In Rafah, in the south of the Strip, the citizen, Eid Salman Abu Rashid, was martyred in an Israeli bombing in the Al -Salam neighborhood, east of Rafah, and a number of martyrs and wounded fell after an Israeli artillery shelling east of Rafah.

An Israeli march plane also targeted the roof of a house in exchange for the government industry in the Tal Sultan neighborhood of Rafah, and the occupation aircraft bombed a house belonging to the Abu Jamous family, west of the city.

The occupation aircraft also targeted the southern areas of Khan Yunis.

In an indisputable toll, the outcome of the continuous Israeli aggression on Gaza by land, sea and air since the seventh of last October, increased to more than 21650 thousand dead, and about 56 thousand injured, in addition to thousands of missing persons, 70% of them children and women.

Netanyahu: Israel Must Control Gaza's Border with Egypt, War to Last Months

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday evening that “Israel must control the Philadelphia border area between the Gaza Strip and Egypt.”

This came in a press conference held by Netanyahu, alone, without Ministers Yoav Galant and Benny Gantz, after they refused to participate in the conference.

Netanyahu added: "The Philadelphia axis must be in our hands and under our control, and any arrangement other than that will not be accepted by Israel."

The "Philadelphia Corridor" is also known as the "Salah al-Din Corridor," which is a 14-kilometre border strip between the Gaza Strip and Egypt.

Regarding the war that Israel continues to wage against the Gaza Strip since last October 7, Netanyahu said: “The war will continue for several months to achieve all its goals.”

He added: "Achieving victory requires more time. We want to ensure that Gaza does not pose any threat."

Netanyahu added: “We incurred heavy costs in Gaza, but the war is at its peak, and we are fighting on all fronts, and we are continuing to fight,” claiming “achievements.”

He stressed that "the Israeli army will continue its raids in various areas of the Gaza Strip, north, south, and in the central region."

Netanyahu claimed that the Israeli army “has so far killed 8,000 Hamas militants.”

Regarding the prisoners, he pointed out that “the Israeli government sees the possibility of moving forward on the issue of the prisoner exchange deal with Hamas.”

Netanyahu touched on Iran and Hezbollah and threatened them if they decided to expand the war, saying: “You will receive blows that no one dreamed of.”

He added: "We are working against Iran all the time, in every place, and in all possible ways. We must prevent it from possessing a nuclear weapon."

Regarding whether he intends to resign from the government, Netanyahu said: “The only thing I wish to resign from is Hamas. I am dealing with that and nothing else.”

Earlier Saturday, the Israeli Broadcasting Authority said that Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Minister in the War Council, Benny Gantz, refused to participate in the press conference that Netanyahu will hold on Saturday evening.

Since the formation of the war council headed by Netanyahu, and including Gallant and Gantz, Hebrew media reported on more than one occasion that there were disagreements between Netanyahu and Gallant on the one hand, and Netanyahu and Gantz on the other hand, regarding the management of the war and the file of Israeli prisoners detained in the Gaza Strip.

"Prisoner's Club": 80 Palestinian prisoners are being tortured and starved in Israel

The Palestinian Prisoners' Club said on Saturday that 80 Palestinian female prisoners in the Israeli Damon Prison "are being subjected to torture, starvation, and harsh detention conditions."

This came in a statement they made about the conditions of the detained women, most of whom were from the Gaza Strip, after a series of visits by lawyers to the prison, during which they met with some of them.

The club said, “The number of female prisoners is 80, the majority of whom are from the Gaza Strip, in addition to female prisoners from the West Bank, including Jerusalem, and female prisoners from the 1948 territories.”

It stated that among the female prisoners were "a pregnant prisoner in her fourth month facing hunger, and the prison administration deliberately brought her burnt, inedible food, and an elderly prisoner, 82 years old, from Gaza, who is subjected to humiliating and humiliating treatment."

It added, "The continuation of torture, abuse, humiliation, and revenge increased the harshness of their detention conditions. Hunger intensified, and the extreme cold exacerbated the tragedy."

The Prisoners' Club stated that the cells of female prisoners "are witnessing great overcrowding, and the majority of them sleep on the floor, and the prison administration does not allow the introduction of blankets."

It added that some of the female prisoners "are still wearing the same clothes they were arrested in, as some of them have been detained for more than a month, and the prison administration refuses to allow them to bring in clothes."

The "Prisoner's Club" pointed out, "isolating the female prisoners of Gaza from the female prisoners of the West Bank and the occupied interior, and preventing them from communicating."

It explained that "female prisoners in Gaza suffer from double torture and humiliating and humiliating treatment, and the prison administration deliberately provides them with undrinkable and dirty water."

The Prisoners' Club says that the majority of the female prisoners who were arrested after the 7th of last October "were subjected to systematic abuse, torture, and humiliation... threats, strip searches, and beatings by female soldiers and female guards."

It pointed out that the female prisoners in Gaza in Damoun prison are “part of other female prisoners detained in (Israeli army) camps, and the occupation refuses to disclose any information about them, or allow legal teams to visit them.”

Regarding the charges against the female prisoners, the club said, “Most of the female prisoners in the West Bank are under administrative detention, or are facing charges related to incitement on social media sites.”

Administrative detention is a detention decision by military order on the grounds of a security threat, without filing an indictment, and it extends to 6 months, which can be extended.

The club called on "all international human rights institutions, led by the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross, to press for the restoration of their true and necessary roles in light of the escalation of crimes against male and female prisoners in the occupation prisons."

As of 18:20 (UTG), the Israeli authorities had not issued a comment on the statement of the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club.

In total, the total number of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons exceeds 7,800, including more than 2,870 administrative detainees, as of the end of November.

UNRWA: The residents of Gaza are hungry and desperate for food

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said on Saturday that the residents of the Gaza Strip are “hungry and desperate for food.”

This came in a blog post published by the Director of UNRWA Affairs in Gaza, Thomas White, on the UN agency’s account via the “X” platform.

White attached a video clip showing the arrival of hundreds of Palestinians to the UNRWA aid convoy in Gaza City this week.

The UN official stressed that "the Gaza Strip is suffering from catastrophic hunger, and 40 percent of the population is at risk of famine."

He added, "Every day in Gaza is a struggle for survival, in search of food and water."

He pointed out that "the residents of the Gaza Strip are hungry and eager to obtain food."

“More regular supplies are needed, which requires safe and sustainable access for humanitarian supplies everywhere, including in northern Gaza,” White concluded.

Hamas: We are open to new proposals regarding a truce and prisoner exchange

Officials in the Palestinian Hamas movement told Al-Sharq TV on Saturday that the movement is showing flexibility towards the new Qatari mediation ideas regarding the exchange of prisoners and a temporary cessation of the Israeli war in the Gaza Strip, in an effort to reach a permanent ceasefire, explaining that it is based on stages of prisoner exchange. and detainees, during which a renewed ceasefire will take place.

The Qatari proposals, based on the Egyptian initiative, stipulate a first phase of the prisoner exchange that includes the release of 40 Israeli detainees, including the elderly, the sick, women and minors, in exchange for the release of 120 Palestinian prisoners of similar categories, in addition to a ceasefire for a period of about a month.

According to officials, after this stage, an exchange of the remaining Israeli prisoners and detainees will take place in exchange for agreed-upon numbers of Palestinian prisoners, accompanied by a ceasefire.

The officials said that the Qatari proposals were derived from the Egyptian initiative.

One of the officials indicated that "the movement is preparing to submit an official written response to the Egyptian initiative that includes the movement's demands."

An informed source reported to Al-Sharq on Thursday that a high-level delegation from the Hamas political bureau will head to Cairo on Friday to inform officials in Egypt of the response of the movement and the Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip to the Egyptian initiative to stop the war.

Hamas was demanding that the prisoner exchange be linked to a complete and comprehensive cessation of the war on Gaza, which Israel rejected.

Gradual cessation of war

Those close to Hamas believe that the movement is aware that Israel is preparing to withdraw from the heart of the Gaza Strip within a period ranging between 2-4 weeks, but it will continue the war in other ways, including direct bombing against the movement’s targets for a long time to come.

The new flexibility in the Palestinian movement’s position is due to its endeavor to achieve a gradual cessation of the war, as a Hamas official said, “It is clear that Israel has begun to prepare to withdraw from the Gaza Strip to its outskirts to continue bombing selected targets, and the movement will respond to that by bombing the targets.” The Israeli military forces on the borders, and in the areas that Israel considers buffer until it withdraws completely and stops the war.”

He added: "Israel failed to achieve its goals of eliminating the military apparatus of Hamas, returning the detainees by force, and ending the movement's rule in the Gaza Strip. It began to work on searching for a major goal with the aim of creating an image of victory," continuing: "We will continue to confront and respond until the occupation army is expelled." Completely stop the war.”

A person close to Hamas pointed out that “the movement tried to force Israel to stop the war by using the detainees card, but it became clear to it that Tel Aviv is ready to sacrifice them in exchange for continuing the war, which many Israeli leaders, led by (Prime Minister) Benjamin Netanyahu, see as opportunity to remain in their positions.

Hamas demands the release of all Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons in exchange for all Israeli prisoners and detainees, which Israel strongly rejects. Those close to Hamas expect that compromise solutions will be reached in this regard.

Egyptian Initiative

The Egyptian initiative in its new form, the details of which Al-Sharq revealed, includes a 10-day humanitarian deal, during which Hamas will release all of its detained civilians, including women, children, and elderly patients, in exchange for Israel releasing an appropriate, agreed-upon number of its Palestinian prisoners.

The second phase includes the release of all female soldiers detained by Hamas in exchange for a number agreed upon by both sides of Palestinian prisoners held inside Israeli prisons, and the handover of all bodies held by both sides since the start of the war on October 7.

During the third and final stage, negotiations will take place for a month regarding Hamas’s release of all its Israeli recruits in exchange for Israel’s release of a number of Palestinian prisoners agreed upon between the two sides inside Israeli prisons.

The war broke out on October 7, when Hamas launched an attack on Israeli towns and villages, during which 1,200 people were killed. Tel Aviv responded with a war on the Gaza Strip that resulted in more than 21,000 casualties, most of them women and children, according to Palestinian health officials.

War on Gaza: Systematic thefts of Gazan homes by the Israeli army

The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Observatory said that the Israeli army unleashed its soldiers in the Gaza Strip to carry out “immoral practices” against Palestinian civilians during raids on their homes, including stealing and looting property.

Yesterday, Friday, the Euro-Med Observatory published on its website a report entitled: “Systematic thefts and looting of the homes of Palestinian civilians from the Israeli army in Gaza.”

In a report, the Observatory documented a series of cases revealing the involvement of Israeli soldiers in systematic thefts of Palestinian funds and belongings, including gold, sums of money, mobile phones, and laptops.

Testimonies collected by the Observatory show that “Israeli army raids go beyond arbitrary arrests, forced disappearances, and field executions, to deliberate sabotage of property, theft of personal belongings, and then the burning of homes.”

The Observatory said that its initial estimates, based on the testimonies it documented, indicate “the theft of personal belongings of Palestinian civilians and extensive looting of valuable possessions carried out by the Israeli army, the proceeds of which may exceed tens of millions of dollars.”

Palestinian Thabet Salim (40 years old) told the Observatory team that the Israeli army forces looted all available money and gold when they arrested him and two of his sons from inside their house in the “Zaytoun” neighborhood, south of Gaza City.

Salim added that he was released alone two days ago, and he does not know anything about the fate of his children.

He stated that "the value of the sums of money the soldiers took from my house exceeds 10,000 US dollars, in addition to an almost identical amount of gold for my wife and the wife of my eldest son," according to the report.

As for Mrs. Umm Muhammad Gharbiyya, a resident of the “Al-Shuja’iya” neighborhood, east of Gaza City, she told the Observatory team that the Israeli army forces forcibly took away her gold jewelry that she was wearing during the raid on their house and the arrest of her husband and her eldest son in mid-December.

The Observatory called for a comprehensive and impartial international investigation into the serious violations against residents of the Gaza Strip and their property by Israeli army forces.

The Guardian: Relations between Russia and Israel are at lowest levels since the Soviet era

When Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone this month with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, their first conversation in weeks, the two leaders found themselves in an unusual dynamic, dealing not as partners but against the backdrop of their countries' historical tensions.

This is how the British newspaper The Guardian began its report on the deterioration of relations between Israel and Russia to their lowest levels since the fall of the Soviet Union.

The newspaper said that evidence of previous friendly relations between Putin and Netanyahu is that the latter used billboards showing him next to Putin during the election campaign in Israel, but the events of last October 7 and Russia’s pro-Palestinian position led to a decisive divergence between them.

The Guardian report quoted Nikolai Kozanov, a former Russian diplomat in Tehran and now an associate professor at Qatar University, as saying that relations between the two countries are at their lowest levels ever since the fall of the Soviet Union.

Different narratives

Dr. Vera Michelin Shapir, of King's College London and a former official at Israel's National Security Council who specializes in Russian foreign affairs, said the divergent accounts published by Israel and Russia after the call on December 10 gave insight into the tense relationship.

Netanyahu said in a statement that he spoke with Putin and expressed his dissatisfaction with the "anti-Israel positions" taken by Moscow's envoys at the United Nations, while expressing "strong rejection" of Russia's "dangerous" cooperation with its ally, Iran.

At the same time, the Kremlin highlighted the “catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip,” with Putin saying that Israel’s military response to the Hamas attack should not lead to “such dire consequences for the civilian population.”

One day before their conversation, Moscow supported the United Nations resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, and said that the United States was “complicit in the brutal massacre committed by Israel,” referring to the martyrdom of more than 21,000 people since the start of the war.

Greater transformation

The Guardian commented that ending the complex agreement between Russia and Israel highlighted the larger global transformation that had occurred, and Kozanov said that the Kremlin’s position on the Middle East had been the same since Putin launched his war in Ukraine, explaining that Russia “quickly realized that relations with the West had been damaged for a long time.” ".

Kozanov added that Moscow, after the start of the war, began looking for ways to strengthen its economic and military relations with Arab countries while also getting closer to Iran, which was providing artillery shells, drones and missiles to Russia.

The report stated that in a rare one-day trip that highlighted his warm relationship with the main players in the Middle East, Putin visited the Emirates and Saudi Arabia earlier this month, where he received a great welcome despite his status in the West as wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of committing war crimes.

Empty noise

The pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia wrote after the trip: “Putin’s visit to the Middle East confirmed that the isolation of Russia that the West talks about is just empty noise.”

Kozanov said the war between Israel and Hamas provided Moscow with a rare opportunity to court the broader Global South, which accused the Western rules-based order of hypocrisy regarding Palestinian martyrs.

In the process, the Kremlin has been keen to claim the moral high ground, despite its devastating record of human rights violations during the wars in Chechnya, Syria, and more recently in Ukraine.

“Putin’s Russia is very pragmatic,” Kozanov said, adding that Moscow felt events in Gaza were pulling the Global South away from the West and could make his positions more sympathetic to Moscow.

Delicate balance

The Guardian said that over two decades under Putin, Russia and Israel sought to achieve a delicate balance. While the two countries have often found themselves on opposite ends of the geopolitical spectrum, Israel has sought to engage with Russia in Syria and has been careful not to antagonize Moscow, given its ties to Iran.

Putin also courted Moscow's large Jewish population and saw Israel as an ally in keeping alive the memory of World War II, the massive historical event around which the Russian leader sought to build his presidency.

Micheline Shabert said that both countries need each other, but the Russian war on Ukraine, which made Putin a pariah in most parts of the West, put Israel in a dilemma.

Disagreement ignites

In the spring of 2022, these tensions first spilled into the public when Russian officials accused Israel of supporting a “neo-Nazi regime” in Kiev. The dispute flared after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov resurfaced an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory in which he claimed that Adolf Hitler “has blood.” Jewish,” comments that Israel described as “disgraceful and intolerable.”

As the Hamas attack occurred, Russian officials and state-controlled media were quick to take a pro-Palestinian stance and cheered Israeli military and intelligence blunders, which were presented as evidence of Western weakness.

The newspaper concludes that the war between Israel and Hamas has already proven to be a victory for Putin by helping to distract the West from the war in Ukraine, where the United States and the European Union are struggling to move forward with two crucial aid packages considered vital to Kiev’s long-term survival.

Israeli Opinion| The reason we collapse from within

Haaretz

Haaretz

Opinion Writer

Carolina Lindsman

“This Israel, which has nuclear weapons and air force fighters, is the strongest in the region. By God, it is weaker than a spider’s web.” This is what Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah said in his famous “Spider’s Web Speech” speech in the year 2000.

In his speech, Nasrallah predicted the collapse of Israel from within, as a result of its societal disintegration. According to Nasrallah, we are a society of conflicting and warring immigrants, lacking the unity necessary to prevail in regional confrontations.

Israelis are spoiled, sensitive to loss of life, and unwilling to fight and sacrifice their lives to protect their national interests.

It is difficult to put our finger on the day Israel's internal collapse began. I think the answer to such a question depends on one's political perspective.

Some will say that the assassination of Rabin and his political approach, the approach of peace, represents this breaking point, while others will say that the signing of the Oslo Accords represents this point. In contrast, others will seek to point to the Six-Day War and the occupation of the territories as a Pyrrhic victory (since “occupation creates corruption,” so Israel is collapsing). There are also those who believe that the year 1948 (and the crimes of the Nakba) is the mother of all sins (the Zionist project is a colonial plundering project, etc.). Whatever the case, the collapse of Israel is closely linked to the Palestinian issue.

Whatever ground we stand on, it is difficult to dispute the fact that Israel, especially since 2018, has been in a state of accelerating internal collapse: the nation-state law, five election cycles in less than four years, the sectarian genie being released from its bottle, the crystallization of the supporting movement.

Netanyahu, the Balfour Street protests [protests in front of the Prime Minister's Residence], the normalization of the Kahanist movement, the strengthening of settler power and the spread of religious Zionism, judicial reforms (or, let's say, a coup against the regime), and the civil struggle against it, the “Brothers in Arms” protest movement [an organization he founded Israeli reserve officers in the context of protests against the “judicial reforms” initiated by the Netanyahu government], threats to reject military orders, the presence of a leadership isolated from its people and leading them towards disaster, and others.

In light of Nasrallah's terrifying prophecy, mentioned above, and in light of our ongoing internal collapse for years, there is something that raises our morale, and it lies in the fighting spirit and sacrifice shown by our fighters and officers in Gaza. Here we see Israelis ready to fight and not spoiled. It is also easy to identify with the general need to highlight unity in our ranks, and to recognize the effort made to raise the fighting spirit. All of this is achieved not only as a response to Nasrallah's speech, but rather as a healthy instinct.

It has become clear to everyone that the dismantling of society has weakened us, and that our strength lies in our unity.

From this point, anger emerges against everyone who dares to pose obstacles to our unity, or who doubts the inevitability of our victory. The problem here is that, in order to achieve victory, we must talk about the day after the war, and we must calculate our calculations for that day. We urgently need a leader who believes he is able to articulate a vision for that day, and we urgently need a government capable of agreeing on that day. While we do not, in fact, have any of these needs. The only use of the word “together” appears conditionally in the slogan “Together We Win” [the slogan raised by the Israeli government in this war], but we are not originally together to agree on the cause for which we will fight, or to set a political goal for the army, because contradictions eat away at us. To the bone.

This, in fact, is the source of our internal collapse. It is our weakness that apparently led to the outbreak of this war. This weakness is represented by the inability of Israeli society to formulate a common vision of the Palestinian issue. Well, we are indeed "fighting together," but how do we win, if we don't know what victory looks like?

China calls on the international community to push for a ceasefire in Gaza

A Chinese envoy called on the international community to push for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Geng Shuang, China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said that more than 80 days have passed since the outbreak of this round of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which plunged more than two million innocent people in Gaza into an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.

This is despite the fact that the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council have respectively adopted a number of resolutions, which strongly call for a ceasefire, an end to the collective punishment of innocent people in Gaza, and compliance by the occupying power with international law and international humanitarian law, he said.

He told the Security Council that the international community must do its utmost to push for a ceasefire, mitigate the severity of the disaster, and save lives.

He warned that prolonging the war would only lead to more casualties on both sides, exacerbate obstacles to the delivery of humanitarian aid, and undermine the prospects for reaching a political settlement.

Geng pointed out that there is no safe place in Gaza and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, who have been repeatedly forced to move, have nowhere else to go.

He stated, "China urges Israel to immediately stop its indiscriminate military attacks and collective punishment of the residents of Gaza, and to provide the necessary conditions for humanitarian agencies to carry out their work in providing aid in Gaza."

He said that the current humanitarian situation in Gaza is extremely dangerous, as life-saving supplies are running out, the medical system is paralyzed, the social system is on the verge of collapse, tens of thousands of pregnant women are at risk of extreme hunger, and newborn babies are deprived of nutrition due to malnutrition. Their mothers.

China calls on all parties to effectively and fully implement Security Council Resolution 2720, which seeks to strengthen the provision of humanitarian assistance in Gaza. China looks forward to early establishing a mechanism to ensure the safe and unimpeded entry of sufficient humanitarian supplies into Gaza.

He pointed out that the essence of the long-standing Palestinian-Israeli issue lies in the failure to implement the two-state solution and the failure to guarantee the basic rights of the Palestinian people.

Geng said that China calls for holding a broader and more effective international peace conference, in order to accelerate the formation of a timetable on the road map necessary to implement the two-state solution, adding that China supports granting Palestine full membership in the United Nations and also supports the early resumption of direct negotiations between Palestine and Israel.

UN warns of the intensification of the spread of infectious diseases in Gaza

The United Nations warned today (Saturday) of the intensification of the spread of infectious diseases in the Gaza Strip, at a time when it warned of the continued weakness of humanitarian aid entering the Strip.

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement, a copy of which was received by Xinhua News Agency, that the spread of diseases in Gaza has intensified, especially due to the recent mass displacement operations throughout the south of the Strip and the need for some families to move several times.

Ocha continued that this situation increases pressure on the already overburdened Palestinian health system, which is struggling to meet the enormous needs of the population at a time when the majority of hospitals are out of service.

The statement quoted the World Health Organization office in the Palestinian territories as saying that people living in shelters in Gaza are still suffering from the disease.

He explained that nearly 180,000 people suffer from upper respiratory infections, and there are 136,400 cases of diarrhea (half of them among children under the age of five), 55,400 cases of scabies, 5,330 cases of chicken pox, 42,700 cases of skin rashes, and 126 cases of meningitis.

The statement pointed out that 1.9 million people in Gaza, or approximately 85% of the population, have become internally displaced, adding that the lack of food and basic materials for survival and poor hygiene exacerbate the already difficult living conditions of internally displaced people, and increase protection and mental health problems. The spread of disease.

It is estimated that at least 100,000 internally displaced persons have arrived in recent days in the city of Rafah, located in the far south of the Gaza Strip, following the intensification of Israel's attacks on the central and southern Gaza Strip.

On the other hand, the UN office said that due to the major security incidents that occurred in the vicinity of the Kerem Shalom crossing since it was partially reopened on December 17, humanitarian aid through the crossing was suspended during the past four days.

He added that 81 trucks loaded with food and medicine entered Gaza yesterday (Friday) through the Rafah crossing with Egypt, at a time when the volume of aid is still completely insufficient.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) announced that Israeli forces opened fire yesterday on an aid convoy returning from northern Gaza while it was taking a route designated by the Israeli army, damaging one vehicle.

The World Food Program warned a few days ago that the Gaza Strip is facing the fifth stage of acute food insecurity (the catastrophic threshold) and that the risk of famine is increasing daily amid intensified conflict and restricted humanitarian access.

UN Chief expresses his deep concern about the escalation of tensions in the Middle East

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his deep concern about the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip.

“With the escalation of hostilities between Israel, Hamas and other groups in Gaza, the Secretary-General remains deeply concerned about the expansion of this conflict, which could have serious consequences for the entire region,” said Stephane Dujarric, Guterres’ spokesman.

The UN Secretary-General stressed the continued risk of a broader regional conflagration, warning that the longer the conflict in Gaza continues, the greater the risk of escalation and miscalculation by multiple actors.

He described the escalation of violence in the occupied West Bank, including intensified operations by Israeli security forces, large numbers of deaths, settler violence, and attacks on Israelis by Palestinians, as “deeply disturbing.”

Guterres warned that "the daily exchange of fire across the Blue Line threatens to cause a broader escalation between Israel and Lebanon and affects regional stability."

Furthermore, the Secretary-General expressed growing concern about the spillover effects of ongoing attacks by armed groups in Iraq and Syria, as well as Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea, which have escalated in recent days.

In the face of these disturbing developments, Guterres urged all parties concerned to exercise maximum restraint and take urgent steps to calm tensions in the region.

He also called on all members of the international community to use their influence to prevent further escalation of the situation.

"The Secretary-General reiterates his call for an immediate ceasefire on humanitarian grounds in Gaza and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages," Dujarric said.

Jewish Historian Ilan Pappe: We are now witnessing the beginning of the end of the Zionist project

The anti-Zionist Jewish historian, Professor Ilan Pappe, said in an exclusive interview with "Arabi 21", "There are current indicators that indicate that we are at the beginning of the end of the Zionist project, although it is difficult to predict when this project will collapse and when it will end specifically."

He explained that “the events that preceded last October 7 showed that there is a civil war within the Jewish community between secular and religious Jews, with no common ground that can be agreed upon,” stressing that “there is a false illusion that because of the Hamas operation unity has returned, but the matter is “Not so; it will continue to tear apart Israeli society from within.”

Pappe pointed out that he was very disappointed by the decision of the French publishing house Fayard a few days ago to withdraw his book “Ethnic Cleansing in Palestine,” considering it “part of an attempt to silence the debate about Palestine by the Zionist lobby,” and he said: “But fortunately, "We have found a new publisher, and these efforts to silence us are doomed to fail."

He stressed that withdrawing his book, which is considered one of the important works that dealt with the Israeli occupation in Palestine, “is a violation of freedom of expression, not only in France, but in many Western countries that pride themselves on being democratic. When it comes to supporting Palestine, this freedom is not respected.”

Since last November 7, the French publishing house Fayard decided to withdraw Pappe’s book, which it published in 2008, and libraries and specialized websites can no longer order the works of the Jewish historian, with a note saying that the aforementioned book has been permanently suspended from marketing.

Fayard claimed that the reason was formal, and attributed the issue to the expiration of the contract with the author on February 27, 2022, so it officially suspended the contract on November 3 of last year, which Pappe denied for the first time in his special interview with “Arabi 21.”

The Jewish historian revealed that he was subjected to other restrictions as a result of his anti-Zionist stances, continuing: “From time to time, there is pressure on my university to expel me, and in some places in Europe my lectures are cancelled, but this will not affect my activity for Palestine.”

Ilan Pappe is a professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences and International Studies at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, director of the European Center for Palestine Studies at the same university, and co-director of the Exeter Center for Ethnic and Political Studies. He left teaching at the University of Haifa in 2006. Because of his views and intellectual and political positions, he belongs to the trend of new historians who rewrote Israeli history and the history of Zionism, and he has many books in this regard.

Here is the text of the special interview with “Arabi 21”:

The French publishing house Fayard recently withdrew your book “Ethnic Cleansing in Palestine,” which is considered one of the important works that dealt with the Israeli occupation in Palestine. How did you receive that step? Why did the house do this?

I was very disappointed by the French publisher's decision. I consider it part of an attempt to silence the debate about Palestine by the Zionist lobby. But fortunately, we found a new publisher, and these efforts to silence us are doomed to fail.

But Fayard said that it resorted to this because the contract with you had expired. What is your comment?

I very much doubt that is the reason. The timing is very clear, and this is happening at a time when France supports the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.

Is there any action you have taken in response to what the prestigious Fayard House did?

No, because they have the legal right to do so. So, it is up to public opinion to judge this behavior.

Does what happened reveal the truth about the “freedom of expression” that France and the Western countries that support Israel talk about?

Of course, this is a violation of freedom of expression. But, she says, not only in France, but in many Western countries that pride themselves on being democracies; When it comes to supporting Palestine, this freedom is not respected.

Fortunately, unlike governments, NGOs are not afraid to show full support for the Palestinians and their struggle.

Are you subjected to any other restrictions as a result of your anti-Zionist positions? Are you affected by these restrictions or not?

Yes, from time to time there is pressure on my university to expel me, and in some places in Europe my lectures are cancelled, but this will not affect my activism for Palestine.

To what extent does the idea of religious selection and “God’s chosen people” justify the heinous crimes committed by the Israeli occupation forces?

This idea is important to a certain group in Zionism, namely the national religious groups. More secular Jews are less motivated by this idea, but the power of national religious Jews has increased dramatically in recent years, so this idea now influences Israeli politics.

To what extent has Israel's image been damaged in world public opinion in the wake of its recent aggression against Gaza?

As I mentioned, civil societies, even before the events in Gaza, were more and more pro-Palestinian. The events of the last two months have made it more determined to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle.

This has not yet affected Western governments, but we hope that over time, the associations will influence government policies.

Is there a complete Jewish rally around the world behind Israel in the wake of the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation that broke out on October 7 last year?

Many Jews around the world, especially the younger generation, are not Zionists. Therefore, Israel cannot rely on the world's Jewish communities to provide it with automatic and unconditional support. I am happy to see the large number of young Jews who reject Zionism. This moral Jewish position will help in our struggle against "anti-Semitism" and against Zionism at the same time.

In fact, in many places Israel relies more heavily on right-wing parties and Christian Zionists.

Does Israel distort the image of Jews or insult the Jewish religion?

Israel has complicated life for Jews around the world. It equates Zionism, which many people believe is a racist and colonial ideology, with Judaism. It is also important to remember that Israel is the most dangerous place for Jews; It is the only place where Jews were killed in large numbers. There is, of course, anti-Semitism, especially in the West, but there are alternative ways to fight it, the best of which is to fight racism of any kind in every country.

How much influence do anti-Zionist Jews have on Israeli society?

There is only a small group of anti-Zionist Jews within Israel, and so their influence is very limited. There are many anti-Zionist Jews around the world, and they play a very important role in the Palestinian solidarity movement.

Is Israel a state of “all Jews” or a state of “all Zionists”?

I think the answer is clear. It is the state of the Zionist Jews, but not all Zionists; There are many Christian Zionists.

What are the roots and causes of Israeli extremism, both religious and ideological?

The source of extremism is the nature of Zionist thought. It became a settler colonial ideology in the 1920s, meaning that it viewed the indigenous people of Palestine as foreigners and a major obstacle to the creation of a European Jewish state in the middle of the Arab world. All settler colonial movements operate under the logic of excluding the native as the only way available to them to build a new state in a foreign country.

Is "Zionism" a secular or religious idea?

Zionism began as a secular movement. In fact, it wanted to secularize and modernize the Jewish people. But it used religion as a justification for colonizing Palestine, hoping that Jews and Christians would be convinced to support it.

In recent years, Zionism has become more religious, and I said before that religious Zionists now have more influence than ever before.

In your estimate, when and how will “Zionism” end? What is the future of the anti-Zionist axis?

It is difficult to predict when the Zionist project will collapse and when it will end specifically, but it can be said that there are indications that we are at the beginning of the end of that project. It seems that the only cement holding society together is hatred of Palestinians. As the events leading up to October 7 demonstrated, there is a civil war within the Jewish community between secular and religious Jews with no common ground on which to agree; It has proven that the rift within the Jewish community cannot be bridged. The only common basis is war and conflict, while you cannot maintain such a state forever.

There is a false illusion that because of the Hamas operation unity has been restored, but this is not the case, as it will continue to tear Israeli society apart from within.

There is also an increasing rejection of Zionist thought in global civil society, which will ultimately affect the policies of countries, especially since people have begun to view Zionism as an illegitimate regime, and this idea has become widespread among world public opinion, and this will inevitably have implications for the future of the conflict. Israeli-Palestinian.

The younger Palestinian generation will provide a more consensual and clearer direction to the fragmented Palestinian national movement.

There is also a clear development in the United States of America, which would lead to a greater desire not to get American involved in the Middle East

It is still possible that future democratic transformation in the Arab world will lead to more positive Arab support for Palestine, which means more commitment to Palestine.

Civil society around the world will begin to influence policies that will make Israel a pariah state.

Could Israel enter into a “white coup” against Zionism in light of the possibility of its demographics changing in the future?

I fear that there will be no change from within the Jewish community, even if the demographic balance changes. This will only come through effective pressure from abroad in the form of sanctions, and from the region.

How will the Israeli war on Gaza end, in your opinion?

It's hard to say. It appears that it will take longer than the Israelis imagined to defeat Hamas militarily, and that Hamas will fight to the last man. So this could be a long time.

Once this happens - if it happens - Israel will annex part of the Gaza Strip to Israel, and try to persuade the Egyptians to receive refugees, or other countries, and if that does not succeed, it will leave them inside a smaller strip, and they will try to convince a multinational force to take charge, and try to build a kind of Of autonomy there, without Hamas.

Will they succeed in all this? I'm very skeptical. But much depends on whether war breaks out in northern Israel on the border with Lebanon, and what will happen in the West Bank and inside Israel? How will the world react to all these challenges?

Orthodox Rabbi: Israel is the most dangerous place for Jews in this world and its establishment is a “betrayal of God”

The anti-Zionist Orthodox rabbi, Elhanan Beck, revealed that Israel “failed to provide security for the Jews” to the point that it became the “most dangerous” place for them, noting that Muslims have throughout history saved Jews who were persecuted in different parts of the world, and that liberating Palestine is a must “from the sea to the river.”

Beck, who is considered one of the most prominent clerics in Britain, said in an interview with Anadolu: “Travel around the world and in the end you will see that the most dangerous place for a Jew today is Israel.”

He added that he has lived in Britain for 36 years, and concluded that Jews “live in peace and security all over the world, even in Muslim countries.”

He continued: “Jews live in peace outside Israel, not only in the West, but in the Islamic world as well.”

Beck, a member of the Jewish anti-Zionist movement “Neturei Karta” (Guardians of the City), pointed out that the latter “completely contradicts the Jewish faith, and that Orthodox Jews have always been against Zionism and the establishment of Israel.”

Orthodox Jews are known as conservatives who strictly adhere to Jewish law.

In this context, Beck described Zionism as a “betrayal of God,” indicating that the establishment of Israel in general is a “betrayal of God and will ultimately fail.”

He asked: “How many countries were founded during the past 75 years?” Have you noticed that all the countries that were founded live in peace? But the only place in the world where there is no peace for a single day is Israel.”

Rabbi Beck stressed that Orthodox Jews “stand against Israel and wait for its demise.”

** Muslims gave us an ideal place to live

Speaking to Anadolu, the Orthodox rabbi pointed to the role that Muslims played throughout history in the lives of the Jewish people, and said: “We were persecuted in many parts of the world, and Muslims throughout history saved us. They gave us a perfect place to live.”

He believed that “the Zionists always try to claim that Muslims want to exterminate all Jews and throw them into the sea,” considering these allegations as “nonsense.”

He explained: “Anyone who knows a little about history knows that the Jews lived a wonderful life in Islamic countries. As Jews, we have been persecuted in most parts of the world, and Muslims have always saved us from that persecution.”

Accordingly, Rabbi Beck denied the accusations of anti-Semitism against Muslims.

He added: “Despite 75 years since Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories, Jews still live in peace in the Islamic world,” referring to Jewish communities in “Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Iran, Turkey, and Yemen, and Palestine.”

**I do not consider Netanyahu a “Jew”

In addition to his position on Zionism and the founding of Israel, Beck criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his role in the “genocide” committed by Tel Aviv in Gaza.

He said that he does not consider Netanyahu a “Jew,” describing him as “the prime minister of the people who rebelled against God,” as he put it.

He continued: “I cannot bear to see someone who can legitimize genocide, or commit it.”

He stated that Netanyahu “was trying to portray himself as secular, by violating the daily sanctities of the Jewish faith.”

He explained that during Netanyahu’s recent visit to Britain, “He (Netanyahu) ate in a restaurant that served foods and drinks forbidden according to the Jewish (faith).”

** Corbyn is a good friend of the Jews

As such, Beck explained that anti-Semitism “has ceased to be a threat to the Jewish people since the end of the Holocaust,” while simultaneously questioning claims that “Israel is working to save the Jewish people from the threat of anti-Semitism.”

He said that any politician who used language against the Jews “had his political career ended,” and gave an example of this to the former leader of the British Labor Party, Jeremy Corbyn, as “the Zionists branded him as anti-Semitic, and his political career was ended.”

He added: “Corbyn has no problem with Jews, but he only opposes Israel’s occupation of Palestine. Look what they did to him. I know him personally, and he is a good friend of the Jewish people.”

Beck considered that “Zionism has contributed greatly to anti-Semitism,” pointing out that the Israeli attacks on Gaza are “a true tool of genocide.”

** The conflict did not start on October 7

Speaking about the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation carried out by the Hamas movement against the settlements surrounding Gaza on October 7, Beck stressed to Anadolu that the conflict in Palestine “did not begin with a Hamas attack.”

Since last October 7, the Israeli army has been waging a devastating war on Gaza, which as of Friday left “21,507 martyrs and 55,915 injured, most of them children and women,” massive destruction of infrastructure and an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, according to the Gaza Strip authorities and the United Nations.

Beck pointed out that the conflict “began on May 15, 1948,” indicating that for the Palestinians, “it began with the Nakba, where the Palestinians were subjected to murders and genocide.”

He stressed that what happened on October 7 was a “result” of Israeli policy, calling on world leaders to “open their eyes to understand that helping Israel is not in the interest of the Jewish people.”

Rabbi Beck pointed out that killing and occupation cannot justify “waging another genocidal war.”

He criticized Western countries, saying: “We understand that they want to help Israel because they want to help the Jewish people, and they feel guilty about what happened in World War II, where more than 6 million Jews were killed.” But what they are doing now is completely wrong.”

** Liberating Palestine “from the river to the sea”

Rabbi Beck highlighted that according to Orthodox Jewish faith “Jews are not allowed to rule even an inch of land” (referring to Palestine).

He indicated in his interview with Anatolia that his sect “does not support the two-state solution, because it believes in the necessity of the disappearance of the State of Israel, and the liberation of Palestine from the river to the sea, and that its problem lies with the occupation and the occupiers,” as he put it.

“From the River to the Sea” is a political slogan supporting the Palestinian cause and the liberation of the occupied territories, and refers to the geographical area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.

In this context, Beck stressed that his sect’s position on the establishment of Israel “does not mean killing or deporting Jews, but rather they can continue their lives normally, as is the case with Jews in other Islamic countries.”

Hebrew Channel 12: Netanyahu's government is working to remove UNRWA from Gaza

The Israeli government is working to remove the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) from the Gaza Strip, according to Israeli media reports.

Israeli Channel 12 reported that the “top-secret” Foreign Ministry report includes recommendations that this step take place in 3 stages, “the first is to reveal in a comprehensive report the alleged cooperation between UNRWA and Hamas,” the second stage “includes reducing UNRWA operations in the Gaza Strip, And searching for different organizations to provide education and social care services to the Palestinians in Gaza.”

The third stage will be "the process of transferring all UNRWA's functions to the body that will govern Gaza after the end of the war."

A report by Israeli Channel 12 indicated that the plan will be presented to the Israeli Cabinet “in the near future.”

Last week, the United Nations appointed Dutch Sigrid Kaag as coordinator to supervise humanitarian relief shipments to Gaza, as part of a resolution taken by the UN Security Council with the aim of increasing humanitarian aid.

The United Nations said in a statement that Kaag will be the Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs and Reconstruction in Gaza and will begin her work on January 8. In this role, she will work to facilitate, coordinate, monitor and verify humanitarian relief shipments to Gaza. She will also establish a mechanism to accelerate the arrival of aid to Gaza through Countries not involved in the conflict.

On Friday, the Israeli army opened fire on one of the UNRWA aid convoys in the Gaza Strip, according to what the agency’s director in Gaza, Thomas White, announced.

In this context, Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of UNRWA, said in response to the Israeli allegations that accuse the organization of helping Hamas and transferring some humanitarian aid directly to it, that Israel “created a stream of misleading and baseless information,” and stressed that “even after the opening of the Karm crossing Abu Salem, the Israeli authorities restricted humanitarian access to Gaza through bombing and disrupting communications and Internet networks for long periods.

UNRWA announced earlier that 142 of its employees were killed as a result of the war in the Gaza Strip.

British newspaper: An endless war suits Netanyahu, even if he gets what he wants In Gaza, this may be the beginning of a comprehensive war...!

Commentator in the Guardian newspaper, Simon Teasdale, discussed the positions of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding calls to reduce the level of tension in Gaza, saying that the Israeli leader loves endless wars, and that is why he continues to talk about an increasing escalation in the current war.

This situation serves his personal agenda in terms of maintaining support for his extremist alliance and strengthening his position.

Tisdale said that warnings about a widespread war sweeping the entire Middle East have been circulating since the first perilous days after October 7. The most important and dangerous hotspot is Israel's northern border with Lebanon, where violent confrontations took place in recent days between Hezbollah and the Israeli army, and were accompanied by sporadic Israeli raids on Syria, strikes on American military bases in Iraq, and a retaliatory response as ordered by President Joe Biden. On Tuesday, all of which are examples that feed the narrative of a large-scale war. The marches and missiles launched by the Houthis in the Red Sea increased the state of panic in the region.

However, predictions of a large-scale war have not yet been fulfilled for two main reasons. The first is that the war government led by Netanyahu, after the October 7 attacks, was thinking of launching two successive attacks against Hamas and Hezbollah, but the United States convinced it not to. The thinking of Israeli officials in October was that destroying Hamas was a priority.

The second reason stems from the calculations of hard-liners in Iran, who believed that their interests required not getting involved in the war. Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Iraqi and Yemeni groups are all proxy groups that arm, finance, train, and obtain, despite Iranian denials, directives from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. All of them are not Iranian and are the ones doing the fighting. In this way, Iran is waging an indirect war against Israel, with a degree of denial. The immediate problem is that the strength of these two factors, which call for self-control, is weakening.

In clearer terms, as the war enters its fourth month, both sides are taking the gloves off. This explains the intervention of French President Emmanuel Macron, who responded with horror to the calls of the United Nations General Assembly for the necessity of an immediate ceasefire, and explains the increasing British, German and American calls to reduce tension or a short halt and contain the chaos in Gaza. The motivation came from fears stemming from the continuing killing of more than 21,000 Palestinians in Gaza, and the United Nations warning of a humanitarian catastrophe.

But the leaders of the West, who are supposedly powerless to stop the war, know that the relentless killing spree, the criminal indiscriminate killing and the self-defeat of the Israeli army in Gaza, has become an intolerable provocation from Israel's enemies. What motivates them is the specter of a broader regional explosion, not images of Palestinian children mutilated by Israeli bombing.

The writer says that the Israeli assassination this week of one of the prominent Iranian Revolutionary Guard commanders, Sayyed Reza Mousavi, with an air strike on Damascus, was a clear violation of all the red lines that Israel and Iran adhered to to avoid a direct clash. Mousavi was a “big fish” whose mission was to coordinate with Hezbollah and the Syrian regime. Iran pledged revenge and made Israel pay a heavy price, but the killing carried another message.

According to Haaretz newspaper commentator Amos Harel, “Moussavi’s death was seen in the region as an Israeli signal to Iran that it cannot continue to enjoy immunity while continuing to promote and finance terrorism against Israel and at the hands of its agents.” “This brings us closer to escalation with Hezbollah and even Iran on the northern border.”

Benny Gantz, a prominent member of the Israeli war cabinet, threatened that Israel was running out of patience with Hezbollah, and hinted that it might invade Lebanon if the situation did not improve.

But restraint and non-interference in proxy wars may not go so far. Iran may face a problem in controlling the proxy groups that it supports. The Houthi group, for example, did not care about America’s announcement of the establishment of an international group for tasks related to its leadership, and naval attacks increased. The Houthis launched 50 marches and missiles towards Israel.

At the same time, Israel is talking about a war on several fronts, a claim that indicates escalation. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant told the Knesset that Israel faces seven fronts: Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Iran. He said that Israel is responding on all these fronts.

Among these fronts, the Blue Line separating Lebanon and Israel is the most tense and is approaching the brink of all-out war, according to many in Israel. Haaretz newspaper quoted a minister in Netanyahu’s government as saying: “There is an increasing number of people who have come to accept the idea of war with Hezbollah and that there is no turning away from it.”

There is another reason for concern that escalation has become a real danger. The desperate, distrustful and cornered Prime Minister may welcome a permanent state of war on all fronts. For him, an all-out war would be an existential threat that would silence critics, strengthen the cohesion of his coalition and postpone calls for urgent elections.

More than this, a large-scale war in which Israel confronts Iranian proxies may be an opportunity for Netanyahu to achieve his long-standing dream, which is a direct clash with Tehran, his arch enemy, a fateful ambition he has long sought and almost convinced Donald Trump of.

In short, a war without end means Netanyahu's survival, at a time when the complainants lose, and if he gets what he wants in Gaza, this may be the beginning of a comprehensive war.

The American Wall Street Journal said that the war on the Gaza Strip generated destruction comparable to the most destructive campaign in modern history, confirming that Israel dropped 29,000 bombs that destroyed approximately 70% of the homes in the Strip.

The newspaper added that the Israeli bombing completely destroyed or damaged half of the buildings in the Strip, in addition to the bombing of Byzantine churches, historic mosques, factories, shopping centers, luxury hotels, theaters and schools.

It stressed that the bombing, which targeted the water, electricity, communications, and health care infrastructure, made them all beyond repair.

It also said that the occupation destroyed olive groves, citrus trees, and greenhouses.

War on Gaza: Israeli army continues to bomb various areas in the Gaza Strip, leaving dozens of dead and wounded

The Israeli air, land and sea bombardment continues in various parts of the Gaza Strip for the 85th day of the aggression, leaving dozens of killed and wounded, amid a worsening humanitarian catastrophe.

Dozens of citizens were killed, and others were injured, in an occupation artillery shelling on a group of residents on Jaffa Street, east of Gaza.

The Israeli warplanes bombed a house in the Nuseirat camp in the central Gaza Strip, leaving a number of wounded.

East of the Rafah crossing in the southern Gaza Strip witnessed violent artillery shelling, while the occupation warboats fired heavy shells at the beaches of the central and southern Gaza Strip.

The Israeli artillery continues to fire its artillery shells east of the Bureij camp in the middle of the Gaza Strip, which has been witnessing intense bombardment by air and land for four days, resulting in injuries and forcing citizens to flee towards Deir al-Balah.

The Israeli tanks also fired several shells in the middle of the Jabalia camp in the north of the Gaza Strip, while warplanes launched a series of violent raids on the city of Khan Yunis in the south, which led to the death of a citizen and the injury of another, as a result of the bombing of a house for the Al-Aqqad family, southeast of Khan Yunis.

The World Health Organization has expressed its deep concern about the increasing risk of the spread of infectious diseases in the Gaza Strip, due to the continued massive displacement of people along the southern Gaza Strip, with some families being forced to flee more than once, and many taking refuge in crowded health facilities.

In an infinite toll, the toll of the ongoing Israeli aggression against Gaza by land, sea and air since the seventh of last October has risen to more than 21,500 dead and about 55,000 injured, in addition to thousands of missing persons, the majority of whom are children and women.

UN Security Council discusses situation in Middle East, including Palestine

Friday, the United Nations Security Council convened to discuss the situation in the Middle East, with a specific focus on Palestine.

Khaled Khiari, the Deputy Head of Political Affairs for the Middle East at the United Nations, delivered a briefing highlighting the concerning and deteriorating situation in the region. He reiterated the UN Secretary-General's call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for humanitarian reasons.

The UN official warned of the ongoing risk of regional escalation of the conflict, with potential devastating consequences for the entire area, given the involvement of multiple stakeholders.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed profound concern earlier today about the continued extension and regional expansion of the conflict, warning of potentially destructive consequences for the entire region.

In a statement, Guterres pointed to a continuing risk of a broader regional conflict, the longer the conflict in Gaza persists, given the danger of escalation and misjudgment by multiple actors.

He added that the escalation of violence in the occupied West Bank, including intensified operations by Israeli occupying forces, the increase in casualties, and settler violence, is extremely alarming.

Antonio Guterres...with the humanitarian "keffiyeh".

Assas Media

Assas Media

Opinion Writer

By Ayman Jazini

Antonio Guterres did it. But no one else did it. We waited for what he said from many capitals, some in the East and some in the West, and some were the last and the first, between us.

We have waited since the seventh of last October to hear a voice proclaiming the truth, but nothing reached our ears, or the ears of this deaf world, except his voice. Only António Guterres, in this big forest called the world, did it.

From the edifice of the United Nations, whose Secretary-General he holds, and at the Security Council meeting, Guterres said with a full mouth that what Hamas did in Operation “Al-Aqsa Flood” “did not come out of nowhere.”

Beyond that, he expressed concern about the “clear” violations of international humanitarian law in Gaza, stressing that “no party to the armed conflict is above this law.” He added that what Hamas did "does not justify the mass killing taking place in Gaza," and "the Palestinian people have been subjected to a stifling occupation for 56 years."

A history of positions

Guterres's statements did not go unnoticed by the Israelis, as Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen responded sharply to him, reminding him of the killing of Israeli civilians in the attacks launched by Hamas on Israel.

Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, also called on him to resign, and wrote on his page on the X website a post in which he declared that he was not fit to lead the United Nations because he "showed an understanding of terrorism and murder."

Guterres' positions on what is happening in Gaza are neither his first nor his only ones. He had previously taken many positions in support of justice when he was Prime Minister of Portugal, and he actively participated in international efforts to resolve the East Timor crisis.

Guterres' positions on what is happening in Gaza are neither his first nor his only ones. He had previously taken many positions in support of justice when he was Prime Minister of Portugal

During the period in which he served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees between 2005 and 2015, he contributed to improving the organization’s performance and increasing the number of its affiliates and workers in areas of conflict and tension. The conflicts in Syria, Iraq, South Sudan, the Central African Republic and Yemen led to a significant increase in activities. UNHCR, the number of displaced people and refugees due to wars and conflicts rose from 38 million in 2005 to 110 million displaced people and refugees in May 2023.

Guterres also settled negotiations on the transfer of sovereignty over Macau, a Portuguese colony, to Chinese control in 1999, after 12 years.

The most prominent of Guterres' stances, away from politics, is his stance on homosexuality, as he repeatedly stated that he "does not like homosexuality," saying that it "disturbs him."

Semi-biography

He is António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres. He was born on April 30, 1949. A Portuguese politician who served as Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 until 2002. After that, he served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from June 2005 until December 2015. He served for a period as President of the Socialist International, and is currently the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Since January 1, 2017.

Guterres studied physics and electrical engineering at the Higher Institute of Technology of the University of Lisbon. He took up teaching there with the rank of assistant professor after his graduation. Three years later, he moved into politics, joining the ranks of the Portuguese Socialist Party in 1974.

Guterres as Prime Minister and Secretary-General

During his presidency of his country's Council of Ministers, Guterres tightened his grip on his country's budget, reducing its deficit, reducing the inflation rate, raising labor market participation rates, especially among women, improving tax collection, and expanding investment in the educational sector.

The most prominent position of Guterres, away from politics, is his position on homosexuality, as he repeatedly stated that he “does not like homosexuality,” saying that it “disturbs” him.

This was in his country the day he came to power there. Today, during his tenure as Secretary-General of the United Nations, Guterres seeks to return this comprehensive and reference international institution to exercising its assigned role: maintaining international peace and security.

Guterres' positions and statements give hope that the United Nations will return to the foundations on which it was founded in 1945, soon after the end of World War II. The Charter of the United Nations defines the purpose of its establishment as maintaining international peace and security by taking effective collective measures to prevent and eliminate threats to peace, developing friendly relations between states based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, and promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all. Without discrimination based on race, gender, language or religion, in addition to being a center for coordinating the actions of states in achieving these common goals.

But unfortunately, the events that followed World War II, especially the Cold War, the conflict between the global poles, and then the United States of America’s sole leadership of the world after the collapse of the Soviet Union, marginalized the role assigned to it and what was expected of all the peoples of the world, especially the weak and oppressed Third World ones.

What Guterres is doing, and what he is seeking, today more than ever, calls for the necessity of expanding the powers of this international organization, and giving it what helps it implement its decisions, to achieve a safer, more secure, more stable, just, and happier world. As for our Arab region, only the implementation of international resolutions issued by this organization, starting with Resolutions 194 and 242, all the way to Resolution 1701, which Israel violates every day, in front of the entire world, is capable of returning rights to their owners and bringing peace to the region.

Former Israeli PM Barak presents broad outlines for Israel's exit from its "dangerous" impasse in Gaza

On Friday, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak published an opinion article in which he analyzed the war on Gaza, the future of the Strip, and who will rule it the next day.

Ehud Barak said in the article published by the Israeli Channel 12, “Despite the clear American support and the openness of many countries in the region to study new ideas to solve the problem in Gaza at the beginning of the war, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu systematically avoided any discussion about what will happen here in the end.

Barak added, “October 7, 2023 is the most dangerous event in the history of Israel, which led to the killing of 1,300 people and the kidnapping of 250 others, in addition to humiliation, inefficiency, and dysfunction in the state’s systems.

The former Israeli Prime Minister stressed that this created a multidimensional and unprecedented crisis of confidence.

He reported in the context that the security apparatus quickly came to its senses and immediately went to war with Hamas.

What has been accomplished so far?

Ehud Barak stated that after about three months of fighting and in difficult circumstances, the Israeli army achieved great achievements, stressing that the goals of the war are still far from being achieved.

The former minister added that Hamas still controls the Rafah and Al-Mawasi areas, where more than one and a half million people are concentrated, and they are the absolute majority of the citizens of the Gaza Strip.

He claimed that Hamas' military capabilities were severely damaged in the areas where the Israeli army was operating, stressing that the movement still maintains significant operational capabilities in parts of the Gaza Strip that have not yet been destroyed.

He stated in his article that there is no concrete agreement on the table regarding the hostages, noting that Hamas is demanding “an end to the war,” which should not be agreed upon as a condition of the deal.

He also touched on the confrontation with Hezbollah, where he confirmed that serious damage had occurred on both sides, and the matter could expand into a comprehensive conflict if Israel was forced to use force to remove Hezbollah from the border if the attempt to reach a political agreement regarding the implementation of Resolution 1701 failed.

"The next day"

In the face of these circumstances and in order to achieve its goals, Israel had to, from day one, discuss the broad outlines of the “next day” with the Americans and with them, or through them, with Egypt, Jordan, the Emirates, and Saudi Arabia.

He stated that these neighbors are part of the “moderate axis” formed by the United States in front of the “rebellious axis” that includes Iran, Syria, Hezbollah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and others.

In this context, the former minister cited an old Roman proverb that says, “If you do not know which port you are seeking to reach, the wind will not reach you,” and this applies to the Israeli government these days.

What does Israel want?

Israel, and rightly so, is not prepared for Hamas to continue to rule Gaza and pose a threat to its citizens, and seeks to undermine its military and governmental capabilities and replace it with another party. On the other hand, Israel does not intend, with the exception of Ben Gvir and Smotrich, to remain permanently a civilian ruler in Gaza and accept 2.2 million Palestinians under its responsibility, due to the consequences that this will have, indicating that the Palestinians are not moving anywhere.

He continued, saying: "Those who believe that it is possible in 2024 to embark on the 'voluntary migration' of millions of Gazans - a euphemism for the word 'transfer' - are daydreaming."

"The right scheme"

Who can take responsibility? No Arab ruler, even a friend of Israel, would agree to do this on a regular basis.

The most likely solution is a joint Arab force from countries that have peace or normalization agreements with Israel, as well as Saudi Arabia. For example, a force led by Egypt and supported by the United States and the Arab League. The force takes control of the Gaza Strip from Israel with the end of the reduction of Hamas’ ruling powers for a limited period ranging between six months and a year. With the possibility of extension.

During these months, the force will gradually work to return the Gaza Strip to civilian control and management by the “reinforced Palestinian Authority.” The force can also continue to work alongside the Palestinian Authority for an additional period of time, which will allow the dismantling of the remaining Hamas operational capacity, especially missiles and weapons.

“Taking into account Israel’s perimeter security needs, freedom of action, security supervision against the entry of weapons, etc., the “moderate axis” countries, especially Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, can be a factor in financing reconstruction and infrastructure projects in Gaza, including an electricity and water station. A locality and a port under security supervision,” according to the proposal that Barak sees.

Outline

The Israeli minister added, saying: “These are the broad outlines of the reasonable solution, which is almost the only one, and whoever tries to thwart it will be responsible for Israel remaining stuck in the mud of Gaza for many years, a situation that will be very destructive and bloody, or the alternative is the return of Hamas to power or dangerous chaos under the control of tribal gangs.”

He continued, saying: “The solution could mature in some differences regarding this or that detail, as a result of the required negotiation and coordination, and it is clear that the Palestinian Authority must achieve a real leap in the ability and will to move, and it is also clear that the government apparatus will contain many residents.” Gazans include technocrats with an Islamic background, but those who were not involved in any armed activity.”

Ehud Barak stressed that there is no ideal solution, stressing that a practical alternative must be chosen that erases Hamas from being an organization with military capabilities on the border with Israel, and this plan is capable of passing this test, in reference to the proposal that he explained previously.

In this regard, he pointed out that even if Netanyahu promised something along these lines, there would not be a single person in the White House or in any of the regional capitals who would believe him.

What's the solution?

The painful conclusion is that the only reasonable outlines that meet the Israeli, American and regional interests of the “axis of moderates” cannot be in a single surrender with Netanyahu as prime minister of Israel, and with Ben Gvir and Smotrich as ministers.

Barak stressed that the continuation of this government’s rule will inevitably lead to the loss of the opportunity to adopt the only possible plan and to fall into one of the two things, “the shameful descent from the tree” without achieving the goals of the war in Gaza, with the increasing risk of fire in the north and dangerous friction with the United States, while blaming the situation. Shame on the Israeli army and security forces on the one hand, and on President Biden on the other hand, for taking a wild gamble in the form of trying to drag the United States against its will into a regional conflict with Iran, indicating that none of it should be allowed to happen.

He concluded his article by saying: “Reality is knocking on the door and demanding an answer: Where are we heading? We need to decide, and it is not possible that the person who bears the main responsibility for the abyss into which we have fallen will also be the person who will direct our path from the abyss to the sunlit landscape.” The time has come for new elections, the people, and only the people can decide who will be entrusted with the steering wheel, and what path is chosen to achieve the goals of the war, restore Israel’s stability, achieve security and restore self-confidence and confidence in the leadership,” indicating that the path of correction will not Be short or easy.

Borrell: The Israeli army continues to cause “heavy civilian casualties” in Gaza

European Union Foreign and Security Policy Commissioner Josep Borrell said on Friday that the Israeli army, which has a duty to protect civilians, continues to cause “heavy civilian casualties” in the Gaza Strip.

This came in a post by Burrell, through his account on the “X” platform.

Borrell pointed out that the attack on the Maghazi refugee camp in the Gaza Strip was one of the “deadliest bombings.”

He added, "The attack led to the displacement of another 150,000 people."

Borrell called for an urgent “temporary cessation” of clashes.

On Thursday, the Israeli army acknowledged that an air strike it launched on Al-Maghazi camp on December 24 led to the death of dozens of innocent Palestinians.

The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation said: “The army refers to the attack launched by the Air Force on Sunday/Monday night, in the Maghazi refugee camp, which led to the killing of dozens of uninvolved civilians, and admits that the attack caused damage to buildings near the target of the attack, which harmed civilians.” .

Since last October 7, the Israeli army has been waging a devastating war on Gaza, which as of Friday left “21,507 martyrs and 55,915 injured, most of them children and women,” massive infrastructure destruction and an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, according to the Gaza Strip authorities and the United Nations.

Biden administration approves an arms deal to “Israel,” bypassing congressional review

The administration of US President Joe Biden, for the second time in a row, bypassed Congress in the decision to approve an emergency deal to sell weapons to Israel, which continues its war on the Gaza Strip in light of increasing international criticism.

The US State Department announced on Friday that Secretary Anthony Blinken informed Congress that he had taken a second emergency decision to sell military equipment worth $147.5 million to Israel.

It added: “Given Israel’s defense needs, Blinken informed Congress that he exercised his delegated authority in the existing state of emergency that required immediate approval of the sale.”

The ministry stated in its statement that “the United States is committed to Israel’s security, and it is important for American national interests to ensure Israel’s ability to defend itself against the threats it faces.”

The decision means that the purchase will bypass congressional review of foreign military sales.

These decisions are rare, but not unprecedented, and come when the US administration sees an urgent need to sell weapons without waiting for the approval of the Legislative Council.

Blinken had made a similar decision, on December 9, by agreeing to sell approximately 14,000 rounds of tank ammunition to Israel, worth more than $106 million.

Both moves came as President Joe Biden's request for a nearly $106 billion aid package for Ukraine, Israel and other national security needs remains stalled in Congress.

Some Democratic representatives indicated that the proposed US aid amounting to $14.3 billion to Israel would be made conditional on concrete steps to reduce the number of civilian casualties in the Gaza war.

The US State Department sought to confront any possible criticism of the sale deal for human rights reasons by saying that it is in constant contact with Israel, to emphasize the importance of reducing civilian casualties to a minimum.

Axios: Hamas agreed to resume negotiations to release the hostages

On Friday, Axios revealed details regarding the ongoing talks to release hostages held by Hamas in exchange for an Israeli ceasefire in Gaza.

The website quoted three Israeli officials as saying that Qatari mediators informed Israel that Hamas had “agreed in principle” to resume talks on a new agreement, to secure the release of about 30 hostages held in Gaza, in exchange for stopping the fighting for several weeks.

Israeli officials, according to Axios, hope to obtain further clarification over the weekend, to find out whether Hamas is actually serious about the new agreement. An Israeli official said that the Qatari message is still very preliminary, “but it is positive because for the first time since... "The end of the previous deal, Hamas indicates that it is ready to return to the negotiating table."

Twelve weeks after the attack launched by Hamas fighters on towns in southern Israel, which they say killed 1,200 and took 240 hostages, Israeli forces turned large areas of the Gaza Strip into rubble.

Almost all of the Strip's 2.3 million residents have been displaced from their homes at least once, and many are now fleeing for a third or fourth time, often taking refuge in makeshift tents or huddled under tarpaulins and plastic in the open.

On Friday, the health authorities in Gaza announced that 187 Palestinians were killed in Israeli raids during the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths to 21,507, or about one percent of the Strip’s population, and it is feared that thousands of bodies are still buried under the rubble of destroyed neighborhoods.

Mediation efforts undertaken by Egypt and Qatar to negotiate a ceasefire have not yielded fruit since the collapse of a week-long truce at the end of November.

Article in The Guardian: The Gaza war is the deadliest for children, and the worst is yet to come

The head of the Department of Public Health at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, Devi Sridhar, confirmed that the warning cries issued by international relief organizations regarding the conditions in Gaza are extremely terrifying, and indicate the existence of major fears of unprecedented tragedies occurring against civilians in the besieged Strip.

Sridhar said - in an article in the British newspaper The Guardian - that the war on Gaza set many records, especially with regard to the destruction of health care facilities and infrastructure.

She added that during this war, schools, hospitals, their workers, and ambulances were targeted, as well as medical relief organizations such as Doctors Without Borders and Save the Children, and international agreements such as the Geneva Convention were not respected.

Most deadly to children

The head of the Department of Public Health at the Scottish University of Edinburgh added that this war is also described as the deadliest for children, as about 160 children were killed every day last month, according to the World Health Organization.

It is also the bloodiest war for journalists in 30 years - as Sridhar explains in her article - and she adds that these deaths are likely to be only the beginning, as public health experts know that a large number of children are likely to die due to the spread of diseases.

Sridhar said that families can hardly find clean water or usable toilets, in addition to the absence of food and medicine and the absence of a trained medical team with complete medical equipment, highlighting that these are the basic needs that any human being - especially infants and children - needs to survive.

She also mentioned that diarrhea rates among Gaza children inside the camps - according to the World Health Organization - exceeded the normal level by more than 100 times at the beginning of last November, which means the possibility of dehydration and immediate death.

warning

Sridhar warned that nearly a quarter of the population of Gaza may die within one year unless something changes in the Strip, highlighting that this number is approximate but depends on data using the terrifying real numbers of deaths in similar conflicts. She stressed that international organizations are trying to sound the alarm. The danger, and World Health Organization spokeswoman Margaret Harris was quoted as regretting that “the world seems to have lost its moral compass.”

For its part, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) warned that "the lack of water, food, medicine and protection poses a greater threat than bombs to the lives of thousands in Gaza."

Sridhar said that she has been working in the field of public health for two decades, and has not heard similar warning cries from relief organizations, which indicates that there are major fears of unprecedented tragedies occurring against civilians in the Gaza Strip.

South Africa submits a request to international justice to initiate proceedings against Israel for committing acts of genocide in Gaza.

On Friday, South Africa submitted a request to the International Court of Justice to initiate proceedings against Israel for carrying out acts of genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, the international court announced.

South Africa asserted that “Israel’s actions and omissions bear the character of genocide because they are accompanied by the requisite specific intent to destroy the Palestinians of Gaza as part of the broader national, racial and ethnic group, that is, the Palestinians,” the International Court of Justice said in a statement.
