Iran announces the arrest of a Swedish citizen on suspicion of "espionage"

Tehran - (AFP) - The Iranian Ministry of Security (Intelligence) announced Saturday the arrest of a Swede on suspicion of "espionage", without providing clarifications about his identity or the date of his arrest, while Stockholm confirmed that the case dates back to months ago and had previously been revealed.

The Iranian announcement came in light of the tense relations between Tehran and Stockholm, against the backdrop of a life imprisonment sentence issued in Sweden against former Iranian official Hamid Nuri for his supposed role in the executions of Iranian dissidents in 1988.

The Ministry of Security said in a statement on its website that it had "identified and arrested a citizen of the Kingdom of Sweden for espionage."

It indicated that the suspect entered the territory of the Islamic Republic "months ago after the arrest of another European spy, and his mission was to obtain information" about the latter, without additional details.

The Swedish Foreign Ministry confirmed to AFP in May that the Iranian authorities had "recently" arrested a Swede in his thirties.

Today, the ministry confirmed, in response to a question by France Presse, that the Iranian statement was due to "a previously known issue that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working on," stressing that it is the same issue that it had previously revealed, and is not related to a new arrest.

The Iranian Ministry of Intelligence reported that the suspect had visited Israel, the Islamic Republic's arch regional enemy, more than once before entering Iranian territory.

It announced that he had made "suspicious contacts" during his "previous visits to Iran," and that his arrest was carried out "by order of the judicial authority while he was leaving" the country.

On July 14, a Swedish court sentenced Nuri, 61, to life imprisonment after his trial for "crimes against international law", which is the term used by Swedish justice to denote crimes against humanity and war crimes, as well as "murder".

Tehran then condemned the verdict, saying it was "unacceptable" and "unacceptable" and described as "political".

It also announced the recall of its ambassador to Sweden for "consultations" in response to the ruling.

The trial of Nouri, a former official in the Iranian judiciary, came against the background of his supposed role in the mass executions of a large number of opposition prisoners during the 1980s.

This was the first time that an Iranian official was tried in connection with the executions that mainly affected individuals in the "People's Mujahedin Organization", which Tehran considers "terrorist", in connection with attacks in Iran carried out at that time by the organization that was allied with Saddam Hussein's regime, with the end of war between the two countries.

Nuri's trial began in Stockholm in August 2021, which led to strained relations between Sweden and Iran and raised fears of repercussions that might affect Western prisoners in Iran, especially the Iranian-Swedish academic Ahmad Reza Jalali, who has been sentenced to death since 2017.

World Cup 2022: World football stars flock to Doha amid an enthusiastic welcome

(AFP) International football stars continue to flock to the Qatari capital, Doha, to participate in the first World Cup finals in the Middle East and an Arab country. After the arrival of the stars of the French and Argentine national teams on Wednesday, their German and Spanish counterparts landed on Thursday, amid an enthusiastic reception by fans from all over the world.
In the wake of the arrival of the 2018 World Champions led by star Kylian Mbappe, and "Albiceleste" with his legend Lionel Messi on Wednesday, the international teams participating in the Qatar World Cup continued to flock to Hamad International Airport and their camps in Doha.
International fans await the arrival of Belgium and its star Eden Hazard, Croatia and its playmaker Luka Modric, who is expected on Friday, as well as Portugal and its star Cristiano Ronaldo, who will play their last preparatory match against Nigeria in Lisbon on Thursday, while Brazil and its star Neymar will be the last to arrive on Saturday at the end of its preparatory camp in Turin, Italy.
The delegation of the German national team, which achieved a hard-won victory over its Omani counterpart (1-0), arrived Wednesday in its last preparatory match, Thursday noon, to stay in Al-Ruwais, in the Zulal health resort, at the northern tip of the Gulf peninsula.
As for Spain, which faces Jordan in Amman on Thursday evening before heading to Qatar on Thursday night into Friday, it is preparing for a very difficult match against Germany in the second round of Group E competitions on November 27.
Waiting for that, and in the shadow of the skyscrapers of Doha, where the pictures of the main stars of the tournament are displayed, fans flock from all over the world to attend this great global event, the first in the Arab world, which is surrounded by many non-sporting problems: the human rights of migrant workers, and the issue of LGBT discrimination or even the environmental impact of heroism.
Dozens of fans, most of them residents of Doha from Lebanon, France or India, equipped with flags, shirts, trumpets and drums, accompanied the French team to camp at the end of Wednesday, six days before they faced their Australian counterpart in the first round.
The French enter the tournament with many doubts about their chances of defending the title after a series of injuries that hit their ranks, the latest of which was German Leipzig striker Christopher Nkunku (knee), and he was replaced by Randal Kolo Mwani, who joined his ranks on Thursday morning.
France is facing strong competition for the title from Brazil, ranked first in the world, and its neighbor, Argentina, which crushed its host, the UAE, by five goals on Wednesday, including a double by Angel Di Maria and a goal by Messi, expanding the number of consecutive matches without losing to 36, and is one match away from the record number of matches. Without losing, which is 37, which Italy achieved in 2021.
There is also the Netherlands, runner-up three times (1974, 1978, 2010) and the eternal contender for the world title.
Its coach, Louis van Gaal, who is known for his frankness, did not avoid the differences that accompanied the World Cup in Qatar. He said Wednesday that fans who do not want to come to Qatar or even follow the 2022 World Cup are "right" if that is their conviction.
For his part, French President Emmanuel Macron considered the politicization of sports "a very bad idea."
"These questions must be asked when you are given the honor of hosting," he said on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Summit in Bangkok, rejecting calls to boycott the world championship.
Some fans said they were hesitant to travel to Qatar, between the non-sporting controversies and the cost of the several thousand euros for a month's trip.
However, excitement is beginning to build around the main World Cup fan zone, located in Al Bidda Park, in central Doha which is set to officially open on Saturday, on the eve of the opening match between hosts Qatar and Ecuador.
Some of the volunteers present at one of the entrances to the area Wednesday, during a test event in the evening, confirmed that it "was full."
The first scenes of jubilation also appeared with the arrival of players from England, France and Argentina with many fans, some from the Indian subcontinent, who competed over drums, songs, shirts and flags.
Indians in Qatar expressed their dissatisfaction with media reports and posts on social media that talked about "fake fans" in Doha.
"Absolutely not," fans told AFP, considering the doubt "very insulting and frustrating".
In a video broadcast by the Qatar News Agency, Nasser al-Khater, CEO of the World Cup, denied "baseless" and "defamatory" rumors that Qatar paid foreign workers to play the role of "fake fans".
He also confirmed that "3.1 million tickets have been sold," that is, all available tickets, and promised an "extraordinary tournament."

England Championship: Arsenal leads again, Salah drops Tottenham in his stronghold, and a great start for Emery

(AFP) - Arsenal regained the lead in the English Premier League in football from defending champion Manchester City, with a remarkable victory outside its home stadium over its London neighbor Chelsea 1-0 on Sunday in the fifteenth stage, which witnessed the leadership of Egyptian Mohamed Salah for his team, Liverpool, to a victory over its host, Tottenham 2. -1, and a wonderful start for Spanish coach Unai Emery with Aston Villa, by defeating Manchester United 3-1.
Arsenal raised its tally to 34 points, two points ahead of Manchester City, who beat Fulham 2-1 on Saturday, while Chelsea remained seventh with 21 points after failing to win a fourth consecutive match.
And the Spanish coach of Arsenal, Mikel Arteta, who played his 150 match as coach of the team, was the same number of games he played with him as a player, happy with this “great victory for us. It is another step for us as a team. To come here to face a team of high caliber and to perform and win, this will be granted.” Young men, more faith” in the team’s ability to try to win the first title since 2004 and the days of French coach Arsene Wenger.
He continued, "We are a really young team, but we showed a lot of composure and courage on the way we played in this stadium. I am really impressed. We were under pressure to get back to the top, and what we did today was unbelievable."
Arsenal was the better side for most of the match, in a match that did not witness many chances, except for a dangerous one for the guests, when Brazilian Gabriel Martinelli raised a perfect ball inside the area, so his compatriot Gabriel Jesus slipped behind the Chelsea defenders and turned his head outside the three sticks, and the goal was open in front of him at the end of the first half.
In the second half, Chelsea coach Graham Potter sent off Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, former Arsenal player, and replaced him with Albanian Armando Broja. Arsenal succeeded in opening the scoring when Bukayo Saka lifted the ball from a corner kick that passed everyone, and Brazilian defender Gabriel followed it into the net from close range (63).
Arsenal's Norwegian playmaker Martin Odegaard wasted a good opportunity to boost his team's lead when he curled a ball that passed to the right post (74).
Emery made a great start with his new team, Aston Villa, as successor to Stephen Gerrard, by leading him to his first home victory in the league against Manchester United since August 19, 1995, by defeating him 3-1, which is the same result as his last victory over the “Red Devils” among his fans in “ Premier League".
And in a match that United started with the participation of Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo as a key player, while also wearing the captain’s armband, Jacob Ramsey caught the eye, after he became, according to “Opta” statistics, only the fourth player in the history of the Premier League to score for his team and his own goal by mistake and make a decisive pass in the same match, after Kevin Davis (December 2008), Welshman Gareth Bale (November 2012) and Wayne Rooney (October 2012).
Ramsey played the role of a passer in Villa's first goal in the match, which was scored by Jamaican Leon Bailey since the 7th minute, then after French Luca Digne added the second from a beautiful free kick (11), the 21-year-old restored hope to United when the ball turned from him after a shot from Luke Shaw and deceived His Argentine goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez (45), before himself restored the difference to two goals at the beginning of the second half, after a pass from Olly Watkins (49).
With this result, thanks to which he raised his score to 15 points in thirteenth place, Villa inflicted a first defeat on the team of Dutch coach Eric ten Hag in his last 9 matches locally and continually, and the fourth this season, to freeze his score at 23 points in fifth place, before the date between them was renewed Thursday. In the third round of the League Cup, this time at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag was not satisfied with what he saw from his team, saying, "It is not acceptable to concede a goal so quickly at the beginning of the second half on the counterattack. Our players are experienced and you have to win individual matches. They (Villa) looked as if they were more physically fit. It is unacceptable. On Players take responsibility and be ready."
After two successive defeats against Nottingham and Leeds, life returned to Liverpool by defeating Tottenham in the latter's stronghold 2-1, thanks to its top scorer, Salah, who scored both goals.
The first came after a beautiful collective game and a pass inside the area from Uruguayan Darwin Nunes (11), and the second came after a ball that arrived directly from Brazilian goalkeeper Allison on the outskirts of the London team’s area, so Eric Dyer missed his vertical pass towards his French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, so the “Pharaoh” kidnapped it and played it in the ball. The net (40), scoring his sixth goal in the league this season and his fourteenth in 20 matches in all competitions.
Salah told British Sky Sports, "I think we were lucky in the first half. We played well and scored two goals. We could have scored in the second half but we weren't lucky. We did a good job by getting the three points... I'm focused on creating The difference is that I made it today."
Tottenham returned to the atmosphere of the meeting in the second half, thanks to its top scorer, Harry Kane, after a pass from Swedish substitute Diane Koloshevsky (70), but his eleventh goal in the league this season was not enough in the end to deny Liverpool its first victory away from home and the fifth in total, to raise the German coach’s team. Jürgen Klopp scored 19 points in eighth place, while the balance of his London host froze at 26 points after receiving his fourth defeat of the season.
Newcastle took full advantage of the fall of Spurs and snatched third place from it after Newcastle continued its brilliance by defeating Southampton with four goals for Paraguayan Miguel Almiron, who raised his tally to 8 goals (35), New Zealander Chris Wood (58), Joe Willock (62) and Brazilian Bruno Guimarães (2). +90), against a goal by Frenchman Romain Peru (89).
Crystal Palace snatched a fatal victory from its host and London neighbor, West Ham, 2-1, thanks to the goal of Frenchman Michael Ulis (4 + 90).

13 years in prison for the Chinese-Canadian star Chris Wu in a rape case

Beijing - (AFP) - Chinese-Canadian singer and actor Chris Wu , who is widely popular in China, was sentenced Friday to 13 years in prison for rape , in a case that sparked a scandal in China.

A court in the Chaoyang district of Beijing sentenced the 32-year-old artist to "11 years and six months in prison" for rape.

The court's decision also included a sentence against Chris Wu A, "to one year and ten months in prison, for gathering people with intent to commit adultery."
The ruling stipulates that Wu will be deported from China after the end of his sentence.

Wu was known as a member of the South Korean Chinese band EXO, before he separated from it in 2014 to begin his successful career as a singer, actor and model.

And last year, a 19-year-old Chinese student accused him of raping her during a date when she was 17.
After a wave of widespread condemnation sparked by the rape scandal, several international brands such as "Louis Vuitton", "L'Oreal", "Bulgari" and "Porsche" terminated their partnership with him after he was a media face for them.

Soon, other women claimed online that they had been subjected to sexually harassing behavior from Wu's team, for example by inviting them to parties.

This case revived the "Me Too" (Me Too) movement in China, but this wave has not seen anything new since the issue emerged.
For fear of provoking an uncontrolled mass movement, the authorities that control the Internet on social media have blocked hashtags and keywords that refer to cases of sexual harassment.

The World Economic Forum calls for solidarity to face unprecedented global challenges

DAVOS - (Xinhua) -- President of the World Economic Forum Borg Brende said Friday that avoiding a recession and building a strong growth agenda will be crucial to preventing the fragmentation of the global economy.

In his closing remarks during the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Brinde said that progress had been made at the 5-day forum on issues of climate ambition, equitable growth and frontier technologies.

The 2023 meeting of the World Economic Forum was held under the theme "Cooperation in a Fragmented World" and came against a backdrop of unprecedented global challenges, including high inflation, energy crisis, climate change and geopolitical conflict.

However, at the end of the forum, Brindi expressed his confidence that "we can shape a more resilient, sustainable and equitable future", but added that "the only way to do this is for us to be together".

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said during the meeting that "our world is suffering from a massive storm on a number of fronts," explaining that finding solutions to current global issues would be difficult if the world was united, but "instead, we face the most dangerous levels of geopolitical division and mistrust in generations.”

Forum participants, including Guterres, called on the world to heal the rift and restore confidence. "The time has come to forge paths of cooperation in our fragmented world," Guterres said.

ASEAN warns tension over Taiwan could lead to 'open disputes'

Phnom Penh (AFP) - Foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Thursday urged restraint as China holds massive military exercises off Taiwan , warning the situation could lead to "open disputes".

Beijing launched its biggest military maneuvers around Taiwan in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the self-ruled island.

He warned the foreign ministers of ASEAN countries during their meeting in Phnom Penh of any "provocative act." They said in a joint statement that the situation "could lead to destabilization of the region and thus to miscalculations, dangerous confrontations, open conflicts and unpredictable consequences between major powers."

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will attend the summit with his US counterpart Anthony Blinken, but they are not expected to hold a private meeting.

China considers Taiwan part of its territory and promises to take it back one day, by force if necessary. She was incensed by Pelosi's visit, the highest-ranking elected US official to visit the island in 25 years, and vowed a "punitive" response.

The European Union's foreign policy representative, Josep Borrell, also condemned Thursday the Chinese military maneuvers, and at the same time considered that "there is no justification" for using Pelosi's visit to the island as a "pretext".

"There is no justification for using a visit as a pretext for hostile military activity in the Taiwan Strait. It is normal and routine for legislators from our country to pay international visits," Borrell said in a tweet from Phnom Penh, too.

Kong Phuc, Cambodian Vice Foreign Minister and ASEAN spokesperson, called on the two parties to maintain the stability of the situation. "We hope that de-escalation will begin (...) and that things will return to normal in the Taiwan Strait," he told reporters.

And the Association of Southeast Asian Nations is divided between countries that have close relations with China, such as Burma, Cambodia and Laos, and others that are more wary of Beijing and its increasing international rise.

But none of the CIS countries officially recognized Taiwan, and none of them showed a desire to support Taipei against the Chinese giant.

The foreign ministers' statement, which did not name Taiwan, said the association was "ready to play a constructive role in facilitating peaceful dialogue," though it was not clear that the two sides were interested in outside mediation.

A meeting between the Chinese and US foreign ministers is not scheduled, but on Friday they will attend the ASEAN Regional Forum, the 27-country body set up to discuss security issues that also includes Russia and the European Union.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, who will attend the forum meeting, stressed the need to maintain the fragile status quo in the Taiwan Strait. "All sides must consider how they can contribute to de-escalating the current tensions," she told AFP.

Dozens of people with special needs demonstrate in Gaza to demand their rights

GAZA - (Xinhua) - Dozens of Palestinians with special needs demonstrated in the Gaza Strip today, Sunday, to demand their rights, coinciding with their international day, which falls on December 3 of each year.

The demonstration took place at the invitation of the Palestinian NGO Network, in front of the headquarters of the Ministries of Labor and Social Affairs, west of Gaza, during which banners were raised reading: (Whatever your needs are, you are distinguished), (I am distinguished, and my disability is not my death from life) and (My disability does not mean my end).

The demonstration came in accordance with the United Nations' global slogan "Transformational Solutions for Inclusive Development: The Role of Innovation in Nurturing an Accessible and Equitable World", amidst the participants' demand to demand the rights of persons with disabilities and their alignment with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The young man, Muhammad Ajour, a young man with disabilities, said during the demonstration that countries are reviewing their achievements in supporting disability issues, and we consider it a day of advocacy and demand for basic rights, which continue to be ignored by all Palestinian parties.

Ajour called on the Palestinian government to pass a comprehensive and free health insurance law for people with disabilities, in a manner that guarantees the preservation of their dignity and rights, the provision of complete and uncompromised medicines, and the facilitation of "treatment abroad" procedures for them.

He also called on the Palestinian government to adapt all its buildings to facilitate the access of persons with disabilities independently, stressing the importance of the Ministry of Local Government and Municipalities preventing the issuance of any new licenses for public and private buildings and roads except after ensuring that they are suitable for persons with disabilities.

In his turn, the Director of the NGO Network, Amjad Shawa, said in his speech that the rights of persons with disabilities require the implementation of the relevant Palestinian laws and the need to harmonize them within the international conventions and covenants for this category.

Shawa called on all Palestinian parties to assume their responsibilities and provide a safe environment, job opportunities and a future towards real development, especially for people with disabilities, calling on the international community to put pressure on Israel to lift its blockade imposed on the Strip.

There are approximately 49,000 people with disabilities in Gaza, equivalent to 2.4 of its total population, who live in "difficult conditions that their counterparts with disabilities in other societies around the world can hardly bear," according to officials of Palestinian associations.

In the year 1992, the United Nations designated the third of December of each year to be an international day for people with special needs, with the aim of increasing understanding of disability issues in order to guarantee the rights of people with special needs. This day also calls for raising awareness about the inclusion of people with disabilities in political, economic and cultural life.

70 Palestinian personalities launch an initiative for "national rescue" and change of the political system

Ramallah - "Jerusalem" dot com - A group of Palestinian national, political and social figures, including about 70 personalities, launched today, Wednesday, a political initiative entitled "The National Salvation Document - A Transitional Authority to Achieve Change and Reconstruction."

And the initiative announced the release of the dismissed leader from the Fatah movement, d. Nasser Al-Kidwa during a press conference, held via "Zoom" technology, on behalf of the signatories to it, and the former leader of the PLO, Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, also participated in it.

Writer Nihad Abu Ghosh told Al-Quds.com, one of the signatories to the initiative, “The initiative is important because it comes at a very dangerous moment of national decline, with the continuation of the division and the encroachment of the Israeli occupation, and the presence of manifestations of security chaos, in light of the decline in the place and role of the authority.” ".

Abu Ghosh continued, "This initiative comes to re-correct the direction of action towards changing the entire political system, on democratic bases whose title is to appeal to the people and for the PLO to be the sole and legitimate representative, and to work to find a unified national program, and it is an initiative whose texts are subject to amendment."

Abu Ghosh indicated that the initiative, in which about 70 personalities from different political tendencies participated and launched, does not represent a specific political party, but work is being done on common denominators among all, in order to expand the initiative, to rebuild the political system on a unified national program.

During the press conference, Al-Kidwa said: "The initiative comes more than a year after the cancellation of the legislative and presidential elections, and after insisting on convening the Central Council in February of this year, despite the legal and political defects it experienced, and with the continued sharp deterioration in the Palestinian situation and the political complacency towards it, and in an attempt to prevent the imminent complete collapse.

Al-Kidwa continued, "Our goal is to push for a national state that achieves a broad and profound change in the Palestinian political system, and rebuilds its institutions, in order to enable our people to confront the major dangers that threaten their existence and national goals."

Al-Kidwa stressed that the initiative presents a vision for the necessary broad and profound change, which includes rebuilding Palestinian institutions, especially the Palestine Liberation Organization through a new national council based on general elections, in addition to a package that includes ending division, restoring unity, forming a new government away from unfair conditions, and transition policy and how to achieve it.

Al-Kidwa stressed that "this perception requires a broad national consensus, as well as commitment to democracy and the foundations of good governance, and all the elements necessary to confront the aggression and the existing Israeli challenges, as the practical step to accomplish the above is to achieve a national meeting and dialogue that leads to consensus on the perception and the transition mechanism."

The initiative emphasized that the way to achieve change is through joint action in order to make a broad and deep change to the political system, that goes beyond what exists and creates seriousness. The initiative also emphasized commitment to the democratic nature of the Palestinian political system, according to the basic Palestinian documents, and the right of the Palestinian people to hold elections.

The initiative emphasized the commitment of the various factions and components of the Palestinian people, in all their places of residence, to dialogue and that the political arena has changed, and that there are new players and youth and social movements that have the right to be part of the reconfigured political system, and of the proposed transitional mechanism.

The initiative also emphasized adherence to the Palestine Liberation Organization as the sole and legitimate representative of the Palestinian people in all its places of residence, and emphasized the need to extricate the organization from its crisis, by rebuilding it in a way that enables it to face challenges.

The initiative called for rebuilding the Liberation Organization and preserving its role through the formation of a new National Council on the basis of elections. The rebuilding of the Liberation Organization must include agreement on a new national charter, a political program based on common denominators to which everyone is committed, and the organization's missions, provided that the central national goal is very clear.

The initiative touched on the mechanism of transition and the achievement of change and reconstruction, stressing that this requires achieving the aforementioned mechanism represented by the formation of a temporary body, which is responsible for conducting the national dialogue and implementing its results, provided that the date of the work of the body is specified for a period not exceeding one year, and that the membership is specific It is known, and in a way that reflects the actual Palestinian situation, including the recent changes that prevailed prior to the canceled elections, provided that the mechanism is formed through national consensus and is not a substitute for the existing bodies.

The initiative emphasized that the success of the proposed mechanism requires political, public and legal pressure to mobilize support for change.

Egypt is counting on fashion and culture to promote its image as a global tourist destination

Cairo - (AFP) - From the temples of Luxor to the pyramids of Giza, famous historical landmarks in Egypt host concerts, fashion shows and exhibitions, in light of the country's attempt to benefit from its ancient heritage to enhance its image as a major tourist destination and attract major brands.

On Saturday, the French House of Dior presented a fashion show for its men's collection at the Giza pyramid complex near Cairo, in an event that was its first in Egypt.

In October, the Temple of Hatshepsut in the southern city of Luxor hosted a fashion show by Italian designer Stefano Ricci.

The head of the Dior Group, Pietro Picciari, told AFP that the prestigious French house chose the Pyramid Complex to hold the show because it was "much more than just a background", as it was inspired in its new collection entitled "Celestial" ("Heavenly") from the history of ancient Egypt.

Perhaps the large "parade of mummies" that was held in Egypt last year, in a scene broadcast by television screens around the world, had an impact on attracting visitors to a country whose tourism sector contributes approximately 10% to its national product.

Even before the golden procession celebration, the Pharaonic archaeological sites remained a destination for world famous artists in various fields, as the international hip-hop and rock bands "Black Eyed Peas" and "Red Hot Chili Peppers" performed at the foot of the Giza pyramids. The French artist JR also exhibited his pictures there.

Prominent Egyptian art historian Bahia Shehab believes that such performances "encourage other brands and international cultural activists to come to Egypt."

This was confirmed by Egyptian fashion photographer Mohsen Othman, who told AFP that "it is necessary to organize such events in Egypt," as a fashion house the size of Dior "brings with it a huge budget," hoping that this will "support young designers who may put Egypt on the global fashion map.

Indeed, in September during Paris Fashion Week, the French luxury fashion house Balmain presented works bearing an Egyptian brand called "Okhtein", referring to two young sisters from Egypt who designed the products.

Despite the success of "Okhtein" products in penetrating Paris Fashion Week, exporting the products of Egyptian fashion houses abroad is still a complex process, in light of the need to reconsider the way this sector operates.

Most of the representatives of this sector, Othman says, "are self-taught people who have worked hard with few resources to reach the required level of global brands."

For her part, Engy Ismail, whose agency Flair works in luxury brand consulting, told AFP, "We have a large group of young designers who, with some professional training, can ... transform creativity into products."

Despite this, the Egyptian market in the fields of fashion and luxury jewelry has witnessed a remarkable boom, as Ismail says that the number of local brands has increased "from less than a hundred Egyptian brands to more than a thousand brands today."

Ismail explained that this large increase began in 2016 after the decision of the Central Bank of Egypt to devalue the local currency by approximately 50% against the US dollar, which deprived the largest Arab country in terms of population, with more than 104 million people, the ability to import.

In the face of reducing imports, according to Ismail, "a local market has emerged," especially since "(the class of) the richest 1 percent is sufficient to create demand" in a country that includes 86,000 people with wealth exceeding one million dollars, according to the "Credit Suisse" bank. .

"A recent competition organized by the Italian Vogue group enabled Egyptian brands to participate in Milan Fashion Week," she said.

However, these facilities seem insufficient for local creators, who complain about red tape in terms of customs procedures and the difficulty of obtaining travel visas.

"The (Egyptian) government's permission for Art Digit and Dior to organize events at the foot of the pyramids is a big step," says Nadine Abdel Ghaffar, whose agency, Art Digit, organizes an annual exhibition of contemporary art in the Giza pyramids area.

Abdel Ghaffar believes that Cairo is a magnet because of its ability to "merge contemporary and ancient art and heritage."

Shehab, a professor at the American University in Cairo, told AFP that Egypt has become "increasingly aware of the influence of soft power," relying on "culture to present its image."

Abdel Ghaffar says that it is necessary for the authorities to establish a unit dedicated to organizing marches, exhibitions, and even concerts and filming films in archaeological sites that qualify for this.

In the same context, Shehab adds, "If there is one sector in which we lose a lot of opportunities, it is the cinema," explaining that "we lost many of the great international producers who sought refuge in Morocco or even Saudi Arabia" due to the lack of permits to film in Egypt.

Because of these complications, the creators of the series "Moon Knight", one of the latest productions of the Marvel Hollywood studios that revolves around a superhero character granted power by an ancient Egyptian deity, had to create decorations that refer viewers to Cairo... in Budapest.

"Christian Islam" calls for standing by Jerusalem schools in their rejection of the Israeli curriculum

Jerusalem - "Al Quds" dot com - The Islamic Christian Organization for the Support of Jerusalem and Holy Sites called on Jerusalemite institutions to carry out the widest campaign of solidarity with Jerusalem schools and stand by them in refusing to implement the Israeli curriculum that the occupation authorities seek to impose by force on the city's schools.

Samanta Cristoforetti is the first European female astronaut to command the International Space Station

Paris, (AFP) - Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti on Wednesday became the first European to command the International Space Station, 400 kilometers above Earth, during a ceremony broadcast live from space.

The occasion provided an opportunity for the outgoing station commander, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev, to wink at the channel of the conflict in Ukraine, as he said, "Despite all the thunderstorms on Earth, our international communication continues."

This is the second period spent in space by Samantha Cristoforetti, the 45-year-old engineer and war pilot who moved to the International Space Station on April 27. She set the record for the longest space mission spent by a woman on a mission, with 199 days in orbit, between 2014 and 2015.

The Italian is also the fifth woman, and the first non-American woman to lead the vehicle since its official designation in 2000.

During a friendly ceremony overshadowed by the atmosphere of fun, the station's outgoing Russian commander, Oleg Artemyev, handed a symbolic golden key to his successor in launching its mission, which it will take over until the tenth of October, until its return to Earth.

The Russian cosmonaut praised the work of the crew of ten cosmonauts from three countries. He described the International Space Station as "a continuation of the Soyuz-Apollo program, when the relationship between these countries was complicated, and when men took up this path leading to peace and ending war everywhere."

Russian-Western cooperation in the space field has been affected by the military offensive launched by Russia since February 24 against its neighbor Ukraine.

Western sanctions against Russia as a result of this invasion affect, in part, the Russian space sector, and may have repercussions on the International Space Station, especially in terms of disrupting some catering operations.

Cristoforetti praised the work of her colleagues, noting that the station crew is "a small part of the enormous team that is on Earth" managing the operations of the International Space Station.

The decision to choose the leaders of the International Space Station is up to the five space agencies participating in the International Space Station: NASA (the United States), Roskosmos (Russia), the European Space Agency, the Canadian Space Agency and the Japanese space agency "JAXA".

Guterres: The rule of law is the essence of achieving a comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution

New York - "Jerusalem" dot com - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres affirmed that "the rule of law is the essence of achieving a just and comprehensive peace, based on the two-state solution, in line with United Nations resolutions, international law and previous agreements."

This came in his briefing during the open debate held today, Thursday, at the ministerial level, under the title "Encouraging and strengthening the rule of law in the maintenance of international peace and security: the rule of law among nations."

Guterres stressed in his speech that "the expansion of settlements by Israel, as well as home demolitions and evictions, lead to anger and despair," expressing "grave concern about the unilateral measures that we have witnessed in recent days."

He stressed that "any annexation of the lands of a country by another country as a result of the threat or use of force constitutes a violation of the Charter and international law."

Guterres stressed that ending impunity is essential.

He said that United Nations entities and mechanisms are working to strengthen the rule of law and its implementation through the International Court of Justice, the Human Rights Council and its fact-finding missions and commissions of inquiry.

In this context, he explained, the International Court of Justice, with its unique mandate, occupies a special place.

It noted the importance of accepting the compulsory jurisdiction of the Court and called on all Member States to do so without any reservations.

He said that the members of the Security Council had a special responsibility here and should play a leadership role.

He also stressed that "the rule of law is the foundation of the United Nations and our mission of bringing peace," noting the vital role of the Security Council in supporting it.

The Secretary-General has made it clear that the cornerstone of the rule of law is that all persons, institutions and entities, public and private, including the State itself, are held accountable to the law.

Quoting from the UN Charter, he said, "We the peoples of the United Nations have sworn to ourselves...to show conditions under which justice and respect for obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained."

He added that today's debate in the Security Council sends a powerful message that "ensuring the rule of law is our priority, and that all countries must abide by international standards."

"Stakeholders, including Member States, regional organizations, civil society and the private sector - have a responsibility to contribute to building and supporting the rule of law," he added.

He pointed out that "the international situation shows that we still have a lot to go," warning of the rule of chaos, "as civilians in every region of the world suffer from the effects of devastating conflicts, loss of life, and increasing poverty and hunger."

The meeting, which is a highlight of Japan's presidency this month, was chaired by Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa.

In addition to Secretary-General António Guterres, ICJ President Joan Donohue and Oxford University professor Dabo Akande briefed during the discussion, which aims to reaffirm the meaning and role of the rule of law among nations and the shared understanding that rules agreed upon by all member states must To be observed by all, according to a United Nations statement.
