circulated in particular is attributed to (Israeli) media.”

Two sources, one a high-ranking Palestinian and the other a relief source, reported that they had not yet been informed of the decision to operate the Rafah crossing or start a truce, calling for waiting until an official position arrived from the Egyptian side.

The private Egyptian news channel Cairo, which is close to the authorities, had previously reported from "Israeli media" that there was a ceasefire in southern Gaza as of 9 am today (local time), while Arab press reports reported news of the start of a truce and the start of operation of the crossing.

Neither the Egyptian nor the Palestinian side issued any official positions regarding the news being circulated about the opening of the crossing.

American police said that a man from Illinois stabbed a Muslim child 26 times, killing him, while seriously wounding his mother, while chanting anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian statements.

The police accused the 71-year-old man of committing a hate crime against the 6-year-old child and his 32-year-old mother, saying that the two victims were targeted because of their Islamic faith.

The Will County Sheriff said in a statement posted on social media, “Investigators were able to determine that both victims in this brutal attack were targeted by the suspect because of their Muslim status and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.”

Biden appoints a special envoy for humanitarian issues in the Middle East

The administration of US President Joe Biden on Sunday appointed former US Ambassador David Satterfield to Lebanon as a special envoy for humanitarian issues in the Middle East. According to the statement, “Satterfield will lead a whole-of-government campaign to mitigate the humanitarian consequences of Hamas’ terrorist attack against Israel, and support the critical efforts of the United States Agency for International Development and the Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. His role depends on the United States’ long-term commitment to supporting peace and stability in the region.” .

“Satterfield has many decades of diplomatic experience and working amid some of the world’s most challenging conflicts will be instrumental in our ongoing efforts to meet urgent humanitarian needs. His regional experience spans forty years including assignments in Syria, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia and two tours in Lebanon,” the statement said.

Satterfield served as Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Director for Arab and Arab-Israeli Affairs at the State Department, and Director for Near Eastern Affairs on the National Security Council staff from 1993 to 1996, where he worked primarily on the Arab-Israeli peace process.

US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, confirmed on Sunday that he was confident that humanitarian aid would cross from Egypt to Gaza, according to what American media reported.

Blinken told reporters during his visit to Cairo that the “Rafah crossing will open,” noting that the United States is developing a mechanism with the United Nations, Egypt, and Israel to deliver aid to those who need it.

US Secretary of State: The Rafah crossing will be open

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken promised on Sunday that the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt “will be open” after his meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

Blinken said that the Rafah crossing will be open. He added: "We are working with the United Nations, Egypt, Israel and others to establish a mechanism through which assistance can be introduced and delivered to the people who need it."

Israel closed its border crossings with Gaza and imposed a “total siege” on the Strip, preventing supplies of fuel, electricity and water. This left the Rafah crossing as the only practical outlet for getting people out of the Strip - and getting supplies in.

Officials from several countries participated in the talks about when and to what extent the crossing could be opened.

Blinken also announced US President Joe Biden's appointment of David Satterfield, the former US ambassador to Turkey, to help coordinate aid efforts. Blinken said that Satterfield will be in Israel on Monday to begin coordination.

Blinken, who met with several regional leaders including those of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, said he had "very good conversations" with both Sisi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

He added that every country he spoke with shared the US administration's goal of preventing escalation and securing aid for civilians trapped in Gaza.

Hanegbi: We misjudged Hamas and denied reports that Egyptian officials warned Israel

The head of the Israeli National Security Council (Tzachi Hanegbi) admitted his mistake when he said that the Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip was “deterred,” stressing that his country “received a severe blow.”

Just six days before the surprise attack launched by Hamas and other Palestinian factions, Hanegbi said, “Hamas is very deterred, and is aware of the consequences of further challenge.”

But in a press conference on Saturday evening, Hanegbi said, “This is my mistake, and it reflects the error of all evaluation factors over many years, and more so in the recent period, when we believed that Hamas had learned the lesson of Guardian of the Walls (an operation launched by Israel on Gaza in May 2021). At that time, it received a decisive blow.

He added, "Hamas's deterrence was also evident in the three military operations carried out by the Israeli army against Islamic Jihad."

He continued, “In Operation Shield and Arrow (May 9-13, 2013), we dealt a decisive blow to Islamic Jihad, which appealed to Hamas to intervene to save it, but Hamas decided not to enter the battle.”

“This was one of the reasons that made the Israelis believe that Hamas was afraid of entering into a confrontation,” Hanegbi said.

He went on to stress, “The State of Israel was subjected to a severe blow last Saturday (October 7).”

Hanegbi denied reports that Egyptian officials had warned his country of an upcoming Hamas attack from Gaza, saying, “Personally, the answer is no.”

“I did not receive such a warning,” he added. Systematically, the Egyptians did not communicate with any of the people they communicate with, neither the prime minister nor those close to me and the head of the Mossad. It is fake news that not only we denied, but the Egyptians also denied.”

Regarding the issue of Israeli prisoners in the Gaza Strip, Hanegbi said, “We are all committed to their return, as is the entire government.” However, he denied that there were negotiations in this regard to date.

Hamas was able to capture an undeclared number of Israelis during its attack on the settlements surrounding the Gaza Strip, with the start of Operation “Al-Aqsa Flood” on October 7.

On Monday, Hamas announced that it would not negotiate a prisoner exchange under fire, according to a televised speech by the military spokesman for the “Al-Qassam Brigades,” the movement’s military wing.

Reports expect Europe to be affected by Gaza war

As for Germany, it also affirmed its solidarity with Israel, as the German government announced on October 12 that it “banned the activities of the Hamas movement and temporarily halted development aid to the Palestinian territories.” German prosecutors also opened an investigation after Berlin confirmed the presence of German citizens among the “hostages held by Hamas,” according to the same source.

Israeli army awaits a "political decision" to launch ground attack on Gaza

Israel continues its preparations to carry out a ground invasion in Gaza after extending the deadline it granted the Palestinians to evacuate the area. Meanwhile, the Israeli army confirmed that it was awaiting a "political decision" regarding the timing of the major attack on the Gaza Strip. US Blinken in Egypt to discuss Gaza crisis ahead of planned return to Israel

According to the US Department of State spokesperson, Matthew Miller, who spoke to reporters upon Blinken's arrival in Cairo, "The Secretary of State will be returning to Israel on Monday for further discussions with Israeli leaders."

Blinken started his Middle East tour on Thursday, visiting Israel, Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia before he headed to Egypt, which has been communicating with both the Israeli and Palestinian sides to end the conflict.

US President Joe Biden said on Saturday that the US is working with Egypt, Israel, Jordan, and the UN to ease humanitarian consequences in Gaza and create the proper conditions for aid flow.

For the ninth day in a row, the Israeli army has rained air and artillery strikes on the Gaza Strip, home to 2.3 million Palestinians, killing hundreds of Palestinian civilians and displacing hundreds of thousands more.

The Israeli attacks come in retaliation for a surprise cross-border attack launched by Hamas on Saturday, 7 October, in which it killed over 1,300 Israelis and took dozens more hostage.

In the past week, Egypt has called for ending Israeli bombardments in Gaza, protecting civilians and ensuring humanitarian aid access.

Egypt's National Security Council, chaired by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, also convened on Sunday to review military escalation in the Gaza Strip, firmly rejecting the Israeli displacement policy of Palestinians.

Egypt is coordinating efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people in Gaza, with aircraft from various countries arriving at Sinai's El-Arish Airport for delivery to Gaza through the Rafah border crossing.

However, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry noted in an interview with CNN on Saturday that the Israeli bombardments on the Palestinian side of the Rafah border crossing have rendered it inoperable.

US says Israel has restored water supply to Gaza

The US lawmaker clarified that Israel has not committed to letting in electricity and fuel supplies into Gaza, which they say are not covered by the same rules under laws of armed conflict.

Jordan's FM accused international community of following "double standards" towards Palestinians

Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Sunday accused the international community of showing "double standards" towards Palestinians, as Israeli bombardment of the besieged Gaza Strip continues relentlessly.

"Why is blocking access to food and medicine for civilians considered a war crime in Ukraine but not in Gaza?" Safadi asked in an interview with the BBC, according to a statement by the country's Foreign Ministry.

"The international community should condemn the killing of Palestinian civilians just as it does for Israeli civilians."

Safadi said the humanitarian and legal criteria should be "consistent" without discrimination.

He warned of a risk of the current conflict spreading to other regions, and highlighted its devastating impact on women, children, the elderly, and innocent civilians.

The foreign minister said a "just peace" based on a two-state solution is the key to ensuring the security of Palestine, Israel, and the entire region.

Last weekend, Israeli forces launched a sustained military push against the Gaza Strip in response to a military offensive by Hamas in Israeli territories.

The conflict began when Hamas initiated Operation Al-Aqsa Flood against Israel – a multi-pronged surprise attack including a barrage of rocket launches and infiltrations into Israel via land, sea, and air.

Hamas said the operation was in retaliation for the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem and Israeli settlers’ growing violence against Palestinians.

The Israeli military then launched Operation Swords of Iron against Hamas targets within the Gaza Strip.

Israel's response has extended into cutting water and electricity supplies to Gaza, further worsening living conditions in an area that has endured a crippling siege since 2007, as well as ordering more than 1 million Gazans in the northern strip to evacuate to the southern strip.

Wang Yi told US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that China condemns violations of international law and opposes harming civilians, said a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement.

“The military option is not a way out in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, (as) responding to violence with violence will only create a ‘vicious cycle’,” he told Blinken.

Establishing a cease-fire between the parties and preventing a humanitarian disaster by reducing tensions is the most important priority, he added.

Stressing that channels for humanitarian aid should be opened, a compromise within a UN framework should be supported, and the Security Council should fulfill its role, Wang said the main way to solve the problem is implementation of the two-state solution, the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, and the peaceful coexistence of Israel and Palestine.

“There will be no peace in the Middle East without reconciliation between Israel and Arab countries,” he said.

The top Chinese diplomat reiterated his country's call for an international peace conference for comprehensive reconciliation.

Saying that major countries should follow a fair and objective attitude in international and regional crises, act with calmness and restraint, and lead in adherence to international law, Wang added: "China will continue to encourage peace talks. The US should also play a constructive role and bring a political solution back on track as soon as possible."

Blinken also stated that his country supports a two-state solution to the problem and a UN role in reducing tensions and providing humanitarian aid, adding that the US is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with China, said the ministry statement.

The conversation followed an announcement by Beijing that it is sending an envoy to the Mideast region this week to seek a path to peace.

Israel threatens to bomb Kuwait Hospital in Rafah

Today, Sunday, the Israeli occupation threatened to bomb the Kuwaiti Hospital in the center of Rafah, demanding its evacuation.

According to local sources, hospital administrations refuse to evacuate, because inside the hospital there are large numbers of wounded and injured, some of whom are in critical and dangerous conditions, and on artificial respiration. If the hospital is evacuated, these cases become at risk of death, so the Kuwaiti hospital administration chose to remain among the sick, wounded and injured. To let him go.

It is noteworthy that the Israeli war machine has been threatening for two days to evacuate a number of hospital directors in the Gaza Strip, via letters and direct communications, while hospital directors refuse to deal with these communications and messages.

These threats come in light of the catastrophic health and humanitarian conditions that the Gaza Strip is experiencing, as the entire health system is on the verge of collapse due to power outages, and the occupation’s failure to allow electricity, water and fuel to be delivered to the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the aggression nine days ago, while thousands of wounded are piled up in the corridors of hospitals and health centers that have no capacity. It stops for a moment to receive the wounded of the aggression.

Foreign Ministry: Israel commits a humanitarian catastrophe against Palestinian people

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned the occupation's devastating aggression against our people in the Gaza Strip, which included all aspects of citizens' lives through bombing and destruction, killing and displacement, and the destruction of infrastructure and institutions of all kinds, most notably hospitals.

The Foreign Ministry confirmed in a statement today, Sunday, that this Israeli aggression has plunged the Palestinian citizens of the Gaza Strip into a real and unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe that has affected the minimum necessities of human life, including depriving citizens of their basic needs, as stipulated in the Geneva Conventions and humanitarian law. International and international human rights law.

The Foreign Ministry said in its statement: The occupation authorities continue their procedures and practices in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and kidnapping it completely, by imposing a stifling military cordon on it, dismembering it, and intensifying military barriers and closures, whether with iron gates, earth mounds, or cement cubes, in a way that perpetuates the system of apartheid. ), paralyzing the movement of defenseless citizens with military orders to completely stop and freeze their lives.

The Foreign Ministry pointed to the support provided by the occupation authorities to the settlers to commit more violations, crimes, and provocative orgies against Palestinian citizens, which leads to depriving them of movement between cities and governorates to meet their most basic humanitarian needs, most importantly their need for security, work, education, and freedom of movement to reach their sources of livelihood, olives, hospitals, and health centers.

Three options for Israel in Gaza

The American newspaper "The Wall Street Journal" pointed out that Israel is preparing to invade the Gaza Strip with the clear aim of destroying the ability of the "Hamas" movement to rule, but it has not developed any clear strategy regarding the stage after the ground invasion.

Israel spoke of an imminent massive attack, and sent tanks, snipers, artillery units, and tens of thousands of troops to the borders of the Gaza Strip, demanding that civilians living in the northern part of the Strip, an area with a population of 1.1 million people, leave for their safety.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant said on Friday, after his meeting with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in Tel Aviv: “We will destroy Hamas’ rule, eliminate its military capabilities, and get rid of this threat on our borders.”

But Israeli leaders still have to answer another important question: What's next for Hamas?

Jacob Nagel, who served as National Security Advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and is in contact with government officials, said: “The most important thing is to act and put an end to the problem. After that we decide what to do,” noting that what happened over the weekend changed all the rules of the game. .

One American official pointed out that there have been no significant discussions so far with Israeli officials regarding the aftermath of the invasion. This is the dilemma that faced US leaders after the September 11 attack in 2001, when the attack launched by Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan paved the way for Washington to invade Iraq. The official said that Israel must think about the consequences and not rush into war without an exit strategy, adding: “Israel has no plan... If Hamas is destroyed, who will replace it?”

In fact, Israel has fought four wars in the Gaza Strip with Hamas since the movement took control of the Strip in 2007, but this time will be different. Israel responded to the attacks with military campaigns aimed at deterring Hamas and weakening its ability to carry out future strikes. Israeli officials referred to this strategy as “mowing the lawn,” a way of reducing the problem without addressing the underlying issues. Israeli leaders from all political viewpoints adopted this approach, due to the absence of alternatives.

But the sudden movement process led to changing this model. Today, Israel is preparing for its largest-ever military campaign in Gaza, a campaign aimed at decisively ending Hamas' rule.

If Israel is able to overthrow Hamas, the first option may be to send its forces to reoccupy the Gaza Strip, as it did until 2005, but it does not wish to send military forces again to impose military rule on the Gaza Strip. Nagel said: “We do not want to rule Gaza, that is for sure.”

The second option, which is gaining popularity, is to try to crush the movement, then exit Gaza, and let the Palestinians and their supporters know what will happen next. This option poses a set of challenges, which may pave the way for more extremist forces to fill the power vacuum.

The third option is for Israel to pave the way for the return of the US-backed Palestinian Authority, which rules the West Bank.
