Liz Terrace confronts Parliament and struggles to stay in office

London - (AFP) British Prime Minister Liz Terrace , whose popularity has fallen more than ever, faces MPs for the first time since the humiliating reversal of her economic programme, which is a test for this conservative official who wants to keep her job at all costs.

This is only her third session of her weekly questioning before Parliament but it is about her political continuity, in these oral responses that she feels less comfortable with than her predecessor Boris Johnson.

Terrace's authority declined a lot after it was rejected by public opinion and criticized from within the majority after only six weeks in power.
After unfunded tax cuts, it is the prospect of a below-inflationary pension revision that is sparking outrage and making headlines in the British press.

With inflation accelerating to 10.1 percent in September, the highest level in 40 years, "a revolt is being prepared among the Tories," according to the Daily Telegraph. For its part, the "Times" newspaper also touched on this "rebellion", considering at the time that such an unpopular decision is unlikely.

New Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt was keen on reassuring Wednesday morning, saying, "This government prioritizes the most vulnerable groups with achieving economic stability and the direction towards long-term growth that everyone desires," commenting on inflation reaching a new peak.

In an effort to calm the economic and political storm, the 47-year-old prime minister has had to almost completely reverse the deep tax cuts she promised during the campaign this summer, and Hunt has warned that public spending must be spared.

Markets seemed reassured, and the International Monetary Fund welcomed a return to “fiscal discipline” at a time when recession looms. But many fear a return to austerity, as happened during the 2008 financial crisis, which led to drastic cuts in public budgets and high unemployment rates.

The impeachment session in Parliament at 11:00 GMT will be the first in which Liz Terrace has spoken since her interview with the BBC on Monday evening, in which she expressed her "regret" for her "mistakes" while at the same time expressing her determination to stay in power. Authority.

But is there still time to hope to fix the situation? An opinion poll conducted by YouGov showed that out of ten Britons has a favorable opinion of Terrace, and one in five among conservative base voters. Fifty-five percent of the party members considered that Liz Terrace should resign, while only 38% expressed their desire for her to remain in her post.

The crisis dates back to the presentation of the "mini-budget" at the end of September by its then Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarting, which includes large tax cuts and strong support for energy bills, which raised fears of a decline in public accounts.

The pound sterling fell to its lowest levels and long-term government borrowing rates rose. The Bank of England was forced to intervene to prevent the situation from deteriorating into a financial crisis.

Jeremy Hunt, who was hastily appointed Friday as chancellor of the exchequer, reversed almost all of the tax cuts made by his predecessor, giving the impression that power was now in his hands, not the head of government.

Silent Terrace attended the presentation of this humiliating retraction in Parliament presented by Hunt. She appointed another minister, Penny Mordaunt, to represent her in order to explain the move to the opposition.

Two years before the next parliamentary elections, the Labor opposition is leading the Conservatives in opinion polls.

Five deputies from the Trass party urged the prime minister to leave. Because of the lack of a clear successor figure, the Conservatives seem reluctant to go through a new and long appointment process as they seek to agree on a name, but they are not close to achieving that.

"I really don't think starting a new campaign to get rid of another prime minister will convince the British that we think of them and not ourselves, nor will it convince the markets to remain calm," British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly told Sky News on Wednesday morning.

Bold tactics kept the protest movement going in Iran

NICOSIA (AFP) - Flash protests in small groups, pictures projected onto the walls of apartment blocks, fountains whose waters are dyed red: Iranian youth, with whatever means they have at their disposal, have adopted various tactics to keep the flames of the demonstrations protesting the death of Mahsa Amini alive.

The protest movement has proven resilient for more than a month since its eruption, despite a crackdown by security forces that has claimed the lives of at least 122 people.

The protests erupted in response to the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after she was arrested by Tehran's morality police on the grounds of not adhering to the Islamic Republic's strict dress code.

Women led the movement and even took off their headscarves, set them on fire and marched chanting "Women, Life, Freedom" and "Death to the Dictator", movements and slogans that were repeated around the world.

Despite the restrictions on the internet and the blocking of access to popular applications such as Instagram and WhatsApp, the young people still managed to produce videos depicting their protests.

Video footage, in what looks like a game of chase, showed drivers honking their horns in support of the demonstrators and blocking roads with cars to slow the security forces down.

Street traffic was also obstructed by tipping over and setting rubbish bins on fire, and in some cases overturned police cars.

Security forces responded by riding motorcycles to pass and were seen removing license plates to later identify and arrest the drivers.

Police on motorbikes have also been seen firing shotguns, tear gas or even paintballs at protesters to track them down.

- 'Great courage' -

The youths, in turn, resorted to masking, switching their phones to "airplane mode" to avoid being located, and carrying extra clothes to replace the paint-stained ones.

In a video clip circulating on social media, protesters are seen removing a surveillance camera over a road in the city of Sanandaj in Kurdistan Province, Mahsa Amini's hometown.

Others are seen in other footage organizing more small, snappy rallies away from the city squares that are usually used for political rallies.

“It takes a lot of courage to take to the streets when the security forces know everyone,” Shadi Sadr, the London-based director of the Justice for Iran Association, wrote on Twitter. “The uprising continues but we are seeing fewer videos due to the strict restrictions on the internet.”

Pictures of women cutting their hair during the protests spread as an expression of grief that has turned into a symbol of resistance drawn from Persian folklore.

Those who were afraid to take to the streets resorted to other, more discreet ways of participating. Two weeks ago, a form of protest emerged, in which the waters of fountains in Tehran turned blood-red after being dyed red by artists to reflect the deadly oppression.

In a similar vein, art students at a university in Tehran filmed a video showing their hands raised in the air and covered in red paint. On the same day, activists from the Adalah Ali group hacked a live news broadcast of state television and superimposed an image of a target and flames over the image of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Pictures circulating on the Internet this week showed an effigy of a cleric hanging from a bridge in Tehran.
In a video taken at night, Amini's face was projected onto the wall of a residential tower in Tehran's Ekbatan neighborhood, as protesters chanted from windows or rooftops.

- Unstable balance -

Schoolgirls even moved with their backs to the camera and removed their headscarves before raising their middle fingers at pictures of Khamenei in the classroom.

Independent researcher Mark Peroz said his analysis of visual evidence on social media showed that the peak of the protests was on September 21 and that participation decreased during the current month.

But he told AFP that while the protests "have peaks and troughs, there is still a level of sustainability that we did not see in previous periods of protest" such as the 2019 demonstrations that erupted due to a sudden rise in fuel prices.

Henri Rommy, an Iran specialist at The Washington Institute, said he expected the protests to continue for some time. "The better their ability to organize and coordinate, the greater the chance of expanding their support base and posing a clear challenge to the regime in the short term," he told AFP.

"But the state security apparatus excels precisely at disrupting this kind of organized dissent, thanks to an elaborate toolkit of violence, arrests, internet disruption, and intimidation," he added. Hence, "at the moment, the state and the protesters are in a state of precarious equilibrium, with which it cannot Neither of them was able to overcome the challenge posed by the other, which indicates that the protest movement and the current violence may continue for a long time.

Extension of the United Nations mission in Mali for one year without French air support

United Nations (United States) - (AFP) - The UN Security Council decided to extend the mission of the United Nations peace mission in Mali for a year without French air support, as in the past, which may prompt European countries to leave this international force, which consists of about 15 thousand soldiers and police.

It is a "risk," said a diplomat, who asked not to be named, hinting at the survival of Germany and Britain in this operation, which was launched in 2013 and is now the mission that has suffered the largest number of casualties among peacekeepers.

On Wednesday evening, the Security Council adopted a resolution drafted by France to extend the mission's mission until June 30, 2023, by 13 votes out of 15, with Russia and China abstaining.

Moscow made it clear that it had abstained from the vote due to "interfering formulas" in the text on human rights with financial sovereignty.

The resolution provides for maintaining the current workforce - 13,289 soldiers and 1,920 policemen - and calls on peacekeepers to support the implementation of the peace agreement signed in 2015, a political transition, the return of state authority in the center of the country and the protection of civilians and human rights.

The text requires the UN Secretary-General to submit a report by January in order to adapt the mission's format and study the evolution of its relations with the ruling military group.

And Bamako confirmed in early June that it was out of the question to allow Paris, while the French army was withdrawing from Mali, to continue operating on its territory with its aircraft stationed in Chad. Mali refuses to leave the foreign forces through the door, only to return through the window, as Malian Foreign Minister Abdallah Diop said in the Security Council at the time.

The finance minister told media on Monday that any French air support for the peacekeeping force was a "red line". After announcing this position, Paris crossed out every phrase related to maintaining French air support from the first text.

In a confidential report presented to the Security Council, United Nations experts in charge of sanctions against the jihadist organizations of Al Qaeda and the Islamic State warned of their development in the Sahel region after the French withdrawal from Mali.

In this document obtained by Agence France-Presse, they said that "the ongoing military reconfiguration in the region may harm efforts to combat terrorism."

The resolution adopted by the Council includes only a small reference in its introduction to the controversial presence of mercenaries from the private Russian Wagner Company, which Bamako denies, stressing that it only accepts assistance from those who are "trained" under an old bilateral agreement with Moscow.
In its resolution, the UN Security Council condemns "the use of mercenaries and violations of international humanitarian law and human rights violations they commit," without mentioning the name of the force as Washington and London want, according to a diplomatic source.

The decision maintains the mandate to protect human rights, which the financial authorities, with the support of Moscow and Beijing, sought to reduce.

In the text, he wrote, peacekeepers must "monitor, document, carry out fact-finding missions, assist in the investigation and provide public and quarterly reports to the Security Council on violations of international humanitarian law and violations and abuses of human rights."

On Monday, Abdallah Diop expressed his regret over the "excessive focus on human rights with a very heavy machinery" accompanied by "a large number of reports."

In recent months, NGOs have accused the Malian forces and their Russian backers, including Wagner mercenaries, of committing atrocities.

Diplomats said that the United Nations mission, which is obligated to open investigations in the event of allegations, has witnessed a decrease in its freedom of movement significantly since the beginning of the year.

After the vote, the French ambassador to the United Nations, Nicolas de Rivière, stated, "The freedom of movement of the United Nations mission must be guaranteed," stressing that "violations of human rights and international humanitarian law must stop."

It is assumed that a United Nations report will be published soon on the massacre of hundreds of civilians at the hands of Malian soldiers with the help of foreign fighters between 27 and 31 March in Mora (center) - where the UN mission was denied entry.

Seoul proposes a large plan of aid to Pyongyang in exchange for its denuclearization

Seoul, (AFP) - South Korean President Yun Sok Yul announced Monday that he would offer a large aid package to Pyongyang in exchange for its denuclearization, an offer North Korea has long rejected.

Seoul's proposal comes days after Pyongyang threatened to "eliminate" the South Korean authorities against the background of the recent outbreak of the Corona virus in the North, and less than a month after leader Kim Jong Un declared that his country was "ready to mobilize" its nuclear capabilities in any war with the United States and the South. .

South Korean President Yoon, who has previously described denuclearization as "essential" to achieving lasting peace on the peninsula, detailed Monday a large-scale aid plan that includes food and energy as well as help to modernize infrastructure such as ports, airports and hospitals.

"The bold initiative I envisage will greatly improve North Korea's economy and the livelihood of its people in stages if the North stops developing its nuclear program and embarks on an honest and steady process of denuclearization," Yoon said in a speech marking the anniversary of liberation from Japanese colonial rule in 1945. .

Analysts in the region say the chances of Pyongyang accepting a similar offer - first floated during Yoon's inauguration speech - are slim, because North Korea, which invests a large portion of its gross domestic product in its weapons program, has long made clear it will not enter into a deal. like this.

Washington and Seoul have repeatedly warned in recent months that North Korea is preparing for another nuclear test, which will be the seventh in its history.

Kim Jong Un's regime conducted a record number of weapons tests this year, including an intercontinental ballistic missile, for the first time since 2017.

Poland confirms the ban on entry of Israeli school groups accompanied by armed guards

Warsaw - (AFP) - Poland has prevented Israeli school groups from hiring armed guards to accompany them during visits to the country, including to former Nazi concentration camps.

"We are ready to receive Israeli flights in Poland if they are not accompanied by armed security guards," the Polish News Agency (PAB) quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Lukasz Jasina as saying on Tuesday.

Jasina's comments came after Israeli Ambassador Yaakov Levin announced last week that visits to Israeli schools had been banned "due to decisions taken by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs".

It concerns visits organized by the Israeli Ministry of Education for secondary school pupils, which have been suspended since June.

Jasina said, in an interview with a local radio station in Lublin, eastern Poland, that the visits of Israeli students to France and Germany were not accompanied by armed guards, adding that this could leave the impression that they faced a greater danger in Poland than in those countries.

Relations between Poland and Israel have witnessed several disagreements in the past few years, the latest of which was against the background of a new Polish law that was considered to block the claims of Jewish families whose property was confiscated after World War II.

Qatar falls open against Ecuador in Valencia double

Doha - (AFP) - Qatar's national team fell in its first participation in the World Cup finals against its Ecuadorian counterpart, 0-2, on Sunday, at Al-Bayt Stadium, in the opening match of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Ener Valencia scored the two goals in the 16th minute from a penalty kick and 31st in front of 67,372 spectators.

The first group also includes the Netherlands and Senegal, who meet on Monday.

Qatar became the first host country to lose its first match in the history of the World Cup finals, taking an incomplete step at the beginning of its World Cup campaign.

This was the third match in the ranking on the first day of this tournament, but the International Federation of Football Associations decided to advance the start of the tournament by one day last August in order for the host country to play the opening match as usual.

The Ecuadorian team took advantage of a misunderstanding between Qatar goalkeeper Saad Al-Sheeb and one of its defenders, to score Fenerbahçe striker Ener Valencia with a header from close range after only three minutes had passed, but the referee canceled it after referring to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technique for offside.

The referee awarded a penalty kick after the gray Qatar goalkeeper blocked Valencia inside the area, and the latter successfully approached it (16).

It is the first time in the history of the World Cup that the opening goal has been scored from a penalty kick.
And the Ecuadorian national team continued its advantage, possessing the ball by 62 percent, amid a complete loss of the owners of the land.

And Ecuador, which is participating in the finals for the fourth time in its history, succeeded in consolidating its progress, thanks also to Valencia, who invested a cross from Angelo Preciado from the right to head a ball into the net (32).

Valencia thus increased his tally as the best scorer in the history of his country with 37 goals, and he was the only one with the record number of goals for Ecuador in the finals with five goals, after he was equal with Augustin Delgado.

Paradoxically, Valencia managed to score the last five successive goals for her country's national team in the football tournament as well.

Valencia also became the sixth player to score a double in the opening match during this century, after German Miroslav Klose (2006) against Costa Rica, Costa Rican Paulo Winchop in the same match, Brazilian Neymar against Croatia in the 2014 edition, and Russian Denis Cheryshev against Saudi Arabia in the World Cup Russia. 2018.

The Qatari players entered more calmly in the second half and exchanged the ball with ease. And after Al-Sheeb thwarted Romário Ibarra's attempt from the outskirts of the area (53), Qatari back Pedro Miguel hit a header that passed to the right post after a coordinated attack (62).

The Ecuadorian national team suffered a heavy blow, injuring Valencia in the 77th minute.

Muhammad Muntari, who replaced Al-Moez Ali, attempted a dropped ball, but it landed on the net from above (85).

The meeting is the fourth between the two teams. Ecuador won twice, compared to Qatar once, and tied once as well.

Betting on America is a loser by all accounts

Official condemnations of the crime of the occupation in Jenin and the factions confirm that it will not go unanswered

Governorates - "Jerusalem" dot com - On Thursday morning, official and factional bodies condemned the new occupation crime in Jenin , which affected 3 young men in the town of Jaba .

Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh held the Israeli government fully responsible for the mobile crimes that shed the blood of our Palestinian people, and does not give any weight to international resolutions and laws.

Shtayyeh considered that these crimes would not have continued in this horrific manner had it not been for the absence of international accountability for the perpetrators and their sense of impunity.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates considered that the escalating occupation crimes come as an official response to calls for calm in light of the low level of international reactions and double standards.

The ministry held the Israeli government directly responsible for it and its repercussions and risks for exploding the arena of the conflict, blaming it for its attempts to replace the political nature of the conflict with criminal military solutions.

She said: The failure of the international community to provide international protection for our people encourages the occupation to persevere in committing more crimes, and Israel's continued impunity makes it easier for it to continue to abuse our people, which requires the International Criminal Court to break its silence, end its investigations, and issue arrest and arrest warrants against Israeli war criminals.

For its part, the "Hamas" movement mourned the three martyrs, and its spokesman, Hazem Qassem, said, "This blood will be fuel for the escalation of the great uprising in the occupied West Bank."

Qassem added, "The occupation is unable to resolve this battle against our people, so it resorts to committing these massacres against the rebellious youth, and our Palestinian people and their valiant resistance are capable of paying the occupation the price for its crimes, and punishing it for its terror." as he put it.

He continued, "This battle between our people and the occupation will not stop unless our people win and achieve their goals, and our people will inevitably win the battle of wills against the occupation." According to him.

For his part, Tariq Salmi, spokesman for the "Islamic Jihad" movement, said, "The elevation of the martyrs will only increase our people's resistance, steadfastness, and determination to move on the path of freedom," holding the occupation fully responsible for this crime.

He added, "The bill of reckoning with this enemy will not be closed, and its continuous attacks and violations put us before our duties and responsibilities to defend our people whose blood is shed by gangs of murderers and criminals in the occupation government and its army." like he said.

For its part, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine said, "This massacre will not go unnoticed, and the masses of our people, its factions, and its fighting forces will pay the enemy the price for its crimes." According to the expression of the statement.

For its part, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine said, "The response to the murder of the three young men and the massacres of the occupation in Jenin, its camp, Nablus, and others, is through resistance and perpetuating the clash and confrontation with the occupation.

Democracy called on the leadership of the authority to stop working on the Aqaba-Sharm El-Sheikh track and its humiliating understandings, to withdraw from it, to stop the actual work in security coordination, and to speed up the formation of the unified national leadership of the popular resistance.

For his part, the head of the Palestinian National Council, Rawhi Fattouh, said that the execution of three young men by the occupation forces inside their vehicle in the town of Jaba, south of Jenin, this Thursday morning, is a war crime.

Fattouh added, in a press statement, that the Netanyahu government is implementing its bloody program, which it promised to its fans of extremists, criminal settlers and thieves, and waging a war of genocide against the Palestinian people.

Fattouh called for the opening of an international investigation by the International Criminal Court, and for the prime minister of the occupation government and his fascist ministers and army commanders to be brought to the war crimes court.

He strongly criticized the silence of the international community and its contention with weak condemnation statements that do not reflect the magnitude of the tragedy and crimes committed by the occupation and settlers against our people.

The Republic of South Africa condemns the racist Israeli aggression on Jerusalem and Gaza
