The body of a journalist was found in northwest Mexico a week after his disappearance
MEXICO, (AFP) - A journalist has been found dead in northwestern Mexico , authorities announced Tuesday, in what is believed to be another murder in one of the deadliest years yet for the country's press.
The body of freelance journalist Juan Arjón Lopez, who ran a news page on Facebook, was found in San Luis Rio Colorado, in the northwestern state of Sonora, near the border with the United States.
The identity of the 62-year-old man was identified from his fingerprints, according to a source in the Sonora Public Prosecutor's Office told AFP, hours after Public Prosecutor Indira Contreras announced to reporters that a body with tattoos matching those of Aragon had been found.
The authorities were informed of his disappearance on August 9th.
The Public Prosecution Office said in a statement that the autopsy concluded that the death was caused by brain trauma resulting from a blow with a sharp object, adding that it did not rule out any hypothesis in the investigations.
According to Reporters Without Borders, Arkhon alternated between working as a journalist and at a local restaurant.
His recent news reports on his Facebook page, What Are You Afraid Of, were about drug seizures and the recovery of several stolen goods.
At least 13 journalists have been killed since the beginning of the year in Mexico, one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalism, according to media advocacy groups.
More than 150 media workers have been killed since 2000 in this country, and in most cases their killers have not been punished.
